• 4 Holy Child Sisters’ 2019 Appreciation Event Sunday, October 20, 2019

This past fall, the Sisters of the Holy Child Jesus hosted their annual Appreciation Event in Rosemont, Pennsylvania. Approximately 120 Holy Child Associates, donors, alumnae/i, and friends celebrated Mass at Holy Child Chapel and then gathered for a reception in the Main Building on New Sharon’s campus. Following the Liturgy, Carroll Juliano, SHCJ, American Province Leader, greeted the guests at brunch and extended the Sisters’ appreciation. “Thank you for joining us today. This event is a small way of showing the Sisters’ gratitude for your prayers and generous support of our annual appeal.” Gifts to the annual appeal directly support the Network of Schools Office and Holy Child sponsored and co-sponsored ministries that focus on education, social justice, and spiritual and healing. The 2020 Appreciation Event will serve as the kickoff for the Society’s year-long celebration of its 175th Anniversary. • 6 Holy Child Sister Makes Her Final Vows On September 15, 2019, Chinero Theresa Iwundo, SHCJ, professed her final vows in the Society of the Holy Child Jesus – American Province. Below, Sister Chinero reflects on her journey to serve God through consecrated life.

My Vocation Journey By Chinero Theresa Iwundo, SHCJ

My life has always been rooted in the abundant faith and God-loving spirit I inherited from my parents, Theophilus and Patricia lwundo. Their unwavering dedication to God inspired me to pursue a religious life of service. My journey with God started on the day I was baptized and was nurtured throughout my early years, including at Church societies in Nigeria. I was eager at a young age to enter religious life, but, at the request of my parents, waited until after I graduated high school. In 1979, inspired by Mother Connelly and the Society’s spirituality and simplicity of life, I applied to the Society of the Society. I made my first vows in the American Province the Holy Child Jesus – African Province. At that time, the in 2015. vocation director instructed me to work before entering I am blessed to live in community with the Holy Child the candidacy program, which I did for four years at the Sisters. In 2001, my desire to serve God brought me to the United States, where I worked in a nursing home and completed both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in nursing at Catholic University in Washington, DC. While living and working in the U.S., I had a chance encounter with Clarita Hanson, SHCJ, who received my first vows in Nigeria. This encounter with Sister Clarita, and later with other SHCJ friends, led me to reenter

THE LIFE OF CORNELIA CONNELLY By Judith “Judy” Talvacchia is now available in English and Spanish! To receive a copy, please send an e-mail to [email protected].

“ Thank you so much for the book on Cornelia Connelly. I first read about Cornelia during my school days at Saint Leonard’s. Many times my children heard her quotes, especially ‘be yourself but make that self just what our Lord wants it to be.’ My husband and I both read the book and then discussed it. Now I will pass it on to others and trust that Cornelia will also inspire them.“ – Nannette “ The book is beyond informative. Every page captivated me. Kudos to Judith A. Talvacchia! I shall keep my copy on the coffee table for the rest of my eighty-four years! The twelve of which have made me ever grateful for the education the Holy Child Sisters imparted to me.” - Katharine

• 33 News from Cornelia Connelly School of the Holy Child in Anaheim, California

“…the Sisters rejoice in knowing that the young women who attended Connelly School carry with them the confidence, love of learning, and faith-based values that were instilled during their time there.”

Dear Friends, For almost six decades, graduates of Cornelia Connelly School of the Holy Child in Anaheim, Calif., have been inspired by the spirit of Cornelia Connelly to “meet the wants of the age” and distinguish themselves as compassionate leaders and global citizens. It is therefore with deep regret that I inform you that the Board of Trustees of Cornelia Connelly School of the Holy Child has voted to close the school. The board cited diminished enrollment and financial difficulties for the closing. However, the Sisters will continue their financial support and take the necessary steps to ensure the school remains open until June 30, 2020, the end of the academic year. The Sisters of the Holy Child Jesus recognize that the school’s closing will be a loss for the entire community, especially the students, both past and present. Conversely, the Sisters rejoice in knowing that the young women who attended Connelly School carry with them the confidence, love of learning, and faith-based values that were instilled during their time there. Since 1961, a dedicated community of administrators, educators, and volunteers have guided Connelly students and helped them to develop into accomplished young women. The Sisters are deeply grateful for the support and leadership of these individuals, including the current board of trustees, faculty, and staff, especially Board Chair Priscila Forbes and Head of School Jacqueline Quinones Sienkowski. The Holy Child Sisters continue to pray through Cornelia’s intercession for the Connelly School community, including for the loss felt by the students and their families, faculty, staff, trustees, Holy Child Network of Schools and the Sisters themselves. With God’s help and grace, we pray for compassion and acceptance during this challenging time. On behalf of all the Sisters, thank you for your help in advancing the Society’s mission “to rejoice in God’s presence and to help people believe that God lives and acts in them and our world.” Peace and blessings to you today and always,

Carroll Juliano, SHCJ American Province Leader
