PRESIDENTS REPORT

The season is moving really quickly and already we see that finals are just around the corner. We ask players to keep focused and attend training sessions in order to best prepare for the weeks ahead.

Last week the U/17 boys were lucky enough to have former Olympian, Craig Mottram take them for training. Craig runs a high performance training program and has significant experience with AFL clubs including the and Gold Coast. His insights were invaluable and certainly showed our boys they have a lot of work to do! Our Football Academy aims to provide our players with the best possible opportunities both on and off the field and this training session proved to be in invaluable experience for the boys.

Our netball club is growing again and next season we will be fielding 7 teams in total. This has grown from 1 team 4 seasons ago. A huge thanks to Margie Mutimer who has been instrumental in growing the program. Congratulations to Tess Mutimer who this week was selected in the representative Chisholm side as a bottom age player. Tess is also a member of our U/18 girls team. She is certainly a talented player.

Could we please remind parents to assist with duties when rostered on. Our team managers do a brilliant job but need your help to ensure matches can run. Please help us to help your children by ensuring match day duties are done as requested.

See you all at the Dean and Carruthers night this Saturday - apologies to anyone within earshot of me that night!!!! Great tunes to be sung and I have a loud voice!!!!!!

Have a great week everyone - GO RAMS!! Andy Worner President EBJFC

EBFC BEST PLAYERS ON THE DAY WHOLE TEAM COACHES COMMENTS The Rams under 8’s this week had a round 10 clash against the Wantirna South Devils. Training on Friday was upbeat and one of our best sessions this season. Despite the cold and windy conditions on Sunday morning the boys took this positive attitude into the warm up and eventually the start of the game. After last week’s slow start this was most pleasing to see. We all quickly realised in the first few minutes of the game that Wantirna South had some big bodied hard at it players that quickly imposed themselves in the midfield. Mark’s instructions at quarter-time and half-time was for the boys to lift their intensity and pressure around the contest. All players took this advice on board and the same opponents that dominated early were unable to have an impact beyond quarter time. The boys threw themselves at the ball with reckless abandon both in the contest and particularly into smothering opponents kicks. A special mention this week must go to Jack Warren-Smith. Jack sustained a really bad finger injury on Friday night at training and unfortunately as a result will be unable to play for up to 6 weeks. Despite this Jack was heavily involved in Sundays game. He ran laps to warm up, kept score, encouraged his teammates and of course sang the team song at the end of the game. Well done Jack, Great team spirit!

COACHES COMMENTS Playing at home against a very determined East Ringwood, who got away to a 2 goal 3 lead at quarter time. With more ball movement and plenty of energy around the contest we were able to come away with a Great Fighting Win , The spirit and desperation shown by all players in the last half was very encouraging to see looking forward to this weeks game against Vermont.

COACHES COMMENTS A disappointing game, but 7 scoring shots to 10, and a couple of those points were / should / could have been goals an been the difference. The pressure and want for the ball by the opposition in the past two weeks was a great example to our kids of what is needed in this tough sport. We didn’t bring it and as a result we have dropped two games in two weeks. The better players on the day tried hard and gave their all. We rely heavily on these players each week, and these same players continue to give their all each week. We set a goal of playing finals this year and, this will not happen with passengers. We need all players hungry, all players doing the small things and we need all players putting in 100%. If you are not able to get the ball it is a must that you put pressure on the opposition or look after your team mates.

The question is “Do we now give up on our goal and throw in the towel?, or do we dig deep, train hard and play like we need to?”

What a sensational performance from our team this week. In what has been a very tough season our kids came out after not playing for 3 weeks and put in clearly the best effort of the season against Montrose Red. The focus this week was again a continuation of a theme of the past few games where we have seen gradual improvement; apply fierce pressure on the opposition at every contest, be first to the ball and run to support and provide options. Our team has been getting better in this area every week and subsequently so have the results.

We started the game kicking with a strong breeze and took full advantage of it. Our midfield completely dominated the game and continuously drove the ball forward to a quick and elusive forward line. At the other end of the ground our backline was as tight as a drum and gave nothing away to the opposi- tion. Superb team work allowed Devan and Jack to win a lot of possessions and kick great goals and we took a 21 point lead into ¼ time.

Our domination continued in the 2nd quarter. Although we were kicking into the wind we kept up the pressure on Montrose and continually drove the ball forward. Our midfield led by Aaron’s great ruck work was well on top and our strong backline led by Ben, TJ, Brayden and Luke was almost unpassable. Our forward line continued to cause problems for Montrose; Josh’s scintillating pace and Mia’s determined efforts created great space for us to work in. William created an imposing marking target for us and snagged 2 goals. Oliver took a sensational one handed mark and then dished off a handball to create a great running goal in what was brilliant unselfish team play. We kicked another 3 goals for the quarter to take a 33 point lead into half time.

During the half time break the kids were asked to continue with the great work and press home the advantage. To their credit there was no drop off in pressure in the 3rd quarter. The backline was well on top with Xavier getting a lot of possessions and repelling many attacks and Colt’s smart play on the goal line saved us time and again. Xander got a heap of the ball on his wing and on the other wing Matthew’s pace was too much for Montrose as he kept driving the ball into our forward line. Nick continued his great form and kicked a fantastic running goal. Rhys found a lot of space in the forward line taking numerous marks and bombing a great torpedo through the goals from long range. At ¾ time the game was in our keeping with a 46 point lead.

The last quarter played out and whilst we still had the majority of play we weren’t able to kick a goal. However, two of our most inexperienced players in Alan and Jacob were having their best games and their hard work and smart possession helped us lock the ball in our forward line for most of the quarter. Well done boys! Montrose was able to sneak a late goal but we ran out winners by a comfortable 41 points. A rousing and very loud rendition of the club song was a great way to end the game.

All in all it was a brilliant team effort to get our first win of the year. The coaches have seen improvement every week and we were confident that this was the week we could get it done. The kids were determined to put up a great showing and a dominant 4 quarter performance was the result. It has been a very tough year thus far but the kids have keep their heads up and shown great resilience in the face of it. Sunday’s win was just reward for them.

Congratulations kids the coaches, parents and club are extremely proud of you.

Congratulations to Allan on his 50th for the Rams. It has been fantastic to see Allan grow and develop as a footballer to become a highly valuable member of the team who attacks the ball hard and shows plenty of courage and desperation on the field. Allan has worked hard on his skills and it is really obvious when you see the improvement in his kicking and marking. It was very exciting to see him kick his first goal this year and play great consistent football foe the team.

COACH’S COMMENTS

Pat makes a huge impact when playing for the Rams with his strong leads, marking and goal scoring. He plays a vital role between the ruck and forward line to provide great physical pres- ence and effort for the whole game. He was justifiably recognised for his strong performances with his selection in the U14 Interleague team this year and is a part of the leadership group in the Rams team. Congratulations on some fantastic achievements and good luck for many more great games to come.

COACH’S COMMENTS

Will is a very exciting player to watch as he has great speed and skill which gives him the abil- ity break away from packs and create opportunities to kick goals. He had a great year in 2016 and achieved selection in the EFL U14 Interleague team for 2017. Will continues to improve every game and is versatile and very effective in the midfield and forward line. He trains hard and has the respect of the team who voted for him to be a member of the leadership group. Well done on 100 games.

COACHES COMMENTS The team had a great week at training after missing the past 2 games due to a long weekend and a bye. We had a very narrow victory against Heathmont in our previous match and we knew they had set themselves to be very competitive in this game.

We prepared ourselves to work hard for each other at every contest, to run hard when attacking and to push back to defend when required. When the game started the boys were a little fumbly which may have been the result of not playing together for more than 2 weeks. However, they picked up the pace to start running and scoring to achieve a lead at half time but unfortunately we were scoring more behinds than goals.

Our inaccuracy hurt us late in the game as Heathmont started leading us to the ball, taking marks and making us chase them. De- spite many great efforts around the field we were unable to work as effectively as we had planned and the boys were overrun in the last quarter. It was only in the last quarter that the game got away from us and there is still plenty of good football to come from this team.

The game has given us a few areas to work on, including improving our skills under pressure and competitive marking skills. We look forward to another opportunity to show our improved skills and we have no doubt the boys will bounce back hard.

I’d like to congratulate a fantastic group of boys who celebrated milestones on the same day, including 100 games for Pat Marks, Charlie Storey, Will Roland, Harry Garlick and Harry Howlett and we also celebrated 50 games for Allan Campbell.

COACHES COMMENTS.: A great result from the girls last weekend with 27 scoring shots to 4. Unfortunately inaccurate kicking cost us a greater winning margin but we are certainly content with the 4 points and 10 goal win. It is great to see some of the things we have been practising at training are now part of what we are doing in matches. Emma Worner joins the first goal with first kick club - well done Emma!!!

We do need girls to ensure they play each match and commit to the games. It is be- coming increasingly difficult to field a team with so many girls unavailable. Please make sure you make yourself available each week.
