    A New Method of Classification for Tai Textiles Patricia Cheesman Textiles, as part of Southeast Asian traditional clothing and material culture, feature as ethnic identification markers in anthropological studies. Textile scholars struggle with the extremely complex variety of textiles of the Tai peoples and presume that each Tai ethnic group has its own unique dress and textile style. This method of classification assumes what Leach calls “an academic fiction … that in a normal ethnographic situation one ordinarily finds distinct tribes distributed about the map in an orderly fashion with clear-cut boundaries between them” (Leach 1964: 290). Instead, we find different ethnic Tai groups living in the same region wearing the same clothing and the same ethnic group in different regions wearing different clothing. For example: the textiles of the Tai Phuan peoples in Vientiane are different to those of the Tai Phuan in Xiang Khoang or Nam Nguem or Sukhothai. At the same time, the Lao and Tai Lue living in the same region in northern Vietnam weave and wear the same textiles. Some may try to explain the phenomena by calling it “stylistic influence”, but the reality is much more profound. The complete repertoire of a people’s style of dress can be exchanged for another and the common element is geography, not ethnicity. The subject of this paper is to bring to light forty years of in-depth research on Tai textiles and clothing in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Laos), Thailand and Vietnam to demonstrate that clothing and the historical transformation of practices of social production of textiles are best classified not by ethnicity, but by geographical provenance.

    Easy Ballet Wrap Skirt Tutorial You will need • More or less 1 yard of 45-60 inches fabric depending on size and length • Matching thread • Chalk pencil or fabric marker • Measuring tape and a ruler • Optional: A curved ruler. If you don’t have any you can free hand the curve of use something curvy • Rotary cutter and mat (optional) • Basic sewing notion supplies Choose your fabric Choose an appropriate fabric for a ballet wrap skirt. For best result, you will want to use a drape-y, lightweight fabric. For this tutorial, I used a mesh type fabric from the lingerie section. It has only mechanical stretch and doesn’t fray but you could easily choose a stretchy drape-y fabric, as long as you use a stable fabric for the ties. You could also choose a fabric that fray but keep in mind that you will need to hem the skirt. I will let you know in the tutorial when it’s time to hem if you need to! Rayon and viscose poplin, voile, silk, or polyester chiffon, light weight tulle or even nylon chiffon are great choices too! How to measure Unlike most circle skirts where you measure the waist and use that measurement to calculate your circle radius, you will need to wrap the measuring tape around your model’s waist and measure a few inches past her waist circumference. For example, in the photo above, I measured 24 inches while my daughter’s waist measure 19.5”. The excess is the amount of overlap that you want on the skirt.

To comprehend how the meanings of a word are various, conducting componential analysis is necessary to do. A word can share similar features to their synonymous words. To reach the previous goal, componential analysis enables us to find out how words are used in their contexts and what features those words are made up. “Shoes” is a word which has many synonyms as this kind of outfit has developed in terms of its shape, which is obviously seen. From the observation done in this research, there are 26 kinds of shoes with 36 distinctive features. The types of shoes found are boots, brogues, cleats, clogs, espadrilles, flip-flops, galoshes, heels, kamiks, loafers, Mary Janes, moccasins, mules, oxfords, pumps, rollerblades, sandals, skates, slides, sling-backs, slippers, sneakers, swim fins, valenki, waders and wedge.
