This document provides a report for information to the participants of sixteenth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice on steps taken to develop a ―World Flora online‖, its relevance for the implementation of the Convention and for the achievement of the other targets of the GSPC. 3. In this project, semi-automated data processing workflows were developed to test the efficiency of computerizing information contained in herbarium plant specimen labels. Our test sample consisted of mexican and Central American plant specimens held in the University of michigan Herbarium (mICH). The initial data acquisition process consisted of two parts: (1) the capture of digital images of specimen labels and of full-specimen herbarium sheets, and (2) creation of a minimal field database, or “pre-catalog”, of records that contain only information necessary to uniquely identify specimens. For entering “pre-catalog” data, two methods were tested: key-stroking the information (a) from the specimen labels directly, or (b) from digital images of specimen labels. In a second step, locality and latitude/longitude data fields were filled in if the values were present on the labels or images. -

The New York Botanical Garden is using the Flora Neotropica monograph series as a model for digitization. We describe our efforts at digitizing Flora Neotropica monographs and why digitization of hardcopy descriptions must be a priority for the WFO project. The Developmental and Genetic Bases of Apetaly in Bocconia Frutescens

EvoDevo (2016) 7:16 DOI 10.1186/s13227-016-0054-6 EvoDevo RESEARCH Open Access The developmental and genetic bases of apetaly in Bocconia frutescens (Chelidonieae: Papaveraceae) Cristina Arango‑Ocampo1, Favio González2, Juan Fernando Alzate3 and Natalia Pabón‑Mora1* Abstract Background: Bocconia and Macleaya are the only genera of the poppy family (Papaveraceae) lacking petals; how‑ ever, the developmental and genetic processes underlying such evolutionary shift have not yet been studied. Results: We studied floral development in two species of petal-less poppies Bocconia frutescens and Macleaya cordata as well as in the closely related petal-bearing Stylophorum diphyllum. We generated a floral transcriptome of B. frutescens to identify MADS-box ABCE floral organ identity genes expressed during early floral development. We performed phylogenetic analyses of these genes across Ranunculales as well as RT-PCR and qRT-PCR to assess loci- specific expression patterns. We found that petal-to-stamen homeosis in petal-less poppies occurs through distinct developmental pathways. Transcriptomic analyses of B. frutescens floral buds showed that homologs of all MADS-box genes are expressed except for the APETALA3-3 ortholog. Species-specific duplications of other ABCE genes inB. frute- scens have resulted in functional copies with expanded expression patterns than those predicted by the model. Conclusions: Petal loss in B. frutescens is likely associated with the lack of expression of AP3-3 and an expanded expression of AGAMOUS. The genetic basis of petal identity is conserved in Ranunculaceae and Papaveraceae although they have different number of AP3 paralogs and exhibit dissimilar floral groundplans. -
Staminal Evolution in the Genus Salvia (Lamiaceae): Molecular Phylogenetic Evidence for Multiple Origins of the Staminal Lever
Staminal Evolution In The Genus Salvia (Lamiaceae): Molecular Phylogenetic Evidence For Multiple Origins Of The Staminal Lever Jay B. Walker & Kenneth J. Sytsma (Dept. of Botany, University of Wisconsin, Madison) Annals of Botany (in press) Abstract • Background and Aims - The genus Salvia has traditionally included any member of the tribe Mentheae (Lamiaceae) with only two stamens and with each stamen expressing an elongate connective. The recent demonstration of the non-monophyly of the genus presents interesting implications for staminal evolution in the tribe Mentheae. In the context of a molecular phylogeny, we characterize the staminal morphology of the various lineages of Salvia and related genera and present an evolutionary interpretation of staminal variation within the tribe Mentheae. • Methods. Two molecular analyses are presented in order to investigate phylogenetic relationships in the tribe Mentheae and the genus Salvia. The first presents a tribal survey of the Mentheae and the second concentrates on Salvia and related genera. Schematic sketches are presented for the staminal morphology of each major lineage of Salvia and related genera. • Key Results. These analyses suggest an independent origin of the staminal elongate connective on at least three different occasions within the tribe Mentheae, each time with a distinct morphology. Each independent origin of the lever mechanism shows a similar progression of staminal change from slight elongation of the connective tissue separating two fertile thecae to abortion of the posterior thecae and fusion of adjacent posterior thecae. We characterize a monophyletic lineage within the Mentheae consisting of the genera Lepechinia, Melissa, Salvia, Dorystaechas, Meriandra, Zhumeria, Perovskia, and Rosmarinus. • Conclusions. -

It is designed for dealing with all kinds of data that are commonly used in systematic botany and floristic work. CROFlora comprises several main modules: (1) taxonomy, (2) herbarium, (3) literature, (4) choro- logy and (5) related data, such as ecology and multimedia. CROFlora was built over a re lational database. The database relies on the normalised data model, which is presented in the paper. Amongst other features, the client application provides the user with extended query by example (QBE) capabilities and with user-customised reports. The reports in clude taxon sheets, taxa checklists, herbarium labels, bibliography labels and other com plex reports. The database can be connected to a geographical information system (GIS), which empowers easy production of distribution maps and other spatial analysis. The Web interface enables Internet searches. Collins, CO 80523 User’s Guide The Uncompahgre Basin Biological Assessment conducted by the Colorado Natural Heritage Program consists of two essentially distinct projects that are highly integrated with respect to methodology and fieldwork. This report reflects the separate nature of the projects by being organized in a two-volume set. Volume I presents all potential conservation sites that have been identified in the Uncompahgre Basin that support rare and imperiled plants, animals, and significant plant communities, including wetland and riparian areas. Volume II focuses exclusively on wetland and riparian areas. Volume II also presents “locally significant areas.” These are sites that are among the most important wetlands in the Uncompahgre Basin, but they are not unique from a national or statewide perspective, and therefore these sites did not receive a Biodiversity Rank. Additionally, Volume II presents an assessment of the wetland functions performed by each site that was surveyed. These functional assessments are intended to provide the user with a more complete picture of the value wetlands and riparian areas provide to Uncompahgre Basin residents. Both projects utilized the same Natural Heritage Methodology that is used throughout North America, and both searched for and assessed the plants, animals, and plant communities on the Colorado Natural Heritage Program’s List of rare and imperiled elements of biodiversity. -
