Hawks's dazzling Technicolor musical about two little girls from Little Rock on a steam ship bound for France is simply irresistible. It just doesn't get any better than Jane Russell singing "Ain't There Anyone Here for Love" to the men's Olympic team... unless it is Marilyn Monroe singing "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" to a staircase lined with tuxedoed suitors. Kings of Bollywood (Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan) "Bollywood"(Bombay's Hollywood) refers to the Hindi-language film industry based in Mumbai, India. Known for their standardized, melodramatic plots, elaborate song and dance sequences, and very long running times, Bollywood films support a 1.5 billion dollar industry, one of the most successful in the world. And their biggest stars are unquestionably Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan: if Khan is currently Bollywood's

28 brightest star (his DDLJ is the longest running film in the history of Indian cinema), then Bachchan is its most enduring (he was recently voted "actor of the millenium"). But both can rightfully be crowned "kings of Bollywood." This project is supported by the Dane County Cultural Affairs Commission with additional funds from the Overture Foundation and Pleasant T. Rowland Foundation. Brazilian Film of the 50s (Vera Cruz Film Studios + Atlântida Studios) The 1950s is remembered as a period of optimism in Brazil, marked by robust economic growth and a surging ethos of “developmental nationalism.” As part of this new focus on modernization, self reliance, and cultural pride, the Brazilian film industry sought to establish a studio system on Hollywood's model. Its most successful ventures were Vera Cruz Film Studios in São Paulo and Atlântida Studios in Rio de Janeiro. While Vera Cruz aimed high, creating a cosmopolitan, glossy cinema with production values every bit as fine as the Hollywood dream factories it emulated, Atlântida unabashedly went low, targeting the popular audience with entertaining confections full of local flavor. The two strategies epitomized the conundrum of nationalism – but as it turned out, both currents were soon to be eclipsed by the emergence of the "serious and challenging" Cinema Novo. Join us in this unique opportunity to cast aside auterism and didactism, and rediscover Brazil's fascinating popular cinema. Support for this series has been provided by the Latin America, Caribbean and Iberian Studies Program (LACIS), the Consulate General of Brazil in Chicago and the Dane County Cultural Affairs Commission. Special thanks to Severino Albuquerque, Consul João Almino, the Cinemateca Brasileira (in particular Vivan Malusá, Leandro Pardí, and Carlos Roberto de Souza), Karen Crossley, Wilfred Khouri (Cinematográfica Vera Cruz Ltda), Rebecca Laird, Ben Singer, Sarah Ripp, and Alberto Vargas.
