This incapacity benefit (IB) claimant profile for Renfrewshire gives detailed information on IB claimants by sex, age, reason for claiming IB and length of time on IB. It also contains IB claimant rates for the 38 intermediate zones in Renfrewshire (in 2008, Paisley Ferguslie had the highest IB rate at 23.1% and Houston South the lowest rate at 2.8%). 2. In 2008 there were 10,800 IB claimants in Renfrewshire. The IB rate, on flow rate and off flow rate were determined for Renfrewshire from 2000 to 2008. The percent of the working age population claiming IB has decreased from 12.3% to 10.2% from 2000 to 2008. The rate of on flow has decreased from 3.5% to 2.6% and the off flow rate has increased from 25.0% to 28.5%. 3. The proportion of ‘payment’ IB claimants is larger in Renfrewshire compared to Scotland for both males and females. The proportion of male and female ‘credits only’ IB claimants (those with a poor work history) have increased from 2000 to 2008. There are more female ‘credits only’ claimants than males in Renfrewshire. 4. The proportion of each age group who are claimants rises with age, peaking in the 60-64 age group. -

My Mum has just passed away after a long and courageous struggle with cancer. Thanks for all your kindness and support expressed at this time in so many ways. I trust that you had a good break and feel refreshed and looking forward to what the new session of all our organisations and groups have in store for us. It was good to see that Orders of Service, newsletters and magazines have been brought back from holiday. These will be displayed at the back of the Church once we resume worship in it. I am hoping that somebody out there who visited a church when on holiday would like to share their experience with us so as the ‘Churches Visited’ series can continue. As I’ve said before, this is your magazine and only what comes in can go out! Kilbarchan Relief Society Church
RLHF Journal Vol.5 (1993) 2. The Relief Society Church at Kilbarchan Bill Curran Patronage for the established churches of England and Scotland was reinstated by parliament in 1712. But the Presbyterian church had, in 1689, replaced the Episcopalian church as the established state church of Scotland, and to Presbyterians, the appointment of ministers by congregations was an essential point of religion. It was therefore inevitable that differences of opinion would arise between those who held the patronage and the congregations. The patronage of Kilbarchan Parish Church had been purchased by James Milliken, who died in 1776. When, ten years later, the Kilbarchan minister died, James Milliken's trustees selected the successor, the first time since 1605 that a lay patron had exercised his right in Kilbarchan. The choice was endorsed by most of the heritors (landowners) in the parish, by the elders of the church and many others. The opposition, led by William Barr of Cartside, John Galbraith in Thirdpart, John Cochrane in Linwood, James Lyle in Torr and William Lang in Bridge of Weir had the support of 260 heads of families and inhabitants in Kilbarchan (1). These parishioners decided to form their own church and on the 5th May 1786 “a numerous and respectable meeting in the Town Hall of the inhabitants ………agreed………that it is absolutely necessary that there be a church or Meeting House built with all convenient speed………and that it be of the Relief Denomination" (2). On the last Sunday in May a Mr Bell was invited to come to Kilbarchan and he preached, in the open air on Steeple Knoll, to a congregation of a thousand (3). -

Bridge of Weir — The Railway Brian Turner Introduction: It is quite apparent that the coming of the railway not only significantly enhanced the importance of Bridge of Weir, but also had a profound effect on the topography of the core of the village, as we shall see when we examine the construction work involved in creating it. Furthermore, in the present day and age, when railways over the whole of mainland Europe and the UK are undergoing a renaissance, being increasingly seen as the answer to excessive use of car transport and juggernaut long-distance haulage, it is noteworthy that the initiative for the first railway from Bridge of Weir came from within the community. This happened, of course, in the so-called ‘age of railway mania’, when railways were springing up all over the place connecting adjacent communities and ones farther apart. Historical: The earliest proposed scheme for a railway dates from 1845. The ambitious scheme was aimed at linking Johnstone, Houston, Bridge of Weir, and Port Glasgow; but it foundered through problems with finance and was abandoned. Not until 1861 did a group of local businessmen, landed gentry, and men of letters get together and successfully promulgate the idea of a railway to connect Bridge of Weir with the ‘outside world’. At that time the gateway to the outside world was seen as Johnstone, from where trains could be taken to Glasgow (eastwards) and Carlyle. Even London could be reached (westwards via Dalry and Kilmarnock). So it was that the ‘Bridge of Weir Railway Act’ of 1862 was passed, with an arrangement for the G&SWR to work the line.
