LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Tappan Zee High School Coach Dan Dinan upon the occasion of his retirement

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to those notable athletic coaches who have distinguished them- selves and their schools through outstanding commitment and are dedi- cated to developing character and sportsmanship in our young people; and WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long- standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Tappan Zee High School Golf Coach Dan Dinan upon the occasion of his retirement; and WHEREAS, Dan Dinan is stepping down after 31 seasons; he leaves a legacy as the longest-tenured educator and coach at Tappan Zee; he is the lone remaining member of the school's original 1960-1961 staff, a span that included time as a math teacher, assistant principal, as well as the and golf coach; and WHEREAS, Dan Dinan plans to fill his days playing two days a week at Blue Hill Golf Course, where he serves on the advisory committee, and with the Orangetown Park and Recreation committee; he is still a substi- tute teacher in the district and works at Rockland Country Club; and WHEREAS, Golf has always been an obsession of Dan Dinan's, between playing, coaching, rangering and working for the USGA for more than 20 years in tournament-course set-up; and WHEREAS, Dan Dinan was a basketball standout as a youth, earning Hall of Fame honors in his hometown in 1992; he played four seasons at East Stroudsburg University before enlisting in the Navy, where he was an executive officer for ATF 157 aboard the U.S.S. Luisino; and WHEREAS, When Dan Dinan moved to Orangeburg, , in 1958, he took a job teaching math in the district and was the boys' basketball coach; he was the varsity coach for six seasons in the 1960s, deploying a stern and military style; and WHEREAS, Dan Dinan carried on a golfing dynasty at Tappan Zee when he took over in 1979, highlighted by a 64-match unbeaten streak spread over three seasons in the early 1980s; although he refuses to take credit for the program's continued success, he's been selected coach of the year eight times; and WHEREAS, Dan Dinan has clearly had an enduring impact on the youth at Tappan Zee High School, as well as on the community-at-large, and accordingly merits recognition and applause for his impressive dedi- cation to others; and WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ- uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten- tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to honor Tappan Zee High School Golf Coach Dan Dinan upon the occasion of his retirement; and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran- smitted to Dan Dinan.
