People Abbot Oliver – leading monk (abbot) at Dryburgh Abbey, (1262- 1273); the canons are monks/priests at this monastery which is part of the Premonstratensian group of the Catholic Church Agmus “The Black” Montgomerie – Baron of Eaglesham in the lowlands of Scotland, father to Alasdair Montgomerie Aileana Montgomerie – daughter of Alasdair and Deirdre; sister to Domhnall and Grace Alan MacRuaidhri – joint laird with his brother of northern Uist in 1260s; first husband to Annella Alasdair Montgomerie/Sir. Aleck Stirrat – son of Agmus Montgomerie; later, husband to Deirdre MacCoinneach; later, Laird of Glen Shiel; a nobleman on the run traveling under the guise of Aleck Stirrat, carrying secret information to help the Cause (1296)

Largs – small village on southwestern shore (near Firth of Clyde) of Scotland – loch abutting Dornie and Eilean Donan Castle Loch nam Madadh – port town on Uist Highlands – northern region of Scotland Marches, The – border regions between Scotland and England, each controlled by wardens; includes areas of Cumbria and Northumberland (England) and Dumfries and Galloway (Scotland); a volatile and dynamic region Nord Land, The – modern day Norway Port nan Long – village on northern Uist Red Cuillin – the reddish-hued mountain range on the isle of Skye Sligachan – port town on northeastern shore of the isle of Skye Stones of Fhinn – grouping of standing stones with mystical powers on Uist Uist – western isle of Scotland; home to mystical Ancients with magical abilities Varteig – village in the Nord Land (Norway) Warkworth Castle – castle on northeastern coast of England; residence of Henry de Percy

Things Berserker –Norse warriors who wore wolf furs, famous for their fierce fighting Bylgia – goddess of water The Cause – the Scottish fight for independence and the pursuit to put a rightful Scottish heir on the thrown in the wake of King John’s imprisonment/death; the beginnings of the Wars of Independence Cèilidh – Gaelic word for a party or celebration Eir – goddess of healing and mercy Jörd – goddess of earth Lochlanach/Lochlanoch – derogatory slang for a person from the isles descending from the Norse/Nord Land; wrongly used to also describe “Ancient-born” isles folk
