PFC Week Eight in Review By Tom Hallick, PFC Media Coordinator

Edmonton Wildcats 51 @ Edmonton Huskies 25 – October 1 @ Clarke Park

The 2 Edmonton clubs faced each other for the second and last time in 2011. The Wildcats headed into the weekend still in the chase for a postseason berth, but needing loads of help. The Huskies are just playing out the string, but aiming to end a losing streak that has reached 30 contests.

The Huskies would open the scoring early thanks to a Jonathan Heidebrecht 38-yard field goal. The Wildcats would score the first two majors of the evening as Shiane Runcie ran the rock in from 18 yards out; and then took a Jonathan Olson pass 29 yards to put his club up by a 14-3 margin at the end of one.

The Cats upped their lead to 21-3 as Olson connected with Tylor Henry on a 73-yard pass and run play just 88 ticks into the second quarter. The Huskies would go two-and-out, but Heidebrecht would find the mark on a 48-yard field goal to make it 21-6. However the Cats would get another pair of majors to close out the first 30 minutes as Runcie scored his third six-pointer of the contest on a 49-yard run and Andrew Johnson scored on a 7-yard strike from Olson to give the Cats a 35-6 lead at halftime.

The first half was a truly forgettable one for the Huskies, as they were held to only 78 yards of net offense while Trevor Erdmann, starting in place of the injured Ben Gorniak was 0 for 9 passing in the half.

Erdmann would snap out of his funk on the opening drive of the third quarter as he would engineer a 5-play, 74-yard drive that would be capped off by Erdmann calling his own number and scampering 19 yards to make it 35-13 after the convert. Johnson would snuff out any faint hopes of a Huskie rally as he latched onto a 23-yard strike from Olson to restore the 29- point lead. After a Heidebrecht field goal, Johnson would get his third major of the night on a 23-yard grab to make it 49- 16 at 3-quarter time. Both teams would exchange safeties and then Huskies running back Devin Kondro capped off a 68-yard drive with a 13- yard dash to make the final 51-25.

Wildcats pivot Jonathan Olson would complete 15 of 20 for 334 yards and 5 touchdowns. Andrew Johnson would reel in 10 balls for 182 yards. Erdmann would go 6 of 24 on the night for 96 yards.

Saskatoon Hilltops 48 @ Winnipeg Rifles 28 – October 2 @

The Hilltops entered Sunday’s game in Winnipeg with a chance to run their record to 7-0 and claim a 4th straight regular season title. The Rifles were looking to break a 2-game losing streak and stay in the hunt for a home playoff game. The Rifles got off to a great start as Alex Vitt capped off the opening drive with an 11-yard touchdown grab a little over 4 minutes in to put the home side on the board first.

Saskatoon would even the contest a mere 57 seconds later as John Trumpy reeled in a 51-yard touchdown of his own to knot the score at 7. For Trumpy, it was his first of 3 scores on the day. After a Zack Schmidt punt single, the Rifles regained the lead in the last minute as Devin Cox took the overland route from a yard out to give the Rifles a 14-8 lead after one quarter.

Hilltops pivot Chase Bradshaw put his club back on top in the second stanza as he evaded a pair of Rifle defenders on a 3rd down gamble and ran 3 yards to paydirt to make it 15-14. The Toppers would add to their lead as Graig Newman reeled in a 12-yard touchdown pass to make it a 22-14 game. Newman, who has made his mark in the conference at safety, filled in the breach left by Jace Muggli, who sustained a first quarter injury and didn’t return.

Kurt Goodrich would rally the Rifles in the last 2 minutes as he made a spectacular 33-yard grab for a six-pointer and after the Brad Mikoluff convert it was a 1-point game. But the Hilltops would venture 92 yards on their last opening half possession as Trumpy scored on a 22-yard reception to give the Hilltops a 29-21 edge at halftime. After a Zach Schmidt field goal put the champions up by 11, Alex Vitt picked up his second major of the day as he reeled in a 25-yard pass from Marsch to make it 32-28 heading into the final quarter

The Hilltops would score 16 unanswered points in the final frame. Trumpy would get his 3rd score of the day as Bradshaw found him on the fly and went 80 yards to make it an 11-point game again at 39-28. Trumpy had 5 catches for 180 yards on the afternoon. Running back Tom Shockey scored from a yard away to up the lead to 18. Mikoluff would concede a safety to round out the scoring.

Ryan Marsch would complete 22 of 34 passes for 361 yards and 3 more touchdowns, upping his season total to 27. Derek Dean led the Winnipeg pass catchers with 7 for 148 yards. Alex Vitt had 5 for 99 yards, while Kurt Goodrich came up with 5 for 64.

The two teams would combine for over a thousand yards of offense, with the Hilltops amassing 577 yards to Winnipeg’s 425.

The Rifles drop into 4th with a 3-4 record as Regina moved to 4-3 with a 32-19 home win against Calgary. The Hilltops take their fourth straight regular season title.

Winnipeg wraps up the regular season next Sunday as the Rifles head to Calgary to play the 5-2 Colts. Saskatoon closes out their season with a Griffiths Stadium date with the winless Edmonton Huskies.

Calgary Colts 19 @ Regina Thunder 32 – October 2 @

After a defensively dominated opening quarter that saw the visitors lead 3-2, the home side would record a second safety go move into a 4-3 lead only 22 seconds into the second frame. Then quarterback Wyatt Catley, returning to the lineup after sustaining a concussion against Winnipeg would find the Colt end zone to make it a 10-3 game. Colt receiver Brendan Kearl would pull the visitors to within a point with a touchdown grab. Andrew Fabian would promptly tie the game with a kickoff single. Jon Probe would put the Thunder in front to stay with a 7-yard touchdown grab with 3-and-a-half minutes remaining in the half. Regina would pick up their third safety to boost their lead to 8 at the break.

Thunder kicker Ben Koot would add to the lead with a 37-yard field goal. Mike Scheinbein would take a 7-yard pass from Catley to up the lead to 29-11. To round out the quarter, the Thunder would pick up their 4th safety of the day to give Regina a 20-point cushion heading to the fourth frame. The 4th safety tied a PFC single-game best originally set by the Saskatoon Hilltops on September 17, 1983. That feat would be equalled by the Edmonton Wildcats in an October 3, 2009 game.

Ben Koot would be wide on a 26-yard field goal try to make it a 32-11 game. But Calgary, who had a terrible game on the offensive side of the ledger as they amassed only 99 yards of net offense would get into the Regina end zone on the game’s final play as Mac Sarro would score on a 34-yard strike from Jeremy Long.

The Thunder play the Wildcats to close out the regular season, while the Colts have a second shot at nailing down a home playoff game when they host Winnipeg.

PFC Players of the Week www.VidSwap.com Players of the Week – Week Eight

John Trumpy – Receiver – Saskatoon Hilltops The 3rd-year slotback had his best game of his season in Sunday’s 48-28 win in Winnipeg The Saskatoon product who has battled the injury bug this season, came up with 5 catches for 180 yards and scored 3 touchdowns on receptions of 51, 12 & 80 yards respectively as the Hilltops claimed their 4th straight regular season title. He is currently 5th in the PFC with 15 catches for 458 yards and has scored 5 times.

Troy Campbell – Linebacker – Winnipeg Rifles The 3rd-year linebacker had a season-best 8 tackles & added 2 assisted stops for 18 defensive points in the Rifles 48-28 loss to Saskatoon on Sunday afternoon. The 5’9, 200-pound 20-year-old is a product of the Sisler Spartans high school program.

Jonathan Heidebrecht – Kicker – Edmonton Huskies The rookie kicker would be a perfect 3 for 3 in the field goal department in his club’s loss to the Edmonton Wildcats as he was good from 38, 47 & 37 yards respectively. Heidebrecht has made 9 of his 15 attempts in 2011 and sits 6th in conference scoring with 39 points.

PFC Week Nine Preview By Tom Hallick, PFC Media Coordinator

The season’s closing week will not have a whole lot of suspense to it, as the 4 clubs who’ll make the playoffs sewed up their spots last week.

Edmonton Huskies (0-7) @ Saskatoon Hilltops (7-0) – October 9 – Noon @ Griffiths Stadium

The Huskies will wrap up another frustrating campaign in Saskatoon, where to be honest, the Bridge City has more resembled a house of horrors the last number of seasons. The Huskies 2010 visit wasn’t a pleasant experience as the Hilltops routed the Huskies 75-13.

Quarterback Ben Gorniak has been sidelined the last 2 weeks by a concussion and as of this writing; his status for Sunday’s game is unknown. Kicker/Punter Jonathan Heidebrecht earned Special Teams Player of the Week thanks to connecting on 3 long 3-pointers last Saturday against the Wildcats. The Hilltops offense was on a roll last Sunday in Winnipeg as Chase Bradshaw went from a career-worst performance the week before to one of his best as he completed 21 of 28 passes for 362 yards and 4 scores. Slotback John Trumpy picked up Offensive Player of the Week thanks to his 5 catch, 180-yard, 3 score effort.

Winnipeg Rifles (3-4) @ (5-2) - October 9 – 1:00 pm @ McMahon Stadium

The Rifles look to pull out of the three-game dive they’re currently in and finish the season at the .500 mark for the first time since the 2005 season, when they were 7-1 and appeared in the PFC Championship Game.

The Winnipeg offense under Ryan Marsch shows no signs of slowing down whatsoever. Marsch threw for 3 more touchdowns last Sunday, giving him 27 on the year. Winnipeg receivers still hold the top 3 spots in the receiving race, but it’s Alex Vitt on top now, with Derek Dean & Matt Lariviere close behind. But as has been the case throughout the season, the defense is giving up alarming amounts of yardage and points. And with the playoffs just around the corner, it’s a problem that needs to be rectified in a hurry.

The Colts have a chance to nail down a home playoff date and at the same time, get their offense untracked just in time for the playoffs. Coach Keith Kendal & crew would likely want to put last Sunday’s 32-19 defeat in Regina behind them as the Thunder defense held them to 99 yards of offense as well as forcing them to concede 4 safeties. That feat has only been turned twice in 28 years. Calgary won in Winnipeg 2 weeks ago by a 49-33 count

Regina Thunder (4-3) @ Edmonton Wildcats – October 9 – 1:00 pm @ Clarke Park

The last game of the Turkey Day Weekend Triple-Dip sees the Thunder, who are on a 3-game-roll, have a chance to nail down a home playoff date against a Wildcats club who will miss the post-season party for the second straight season.

Wyatt Catley returned to the lineup last week after missing the win over the Huskies with a concussion and impressed as he threw for 265 yards and 3 majors. Clay Cooke had 5 catches for 147 yards and moved up to 4th in receiving with 526 yards on 37 grabs.

The Thunder defense looks to keep up the momentum they built courtesy of a phenomenal effort against the Colts in which they held Calgary to only 7 first downs and 99 yards of total offense.

The Wildcats would like to end their season on a good note with a performance similar to last week’s 51-25 win over the Huskies which saw the Cats rack up over 500 yards of offense. Quarterback Jordan Olson & receiver Andrew Johnson had monster contests; Olson went 15 of 20 for 334 yards and passed for 5 majors, while Johnson had 10 catches for 182 yards and was on the receiving end of 3 Olson touchdown strikes.

Tailback Shiane Runcie carried the mail 14 times for 106 yards and a pair of 6-pointers as well as reeling in a 27-yard pass for a third. Taylor Souster has a hold of 3rd place in the conference rushing race with 567 yards.

The Thunder took the first meeting of the season 44-10 on August 21. www.ofcfootball.com

Twin Cities Predators 19 @ 26 By Tracy Morency – Twin Cities Predators Media Coordinator

The Twin Cities Predators gave up a nail-biter in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s match against the Ottawa Sooners in the nation’s capital, falling to the Sooners 26-19 after leading throughout the first half.

The Predators got on the board early on the first of nine passes from quarterback Cory Prince to Timm Van Schyndel for a touchdown with 6:28 remaining in the first quarter. Charles Smith’s extra point was good, as was a field goal by Smith with 2:46 left to go in the quarter to put the Preds ahead 10-0.

Early in the second quarter, the Sooners’ defence turned the momentum with a fumble recovery for a touchdown by Trent Croney , followed by a successful extra-point attempt by Andrea Frederico, but the Predators answered with a touchdown by Kyle Paul and headed to the dressing room ahead 17-7 at the half. A quick Sooners field goal by Frederico to start the third quarter was followed by a touchdown to tie the game at 17 all going into the fourth.

The Sooners gave up a safety just 1:15 into the fourth, allowing the Preds to pull ahead 19-17, but the lead was soon swapped thanks to a Sooners’ field goal and final touchdown. The Sooners’ missed extra point attempt gave way to a huge last-play threat from the Preds which failed to produce the required major.

The Predators return home to Knight-Newbrough Field at University Stadium in Waterloo on October 8 as they host the Burlington Braves. Admission is only $5 with a donation to the Food Bank of Waterloo Region in conjunction with the annual Onkel Hans Food Drive.

London Beefeaters 5 @ Hamilton Hurricanes 42 By Nick Pelletier – Hamilton Hurricanes Media Coordinator

It was a cold and windy night for Junior football at as the hometown Hurricanes played host to the visiting London Beefeaters. As the two teams took to the field Friday night, the skies opened up and the rain began to fall, adding to the already trying conditions that the Beefeaters and Hurricanes had to face.

It was expected that the crowd would be witness to a running game for the majority of the night and that is what they got.

Both teams took few chances through the air thus eliminating opportunities for mistakes due to a Quarterback’s poor grip on a wet ball.

The first quarter was played between the 40’s for both teams as they looked to get a feel for one another and figure out the best way to attack. The Beefeaters were able to open the scoring in the second quarter with a 35-yard field goal with 12:49 remaining on the clock. Hamilton was able to answer right back by driving down the field and finishing it off with a 3-yard rushing touchdown by Ryan Kotar with only 3:17 left in the half.

Hamilton was able to take a lead into the locker room, albeit, a slim lead.

London was able to generate some confusion up front with different defensive looks and tight coverage on the receivers that resulted in Quarterback sacks, interceptions, and turnovers on downs. The Beefeaters kicking game proved to be too much for the Canes as it pinned the Hurricane returners deep in their own end zone and allowed the Beefeaters to pick up two singles by not allowing the ball to be brought out past the goal line. Unfortunately, this was the end of London’s scoring for the day.

Coach Hayes and the Offense turned it up a notch by hitting on huge plays, such as, Matt Francis connecting with Matt Coates for 75 yards which set up a 2 yard rush by Ryan Kotar putting Hamilton in front 14-5 in the third quarter.

The Hamilton Defense would not be outdone by their Offensive brethren. The D-Line was making it very hard for the Beefeaters to get anything going with the running game by stuffing the inside run and locking down the outside contain. Anthony “Dingo” Dinguanna was a force to be reckoned with and was able to shut down many plays by plugging up the holes and feasting on the London Quarterbacks. The Hamilton Defense was able to stall the Beefeaters on every drive and force them to punt, which gave the Hurricanes Offense more opportunities to put together scoring drives of their own.

Matt Francis went right back to work in the fourth quarter connecting once again with Matt Coates, this time for a 54 yard touchdown pass and catch. The Canes didn’t let off the gas for the rest of the game. Kotar added his third rushing TD of the game and Francis completed another touchdown pass to Malcolm Paul to put the Canes up 35-5 in the fourth quarter. As the clock expired, Hamilton capped off another impressive drive with a 2-yard rushing touchdown by Troy Croonen, who was the workhorse of the Hurricanes running game throughout the night. Kicker Chris Bartolomeo connected on all six of his convert attempts.

The final score saw Hamilton defeat the London Beefeaters 42-5 and improve their record to 6-0.

Hamilton is on the road in week seven as they travel to Chinguacousy Park to take on the Brampton Bears. Game time is 8pm.
