PUBLICATION STUDY ON FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO UNDERUTILIZATION OF GLASGOW COMA SCARE AMONG NURSES

ABSTRACT A study carried out at Mbala and Chilonga General Hospitals and Hospital of Northern and Muchinga Provinces. The study was aimed at identifying factors contributing to underutilization of Glasgow coma scare among nurses. A semi structured interview schedule was used to collect data from 139 respondents who were based at three different hospital using random sampling. Data collected was sorted for completeness and consistence and later entered in Numeric form on spreadsheet. Closed ended questions were edited, coded and finally entered on spreadsheet. Data was analyzed using SpSS version 20.0 with aid of a scientific calculator to come up with frequency tables, pie charts and cross tabulation which were used to determine special relationship between variables. Findings of study indicated that majority 98% of respondents had learnt about GCS. And of the respondents who had learnt about the GCS 97.1% were knowledgeable about the parameters of the GCS. However, despite having learnt and having knowledge of parameters of GCS only 42.2% were consistently using the GCS. Findings further showed that 98.5% of respondents appreciated the benefits of using the GCS in the management of patients with neurological damage. Nevertheless, factors Such as lack of manpower contributed to low utilizations of GCS and although 98.5% of respondents appreciated the benefits of using GCS, only 62.6% of respondents had positive attitude towards recording on the GCS during the care of the patients. This among other things is related to poor work culture. On the other hand, resources had no major impact on the utilization of GCS as majority 69% of respondents indicated its availability. The study revealed that knowledge gap, lack of human resource, poor work culture are some of the contributing factors towards the low utilization of GCS
