Students may participate in a variety of musical groups – from small chamber ensembles to larger symphonic ensembles. UST Band op- portunities include the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Chamber Winds and a full comple- ment of woodwind, brass and percussion chamber ensembles. While members of the UST Bands study and perform standard and contemporary band music as well as transcriptions of other musical genres, the program is dedicated to bringing new literature to the band repertoire. Each year, the Symphonic Wind Ensemble actively commissions and premieres new music by significant national and internationally renowned composers. Since 1991, the UST Symphonic Wind En- semble has commissioned and premiered over 80 new works for band. -

Professor Carole Terry, working with her facuIty colleagues and students has planned an exciting program of recitals, lectures, and lively discussions that promise to illuminate the life and uniquely important music of Max Reger. I wish to thank all of those who are performing and presenting as well those who are attending and participating in other ways in our two-day Symposium. Richard Karpen Professor and Director School of Music, University ofWashington This year marks the lOOth anniversary of the death of Max Reger, a remarkable south German composer of works for organ and piano, as well as symphonic, chamber, and choral music. On November J ph we were pleased to present a group of stellar Seattle organists in a concert of well known organ works by Reger. On November 12, our Symposium includes a group of renowned scholars from the University of Washington and around the world. Dr. Christopher Anderson, Associate Professor of Sacred Music at Southern Methodist University, will present two lectures as a part of the Symposium: The first will be on modem performance practice of Reger's organ works, which will be followed later in the day with lecture highlighting selected chamber works. Dr. George Bozarth will present a lecture on some of Reger's early lieder. -
Awards to Recognize Individuals Who Have Made Major Contributions to Instrumental Mu- Sic Education
A W A RDS Each year, The Midwest Clinic presents awards to recognize individuals who have made major contributions to instrumental mu- sic education. The Medal of Honor was introduced in 1962 as a way to honor conductors, educators, composers, and others whose unique service to music education and continuing influence on the development and improvement of bands and orchestras deserve special recognition. Over its fifty-one year history, the Medal of Honor has been presented to ninety-four individuals. The Music Industry Award honors persons for outstanding support of music education through their work in the music industry. This award was introduced in 1991 and has been presented twenty-seven times. In 1992, the International Award was introduced to honor individu- als who contribute to music education from around the globe, reflecting the growth of the Midwest Clinic from an event of national stature to one of international notoriety. The Midwest Clinic is pleased to honor the 2013 recipients of the Medal of Honor, the Music Industry Award and the International Award. MUSIC INDUSTRY AWARD Lamond has dedicated himself to the cause education. Easter 2021 ANOFOB Program
Welcome to the first ever Australian National Online Festival of Bands. The Band Association of NSW along with our event partners, Besson Buffet Group, Brassbanned.com, OneMusic Australia, Yamaha Music Australia and with the sup- port of CreateNSW are pleased to be hosting this inaugural event. Born out of extraordinary circumstances, I am truly humbled by the response from our Banding community across Australia to this re-styled National festival. With the cancellation of the traditional In-Venue Nationals, which were to be held in Newcastle, the BANSW Management Committee were acutely aware of the im- portance of maintaining a Banding presence over the Easter weekend. Tradition combined with the need to adapt, meant “outside the box” thinking. This resulted in significant simplification of the rules and the creation of a National Online event which would be inclusive and accessible for all Recognising the inability of many bands to have had complete rehearsals while oth- ers had few limits on rehearsals, we created a flexible Festival style event. With few registration and membership requirements bands could participate in whichever events and musical items they were able to present. A reduced minimum member number allow bands with reduced membership to still have a reason to rehearse, and attract players back to band. To this end, with 74 bands from all states and territories, including, the Arafura Wind Ensemble from the Northern Territory, appearing for their first ever National event, and the St Louis Brass Band from the USA, I believe we have absolutely achieved what we set out to. Being online has presented challenges for both Bands and organisers. -

Kjos Music coMpANy • sAN DieGo, cAliFoRNiA 2 THE COMPOSER Ralph Hultgren (b.1953) was born in Box Hill, Victoria, Australia, and now resides in Newmarket, Queensland with his wife Julie and two of his five children. Mr. Hultgren began his professional music career as a trumpet player in 1970. He has performed with the Central Band of the Royal Australian Air Force, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, the Australian Brass Choir, and has worked as a freelance musician for the theatre, opera, cabaret, and recording studios. From 1979–1990, Mr. Hultgren was composer/arranger in residence for the Queensland Department of Education’s Instrumental Music Program. During this time he produced 185 works for that department. His works have been performed widely within Australia as well as internationally, including the U.S.A., Canada, Britain, France, Switzerland, Mexico, Singapore, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Norway, and New Zealand. Mr. Hultgren has been nominated for the prestigious “Sammy” and “Penguin Awards” for his television soundtracks, and has twice won the coveted “Yamaha Composer of the Year Award” for his symphonic band works. In 1998 he became the recipient of the “Citation of Excellence,” the Australian Band and Orchestra Directors’ Association’s highest honor. Appointments as a consultant in conducting, composition, and music education have taken place in Singapore, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Taiwan, the U.S.A., and throughout Australia. Mr. Hultgren is currently Head of Pre-Tertiary Studies at the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University, where he also directs the Wind Orchestra program and lectures in conducting and instrumental pedagogy. -

By the 1960s, composers and performers began to drastically augment standard clarinet technique, by experimenting with multiphonics and microtones. Subsequently, clarinetists-teachers William O. Smith, Gerard Errante, Ronald Caravan, and others further pushed the limits of sound through their compositions for clarinet. This study explores the important contributions of clarinetist-teacher-composer Eric Mandat to the clarinet repertoire, and presents readers with a detailed biography of Mandat. Additionally, this research paper provides insights into Eric Mandat's instinctive approach to life and considers how this modus operandi translates into success as a composer, as a clarinetist, and as a teacher. Interviews with Eric Mandat comprise the basis for this document; these are supplemented by his writings, articles about Mandat, reviews of his music, and interviews with select colleagues and students. Activities include the Orca Concert Series, Clarinettissimo Clarinet Festival, Summer Parks Concerts, Harmony for Hope, and Educational events at schools throughout Western Washington. Our Values Everyone deserves access to great live music. Live music makes vibrant communities. Chamber music with wind instruments is an important but neglected art form. Clarinet education and performance are important. The Clarinettissimo Story Clarinettissimo began in 2001 as single free concert, dedicated to encouraging clarinet students in the Seattle area. Since then, it has grown to a weekend-long festival, Clarinettissimo, and the Orca Concert Series throughout the year featuring all instruments. The Orca Concert Series presents the finest in chamber music for Woodwind, Brass, Keyboard, and String instruments in Western Washington. Music from Baroque to World-premiers, and musicians who perform with the orchestras of New York, Los Angeles, Berlin, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Seattle, St. Paul, the Met Opera, the National Symphony, and in recital at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center.
