The Nature Conservancy Council subsequently commissioned the Biological Survey of Common Land in order to assess the implications for conservation agencies. Work on the Survey started in November 1987 and continued until December 1994. It was undertaken by Rural Surveys Research Unit at Aberystwyth University, and following the split of NCC into English Nature, Scottish Natural Heritage and the Countryside Council for Wales in 1991, the three national bodies continued to fund the research. The aim of the survey was to record detailed information about wildlife in each of the common land areas in order to produce informed management schemes. These schemes would be operated by local management associations, consisting of representatives from all interested parties. The survey was split into four areas of work: to produce boundary maps, vegetation maps and, where possible National Vegetation Classifications; to provide brief descriptions of biological interest of Amphibian, Bird, Plant, Invertebrate, Common Land No. 28 Northumberland 1992 each common (mainly botanical but also to include Northumberland 1443 05/11/2009 26/05/1992 25/09/1992 Lower Plant, Mammal 117 Management

Survey Custodianship/ Survey Name Description Geographic coverage No.of Records Last entry date Earliest record Latest record Broad Groups reference management Surveys of commons in Durham undertaken as part of a national programme to report on common lands in England. The following extract is taken from the introduction to the report: This report presents the results of a biological survey of the registered common lands of England. It is based on information gathered over a twelve- year period by the Rural Surveys Research Unit (University of Wales, Aberystwyth). The central objective of the national survey of commons has been to draw together an array of biological data from a variety of sources, including Phase 1 mapping of vegetation and habitat types. Such data are potentially of value not only to those with a specialist concern for the conservation of biodiversity, but also to those with a broader interest in the use and effective management of commons - policy makers, stakeholders and numerous other parties, both public and private. While the databases produced as a result of the survey focus on biological attributes (flora, fauna and habitats), in addition they include reference to the location and extent of commons, the nature of rights of common (if any) and details of ownership. Also recorded is the association of commons with Bird, Plant, Fungus, Invertebrate, Common Lands of Durham - Biological Survey 2000 various networks (e.g. national Durham 1230 15/06/2010 15/06/1996 12/03/1997 Lower Plant, Mammal 118 Management Breeding bird surveys at three SSSI sites - Witton-le- Wear and Backstone Bank/Baal Hill Woods in Durham and Thornley Woods in . A pond at Bran Sands sewage treatment works, Teesport, was surveyed on 4th August 2010 by Martin Hammond as part of a wider study of ponds on Northumbrian Water operational sites. The pond was surveyed using the PSYM methodology, a technique for assessing the ecological quality of standing water habitats developed by the Environment Agency and Pond Conservation. However, whilst PSYM only requires family-level data for aquatic macro-invertebrates, the vast majority of invertebrates were identified to species-level in order to provide a more informative assessment. The report on Eston Pumping Station was prepared by Tees Valley Wildlife Trust and other consultants to assist Northumbrian Water to plan for appropriate site management for biodiversity. It identifies and assesses the interests of the site and uses the site selection criteria developed by the Tees Valley Local Sites Partnership to give an indication of the conservation value of the site in comparison with other non-statutory conservation sites in the sub- region. This report was based on fieldwork Bird, Crustacean, Invertebrate, Plant, Eston Pumping Station Phase 1 & Bran Sands PSYM Reports 2010 undertaken between August 2008 and July 2010. The primary objective of the survey was to assess the condition of the notified invertebrate assemblage "Sphagnum bog" of the Lampert Mosses site. Four mosses were selected for survey by pitfall trapping, suction sampling, sweep netting and pond netting. Findings are given for the four sites combined and for the individual discrete areas surveyed. See PDF Report for more details and notes for any rare or notable invertebrates encountered. Species groups recorded included spider, beetle, hemiptera, hymenoptera, lepidoptera and Odonata; with a total of 271 species identified within these groups. Nineteen species identified were indicative of Sphagnum Bog, which indicates the feature is in favourable condition for this assemblage type. Records from a planning application survey of the Lemington Development Corridor, completed in 2002.

The aim of the assessment was to identify the most ecologically significant areas in the LDC boundary and their importance within the wider ecological unit. .

On the whole the LDC has some regional and many locally important ecological assets. Much of this is already part of public open space, but some has developed on neglected industrial sites. Careful planning can incorporate these features into future development of the area, but a close dialogue with planners is required if this is to be achieved to its full potential.

The survey was run by City Design, and the data was provided to ERIC by Newcastle City Council. In 2011 Newcastle University commissioned a Phase 1 Habitat Survey of 10 sites across its estate. The survey was commissioned as a 'biodiversity audit' of habitats and species present on the estate, to aid maintenance and enhancement projects in the future.

The survey found that the majority of sites were of little botanical interest, with the exception of hedgerows, woodland and S-I grasslands, which have higher conservation value.

Other areas on the estate have the potential to support bat and GCN populations

An NVC survey of fen sites in Northumberland was undertaken between August and October of 2010, to provide information for updating Natural England's inventories of BAP (Biodiversity Action Plan) habitat. The cluster of sites lay in the central part of the Roman Wall Escarpment in the vicinity of Broomlee, Greenlee and Crag Loughs.

The method used was that of Rodwell et al (1991), with species-lists compiled for each stand in addition to the sampling of representative quadrats. Stand boundaries were mapped in the field onto hard-copy aerial imagery; together with field notes and sketches these were used in the compilation of fair-copy electronic maps using Pitney-Bowes MapInfo software (version 10). All quadrats were GPS-referenced. Some additional wet grassland, aquatic and OV (weedy) vegetation communities were sampled in addition to all mire, swamp and wet woodland types, as specified in the Northumberland Fens & Flushes - NVC contract. Some additional wet grassland, aquatic and OV (weedy) vegetation communities were sampled in addition to all mire, swamp and wet woodland types, as specified in the contract.

"Waxcap Grassland" is a term coined to describe semi-natural grassland types supporting assemblages of certain groups of grassland fungi. The key groups consist of waxcaps (Hygrocybe species), fairy clubs (Clavulinaceae), earth-tongues (Geoglossaceae), pink gills (Entoloma species) and fungi belonging to the genera Dermoloma, Porpoloma and Camarophyllopsis. All of these fungi are restricted to growing in agriculturally unimproved grasslands, i.e unfertilised grasslands with low levels of dissolved nitrogen and phosphorus. Such grasslands have become a rare and threatened habitat type throughout Northern Europe since the 1940's and the UK is now known to be globally significant for this habitat type. Increased recognition of their conservation value has led to the recent inclusion of waxcap grasslands within national and local conservation frameworks such as Biodiversity Action Plans (BAPs) and Red Data lists. Nearly all of the UK's 49 waxcap species are included on at least one Red Data fungi list in Northern Europe. Inventory of grassland sites across County Durham, commissioned and run under the Magical Meadows Partnership (part of Durham Wildlife Trust). The surveys were conducted as it was felt that information on grassland condition was out of date, with the last surveys conducted in the early 1990s. The 2006 survey found significant loss of semi-improved grassland habitat across the region, but it also found that brownfield sites retained high botanical diversity.
