A LIVELY THEatRE There’s a revolution afoot in theatre design, believes architectural consultant RICHARD PILBROW, that takes its cue from the three-dimensional spaces of centuries past The 20th century has not been a good time for theatre architecture. In the years from the 1920s to the 1970s, the world became littered with overlarge, often fan-shaped auditoriums that are barren in feeling and lacking in intimacy--places that are seldom conducive to that interplay between actor and audience that lies at the heart of the theatre experience. Why do theatres of the 19th century feel so much more “theatrical”? And why do so many actors and audiences prefer the old to the new? More generally, does theatre architecture really matter? There are some that believe that as soon as the house lights dim, the audience only needs to see and hear what happens on the stage. Perhaps audiences don’t hiss, boo and shout during a performance any more, but most actors and directors know that an audience’s reaction critically affects the performance. The nature of the theatre space, the configuration of the audience and the intimacy engendered by the form of the auditorium can powerfully assist in the formation of that reaction. A theatre auditorium may be a dead space or a lively one. Theatres designed like cinemas or lecture halls can lay a dead hand on the theatre experience. Happily, the past 20 years have seen a revolution in attitude to theatre design. No longer is a theatre only a place for listening or viewing. -

Lambeth is rich with culture and the borough’s creative and digital industries provide 22,000 jobs, generating £1.8bn GVA to the economy. The borough is home to 20 Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisations, including the National Theatre, BFI, Rambert and the Southbank Centre. Organisations that play a key part in ensuring the diversity and accessibility of London’s cultural sector are located throughout our borough, including the Black Cultural Archives, The Old Vic, Young Vic, Extant, Corali, Ovalhouse Theatre and Streatham Space Project. VCS organisations such as Iconic Steps, Creative Sparkworks and Spiral Skills join the afore mentioned organisations, and many more, in partnership led initiatives spearheaded by the council and backed by the GLA. Designed to strengthen the sector and achieve inclusive growth, these initiatives and the very viability of organisations are now under threat. In order to protect the resilience of the sector, Lambeth Council is calling for further mitigating measures from government. For Exhibitors October 12, 2020 Screendollars About Films, the Film Industry No. 138 Newsletter and Cinema Advertising Sparked by this year’s renewed interest in independent distributors and genre films, we celebrate the creativity of American International Pictures, the pioneer of mass-production, low-budget film making. AIP was founded in 1954 as American Releasing Corporation (ARC) by Samuel Arkoff, an entertainment lawyer, and James Nicholson, a former sales manager for Realart Pictures. They soon expanded into production so they could take full control of their product, both creatively and financially. AIP developed a checklist of creative elements to ensure a film’s appeal to their target youth audience, largely overlooked by studios of the day. Their ARKOFF formula, named after the founder, included these elements: Action, Revolution, Killing, Oratory, Fantasy and Fornication. AIP would frequently bundle multiple pictures to play as double features at the nearly 4000 drive-ins (Click to Play) operating in the US in the 50’s and 60’s. One of AIP’s famously prolific and successful directors, was Roger Corman, "The Pope of Pop Cinema", who established a cult following for himself and AIP through his adaptions of Edgar Allen Poe tales as horror films. Famously, AIP’s new project development began by creating the film’s title and movie poster, which was then market-tested to confirm interest before the screenwriter, director and cast were hired. Introduction to Ecovenue Ecovenue Is a Signifi Cant Theatre-Specifi C Environmental Project Being Run by the Theatres Trust
Introduction to Ecovenue Ecovenue is a signifi cant theatre-specifi c environmental project being run by The Theatres Trust. It aims to improve the environmental performance of forty-eight London theatres and raise awareness of how to make theatres greener. Ecovenue is promoting the sustainability of theatres and the reduction of carbon emissions through the provision of free theatre-specifi c, environmental advice. The project started in 2009 and runs until 2012. Forty-eight venues each undergo an Environmental Audit, and receive a Display Energy Certifi cate (DEC) and Advisory Report. They track their energy use through SMEasure. Each venue receives a second DEC a year after their fi rst to measure progress. Ecovenue includes a ‘DEC Pool’ of performing arts venues across the UK that have obtained DECs. The DEC Pool helps us to evaluate the project and share best practice and information, establish meaningful benchmarks, and provide a better understanding of energy use of theatres. Any theatre can join the DEC Pool. The Trust’s Theatres Magazine provides quarterly reports on the participants and the work of the Ecovenue project. The Theatres Trust Ecovenue project receives fi nancial support from the European Regional Development Fund.
