    Issue 20 World Squash Federation June 2008 Instant Update WSF MEETS IOC TO DISCUSS OLYMPIC BID WSF President Jahangir Khan , together with Emeritus President Susie Simcock and Secretary General Christian Leighton , met IOC Sports Director Christophe Dubi during this month's Sport Accord in Athens, to discuss Squash's bid to join the programme for the 2016 Olympic Games . The meeting was called by the IOC Sports Department with the objective of appraising the next steps regarding the 2008/09 review process and providing short-listed IFs the opportunity (individually) to ask questions on the process or other topics. The WSF was asked to name competitions that the Programme Commission should visit as part of the Observation Programme. Invitations will be extended to the 2008 Men's & Women's World Opens in Manchester in October. The presentations from short-listed IFs to the Executive Board will be made on 15-16 June 2009 in Lausanne. JAHANGIR KHAN HONOURED A touching “Spirit of Sport” award ceremony kicked off the AGM of the General Association of International Sports Federations in Athens, at which 83 IFs and international organisations were represented. The award recognises those who, through their unique commitment and humanitarian spirit, have made an exceptional and lasting contribution to the pursuit of sports excellence, sportsmanship and sport participation. For the second year in a row, Squash Magazine has finally put it down on paper. IIt wasn’t scientific. We had no algorithm. Caprice, whimsy and an eagle-eyed glance at the state of squash in America in 2015 provided the basis. We judged it, in order of importance, by in- triguing and then interesting and then finally influential. Like last year, we know you’ll have suggestions of people we missed and people we should have left out and comments on the rankings. Send them to: [email protected]. —THE EDITORS AMANDA SOBHY College was a good move for this Long Island native. She jumped from world No. 21 when she entered Harvard in 2011 to world No. 10 when she exited. The competition might not have been hard enough—she went 64-0, winning 192 games and losing just two—but the four years of college matured and broadened the anthropology major, giving her a stronger foundation to build a professional career. She is still based in Boston, still training with MIT coach and former world No. 1 Thierry Lincou. Already, she’s the best in this hemisphere: at the Pan-Am Games in Toronto, she grabbed three gold medals, the best individual performance since squash joined the Games in 1995.

Last December we presented our case to the IOC’s Programme Commission and this day in May we shall do so to the IOC Executive Board in St Petersburg, Russia, along with the other shortlisted sports for the place on the programme of the 2020 Olympic Games. The presentation group will be led by WSF President Ramachandran and features our two world champions Nicol David and Ramy Ashour, whose passion and charisma are sure to impress the IOC President Jacques Rogge and his fourteen IOC Board colleagues. The bid film will be shown – it features the two players and has already been viewed nearly 110,000 times, along with the video giving a snapshot of the 185 countries that play squash (you can see both at http://www.worldsquash.org/ws/?p=10564) – along with a new film, that is being finished featuring innovation, broadcast and presentation. The spoken presentations will be accompanied by over 70 great slides illustrating the points made. What happens next is not confirmed. Originally it was stated that one sport would be recommended for ratification by the full IOC membership but indications now are that a few sports may be put forward for the final vote. That will be made clear on the evening of 29th May and we must hope that we are there for the final decision in Buenos Aires on 8th September.

Boopathy SQUASH is one of the few sports in the Commonwealth Games which attracts a world class field and the SRA of Malaysia (SRAM) has only targeted one medal in Manchester. The fact that eight of the top 10 players in the men's professional circuit are from Commonwealth nations and the women's circuit has nine top 10 players, explains the uphill task faced by Malaysia's medal prospects Ong Beng Hee and Nicol David. SRAM acting president Datuk Mokhzani Mahathir said that they are relying on Ong and Nicol to win a medal in the mixed doubles. "Squash is probably the one event where the world champions, not to mention the majority of the professionals, are from Commonwealth countries," said Mokhzani at the Jalan Duta courts yesterday. "As such, our main hope is in the mixed doubles through Ong and Nicol as they have won bronze in the World Invitational this year," said Mokhzani. "There is an outside chance of Beng Hee winning a medal in the singles but he will need to cause a few upsets and will need a favourable draw to achieve it." Ong and Nicol clinched the bronze in the World Invitational in London in April beating top seeds Stewart Boswell-Sarah Fitz-Gerald of Australia. A medal is within their grasp if they can maintain their form. Competition rules allow a country to field only four players in the singles and this could help Ong in his medal quest. World No 5 Thierry Lincou of France and Scotsman John White, ranked sixth, will not be competing in Manchester and this pushes eighth-ranked Ong to sixth in the seedings.
