  • “Until That Song Is Born”: an Ethnographic Investigation of Teaching and Learning Among Collaborative Songwriters in Nashville
“UNTIL THAT SONG IS BORN”: AN ETHNOGRAPHIC INVESTIGATION OF TEACHING AND LEARNING AMONG COLLABORATIVE SONGWRITERS IN NASHVILLE By Stuart Chapman Hill A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Music Education—Doctor of Philosophy 2016 ABSTRACT “UNTIL THAT SONG IS BORN”: AN ETHNOGRAPHIC INVESTIGATION OF TEACHING AND LEARNING AMONG COLLABORATIVE SONGWRITERS IN NASHVILLE By Stuart Chapman Hill With the intent of informing the practice of music educators who teach songwriting in K– 12 and college/university classrooms, the purpose of this research is to examine how professional songwriters in Nashville, Tennessee—one of songwriting’s professional “hubs”—teach and learn from one another in the process of engaging in collaborative songwriting. This study viewed songwriting as a form of “situated learning” (Lave & Wenger, 1991) and “situated practice” (Folkestad, 2012) whose investigation requires consideration of the professional culture that surrounds creative activity in a specific context (i.e., Nashville). The following research questions guided this study: (1) How do collaborative songwriters describe the process of being inducted to, and learning within, the practice of professional songwriting in Nashville, (2) What teaching and learning behaviors can be identified in the collaborative songwriting processes of Nashville songwriters, and (3) Who are the important actors in the process of learning to be a collaborative songwriter in Nashville, and what roles do they play (e.g., gatekeeper, mentor, role model)? This study combined elements of case study and ethnography. Data sources included observation of co-writing sessions, interviews with songwriters, and participation in and observation of open mic and writers’ nights.

  • The Vox Continental
Review: The Vox Continental ANDY BURTON · FEB 12, 2018 Reimagining a Sixties Icon The original Vox Continental, rst introduced by British manufacturer Jennings Musical Industries in 1962, is a classic “combo organ”. This sleek, transistor-based portable electric organ is deeply rooted in pop-music history, used by many of the biggest rock bands of the ’60’s and beyond. Two of the most prominent artists of the era to use a Continental as a main feature of their sound were the Doors (for example, on their classic 1967 breakthrough hit “Light My Fire”) and the Animals (“House Of The Rising Sun”). John Lennon famously played one live with the Beatles at the biggest-ever rock show to date, at New York’s Shea Stadium in 1965. The Continental was bright orange-red with reverse-color keys, which made it stand out visually, especially on television (which had recently transitioned from black-and-white to color). The sleek design, as much as the sound, made it the most popular combo organ of its time, rivaled only by the Farsa Compact series. The sound, generated by 12 transistor-based oscillators with octave-divider circuits, was thin and bright - piercing even. And decidedly low-delity and egalitarian. The classier, more lush-sounding and expensive Hammond B-3 / Leslie speaker combination eectively required a road crew to move around, ensuring that only acts with a big touring budget could aord to carry one. By contrast, the Continental and its combo- organ rivals were something any keyboard player in any band, famous or not, could use onstage.

  • NCRC Award Brian Docs
NCRC 2012 Radio Awards Application, Documentary Bio and Program Note Producer: Brian Meagher Bio: It all began when I was six years old and I heard `Popcorn` for the first time. I remember being at the A&W Drive-In, the waitresses arriving at our car on roller skates, and this incredible song providing the soundtrack. Electronic music has provided my soundtrack ever since. Program: Synthumentary (episodes 1-3) Description: Synthumentary is a five-part look at the evolution of the electronic instruments and their place in popular culture, from the earliest electromechanical musical devices to the Moog explosion of the late 60`s and early 70`s. Synthumentary presents a survey of the landmark inventors, instruments, artists and recordings of each era. In each episode, we look at a different scene, discuss the era`s principle actors and play some of their music to illustrate the style of music made at the time. The evolution of electronic music technology is explained to frame each episode. Our aim is to provide the casual listener of electronic music with an appreciation of its possibilities and the more knowledgeable fan with at least a few nuggets of novel information. Among the subjects covered are: The Telharmonium, Theremin, The ”Forbidden Planet” Soundtrack, Raymond Scott, The Ondioline, Jean-Jacques Perrey and Gershon Kingsley, Bob Moog and the Moog music phenomena, Silver Apples, and the Canadian scene: Hugh LeCaine to Bruce Haack to Jean Sauvageau. The intro and outro theme is an original composition written and performed by members of The Unireverse for Synthumentary. The audio submitted contains excerpts from all three episodes.
