JONATHAN HALL OF CARNEGIE MELLON AND SIMON EJDEMYR OF NEW MEXICO LEAD ESPN THE MAGAZINE'S ACADEMIC ALL AMERICA® MEN'S SOCCER TEAM 10th-Ranked Carnegie Mellon Places Five on Academic All-America® First Team

TOWSON, Md. -- Senior defender Jonathan Hall of Carnegie Mellon and Simon Ejdemyr of the University of New Mexico headline the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Men’s Soccer Teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Hall and Ejdemyr have been named as the winners of the Academic All-America® of the Year awards in the College and University Divisions, respectively. Named as the College Division Academic All-America® of the Year for a second consecutive year, Hall is a Business Administration and Finance major with a perfect 4.00 grade point average. Since the inception of the Academic All-America® of the Year award in 2001, he is the first individual to be named as the Academic All- America® of the Year for men’s soccer in the College Division twice. He is also one of five Scholar-Athletes from Carnegie Mellon named to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Men’s Soccer College Division first team. The Tartans, who are ranked tenth in NCAA Division III with a 16-2-1 record, are the first team to place five players on an Academic All-America® soccer team. In addition to Hall, senior defender Austin Good, senior forward Ricky Griffin and senior midfielders Ryan Browne and Keith Haselhoff were selected to the first team. A native of Venetia, Pa., Hall is serving as a team captain for the second year and has anchored a defensive line that has recorded 12 shutouts in 19 games, Hall has started all 75 games of his college career. A first team All- University Athletic Association selection as a senior, he was a second team selection in 2007 and 2008. An All- Regional pick in 2007, he helped Carnegie Mellon win the 2009 UAA championship, earning conference’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament field. Hall also earned All-Mid-Atlantic Region honors in 2007. In addition to his academic and athletic achievements, Hall has served as the co-chair of the Student-Athlete Advisory Board. He has also been a member of the President’s Advisory Council for three years. Hall has already been offered a full-time position at an investment banking firm. Hall and his teammates have led Carnegie Mellon to NCAA Tournament wins over Thomas More and Medaille as the Tartans of Coach Arron Lujen have advanced to the third round. Good, Browne, Haselhoff and Griffin were all named to the 2008 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Men’s Soccer College Division second team. Along with Hall, Good has been a starting defender in all 19 games this season. He has a double major of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A. Led by Hall and Good, the Tartans lead the UAA with a 0.62 Goals Against Average. A native of Lancaster, Pa., Good spent this past summer as an intern in the cell biology and physiology lab at the Pittsburgh Medical Center. The recipient of the Andrew Carnegie and John L. Stone Scholarships, he is also a member of Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society. A Business Administration major with a minor in Finance and a 3.81 G.P.A., Griffin was honored as the UAA Player of the Year for the second straight year. A two-time All-UAA first team selection, he is the Tartans’ leading scorer with 18 goals and nine assists. With 55 points, he has tied the school record for points in a season. Honored as a second team All-America selection by the NSCAA in 2008, Griffin also earned All-Region notice. A native of Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y., Griffin has scored 50 goals with 21 assists in his career. For the last two summers, he has been an intern at Forex Capital Markets in New York City. - more -

A Business Administration major with a 3.90 G.P.A., Browne was named as a first team All-UAA selection for the second straight year. A native of Pittsburgh, he is the Tartans’ second-leading scorer with 10 goals and a team high 10 assists. He led Carnegie Mellon to a pair of NCAA Tournament wins by scoring two goals against Thomas More and the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win over Medaille. Honored as an NSCAA All-American third team selection last year, he has scored 28 goals with 22 assists in his career. He was named honorable mention All-UAA as a freshman and sophomore. The Tartans’ team captain, Haselhoff is a Mechanical Engineering major with a 3.84 G.P.A. A second team All- UAA selection as a senior, he is the Tartans’ fourth-leading scorer with three goals and six assists. A native of White Oak, Pa., he was a member of the inaugural UAA President’s Scholar-Athlete Team. A first team All-UAA selection as a junior, he scored three goals with eight assists. Hasselhoff interned at Steel and Christy Park Industries while serving as a soccer coach for mentally and physically challenged youth. Senior forward Luke Lennox of St. John Fisher and junior forward Christian Therkelsen of Massachusetts Institute of Technology join Hall as the only players to repeat on the first team. Senior defender Jay Keener of Wooster, a third team selection in 2008, moved up to the first team this season. Junior Zach Carr of Stevens Institute of Technology is the goalkeeper on the first team while seniors Brett Chonko of Hampden-Sydney and Tyler Duellman of Edgewood complete the defense. Senior midfielder Peter Shorten of Dension completes the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Men’s Soccer College Division first team. A Biology and Psychology major with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A., Lennox led St. John Fisher with eight goals and seven assists. A three-time All- selection, he led the Cardinals to a 2-0 win over Elmira in the ECAC Upstate New York championship game. A native of Pittsford, N.Y., Lennox was named as the Most Outstanding Player of the ECAC Tournament. Honored as the Empire 8 Player of the Year in 2007, he was named to the NSCAA New York All-Region team. Therkelsen, who has a double major of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science with a 3.80 G.P.A., was the second-leading scorer for MIT with nine goals and nine assists. A native of Nesbru, Norway, Therkelsen was named first team All-NEWMAC for the second year in a row while helping MIT post an 8-9-0 record. He has been involved in developing auto traffic simulation models that are being used by the New York State Department of Transportation and the Beijing Transportation Research Center. A four-year starter on defense for Wooster, Keener is a Chemistry major with a 3.94 G.P.A. Honored as an All- North Coast Athletic Conference selection twice in his career, he was a defensive leader for the Scots. A native of Wadsworth, Ohio, Keener is one of only 10 students on campus inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa National Honor Society as a junior. A Biomedical Engineering major with a 3.91 G.P.A., Carr has led Stevens Institute of Technology to a 17-3-1 record, the Empire 8 championship and a pair of NCAA Division III Tournament victories. A native of Carmel, Ind., Carr posted back-to-back shutout victories over York (N.Y.) and Montclair State to lift the Ducks into the round of 16 of the NCAA Tournament. While playing all 1,917 minutes of the season, he ranks among the national leaders with a 0.33 Goals Against Average. While allowing only seven goals all year, he has recorded 15 shutouts. In two years as the Ducks’ starting goalkeeper, he has a career record of 49-6-8. A two-time Empire 8 All-Conference selection, he has recorded 35 shutouts in his career. An English major with a 3.82 G.P.A., Chonko started all 20 games on defense for Hampden-Sydney. While scoring four goals and two assists, he was a vital part of a stingy defense that led the Old Dominion Athletic Conference in Goals Against Average (0.59) while helping the Tigers set a school record for shutouts (11). A three- time Academic All-ODAC selection, he helped the Tigers post a 16-4 record before their season ended with a loss in the semi-finals of the ODAC Tournament. He is a member of the Sigma Tau Delta (English) and Omicron Delta Kappa (National Leadership) honor societies. A central defender, Duellman is a Biochemistry major with a 3.93 G.P.A. A starter in 19 games for Edgewood, he helped the Eagles to a 12-5-3 record. The South Milwaukee, Wisconsin native led a defense that recorded seven shutouts. A second team All-Northern Athletic Conference selection, he scored three goals and had five assists. - more -

A History major with a minor in Chemistry and a 3.83 G.P.A., Shorten was the top scorer for Denison with seven goals and three assists. The team captain of the Big Red, he led Denison to the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament championship, an NCAA Tournament berth and a final record of 12-5-3. A three-time All-NCAC selection, the Hudson, Ohio native was named first team all-conference as a senior. With three members of the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Men’s Soccer College Division first team earning 4.00 cumulative grade point averages, the overall G.P.A. of the first team is 3.90.

A three-time member of the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Men’s Soccer University Division team, Ejdemyr was named to the first team for the second year in a row. He earned third team notice as a sophomore. A native of Boras, Sweden, Ejdemyr was named to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation All- Conference first team for the fourth year in a row. A starter in 71 of 72 matches in his four-year career, Ejdemyr is a Political Science major with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A. He was selected as a Far West All-Region player twice. In 2006, he was named to the College Soccer News Freshman All-America first team. A solid defender, Ejdemyr has scored 12 goals in his career, including a perfect 8-for-8 on penalty kicks. He scored two game winning goals in each of the last three seasons. As a senior, he led the Lobos to a 12-6-1 record and a second place finish at the MPSF Tournament. New Mexico earned a berth in the NCAA Men’s Soccer College Cup and will host Portland in a first round game on Wednesday, November 19. One of 12 Scholar-Athletes named to the first team, Ejdemyr is one of three repeat selections on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Men’s Soccer University Division first team. Senior midfielder Josh Bienenfeld of Duke and senior forward Zack Schilawski of Wake Forest were also selected to the first team last year. Senior midfielder Adam Gross of Charlotte earned third team notice last year. A Psychology major with a 3.96 G.P.A., Bienenfeld has been a three-year starter for the Blue Devils. As a senior, he led Duke to a 12-6 record and a berth in the NCAA Men’s Soccer College Cup. Making their third straight appearance in the NCAA College Cup, the Blue Devils host Winthrop in a first round game on November 19. A native of Huntingdon Valley, Pa., Bienenfeld has served as the Blue Devils’ team captains as a senior. In 2006, he was named to the Atlantic Coast Conference All-Freshman team. He was also honored as the team’s Most Valuable Player as a freshman. Bienenfeld ranks in the top 1% of his class and has been an Emily K Center Tutor. A native of Cary N.C., Schilawski has been one of the leading scorers for the Demon Deacons throughout his career. A Biology major with a 3.57 G.P.A., he has led third-ranked Wake Forest to a 14-3-2 record and the number three seed in the 2009 NCAA College Cup. A first team All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection, he led the ACC with 11 goals and 26 points while helping Wake Forest win the ACC’s regular season championship. The third- leading scorer in Wake Forest history, Schilawski scored the game-winning goal in the 2007 NCAA championship game against Ohio State. As a junior, he scored 11 goals and five assists. A finalist for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award, Schilawski was the 2008 ACC Scholar-Athlete for men’s soccer. A Business Management major with a 3.66 G.P.A., Gross was the leading scorer for 18th-ranked Charlotte. A native of Austin, Texas, he led the 49ers to an 11-3-5 record and a berth in the NCAA College Cup where they will host UNC Wilmington in the first round. Honored as the Atlantic-10 Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year, he has scored eight goals with six assists. A first team all-conference pick, he has four game-winning goals. The 49ers’ team captain, Gross was named to the A-10 Academic All-Conference team for the second year in a row. Senior Rylan Hawkins of Washington was named as the goalkeeper on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Men’s Soccer University Division first team. Seniors Jacob Lawrence of Bowling Green and Brian Wurst of Drake joined Ejdemyr as defenders on the first team, along with junior Conner Burt of Butler and sophomore Kofi Sarkodie of top-ranked Akron. Senior midfielders Richard Edgar of George Mason and Charlie Reiter of Davidson and senior forward Jason Yeisley of Penn State complete the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Men’s Soccer University Division first team. - more –

A Computer Engineering major with a 3.92 G.P.A., Hawkins has played all 1766 minutes in goal for the Huskies. A native of Shoreline, Washington, Hawkins had a 0.97 Goals Against Average for the Huskies, who had a 5-7-6 record. A four-year starter at Washington, he recorded six shutouts as a senior. A three-time member of the Pacific-10 Conference All-Academic first team, he earned the Provost Academic Excellence Award last year. As a freshman, Hawkins recorded seven shutouts and earned All-Pac-10 honorable mention honors. An Interpersonal Communication major with a 3.93 G.P.A., Lawrence served as the co-captain for Bowling Green as a senior. The Falcons’ second-leading scorer as a defender, he scored five goals and had three assists. A native of Brandon, Mississippi, Lawrence was the team’s Most Valuable Player as a junior. He was named to the Mid-American Conference’s All-Academic team twice. A two-year starter on defense at Drake, Wurst is a Management major with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A. A starter in all 21 games, he helped Drake win its first-ever Missouri Valley Conference Tournament championship on Sunday. With a 13-6-2 record, the Bulldogs will play in the NCAA College Cup, hosting Western Illinois in the first round. A solid defender, the Kansas City, Missouri native has contributed to a defense that has posted seven shutouts this season. He was named to the MVC Championship all-tournament team as a junior. A Marketing major with a minor in Biology and a 3.97 G.P.A., Burt is a three-year starter for Butler, the 23rd- ranked team in NCAA Division I. A starter in all 18 games, he was part of a defense that recorded eight shutouts and posted a 0.59 Goals Against Average. A native of Elkhart, Indiana, Burt was a second team All- selection this season. A three-time selection to the Horizon League All-Academic team, he led Butler to a 14-2-2 record and second place finish in the Horizon League Tournament. The Bulldogs are seeded 12th in the NCAA College Cup and will host either Louisville or Indiana in a second round matchup on Sunday. A four-year starter for George Mason, Edgar is a Psychology major with a 3.97 G.P.A. Honored as a second team All-Colonial Athletic Association selection as a senior, he led the Patriots to a final record of 10-7-2. A native of Mechanicsville, Md., he had two assists. As a junior, Edgar led the Patriots to the CAA championship, earning a spot on the CAA All-Tournament team. A second team All-CAA selection as a junior, he was also honored as the CAA Scholar-Athlete for men’s soccer. A Political Science major with a 3.48 G.P.A., Reiter led Davidson to an 11-7-0 record as a senior. After playing midfield for three years, he was moved to forward this season and responded with a -leading 12 goals and eight assists. A native of Westport, Conn., Reiter was ranked among the NCAA scoring leaders for most of the season and was named as the Southern Conference Player of the Year. A first team All-Southern Conference selection, Reiter has been actively involved in the Davidson Scholars Program. The Offensive Player of the Year, Yeisley is a Management major with a 3.61 G.P.A. at Penn State. As a senior, he has scored eight goals with five assists while leading the Nittany Lions to a 12-7-2 record and a second place finish in the Big Ten Tournament. A three-year captain, he was the winner of the Big Ten Conference Sportsmanship Award this season. The Allentown, Pa. native earned first team All-Big Ten honors for the second time. He was also named to the Big Ten All-Freshman team in 2005 when he led Penn State to the Big Ten championship. The Nittany Lions are seeded seventh in the NCAA College Cup. The 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Men’s Soccer University Division first team has an average G.P.A. of 3.84.

To be eligible for the national team, a student athlete had to have been selected to its District’s first team. Initial nomination criteria at the District level includes being a varsity starter or key reserve, maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, reaching sophomore athletic and academic standing at his current institution and be nominated by their sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, COSIDA has bestowed Academic All America honors on more than 14,000 student athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
