Leabharlann Náisiúnta na hÉireann National Library of Ireland Collection List 19 Augustine Henry and Evelyn Gleeson Papers (MS 13,698) (Accession 2501) Partial calendar with brief description of letters sent by Augustine Henry and Evelyn Gleeson between 1879 and 1928. Letters are arranged according to year and date. 1 Introduction Henry, Augustine (1857–1930), botanical collector and dendrologist, was born on 2 July 1857 in Dundee, the first of six children of Bernard Henry (c.1825–1891) and Mary MacNamee. His father, at one time a gold-prospector in California and Australia, was a native of the townland of Tyanee on the west bank of the River Bann in co. Londonderry. Soon after Austin (as Augustine was called within his family) was born, the family moved to Cookstown, co. Tyrone, where his father was in business as a flax dealer and owned a grocery shop. Henry was educated at Cookstown Academy and in Queen's College, Galway. He studied natural sciences and philosophy, graduating with a first-class bachelor of arts degree and a gold medal in 1877. Henry then studied medicine at Queen's College, Belfast, where he obtained his master of arts degree in 1878. For a year he was in the London Hospital, and during a visit to Belfast in 1879, at the suggestion of one of his professors, he applied for a medical post in the Chinese imperial maritime customs service. Henry completed his medical studies as rapidly as he could, became a licentiate from the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh, passed the Chinese customs service examinations (for which he required a working knowledge of Chinese) and and left for China in the summer of 1881.

The walking and cycling strategy for Castleblayney will help to develop the town with a network of safe and convenient walking and cycling routes that will improve the quality of life for everybody in the community by prioritising walking and cycling for travel to work, education, shopping and day to day business in the town whilst also providing high quality routes for leisure and fitness activities. 1.2 OBJECTIVES Consultation undertaken as part of this strategy has demonstrated the strong sense of community within Castleblayney and the pride in the existing facilities and potential future facilities in the area around Lough Muckno. There was a clear desire for improved walking and cycling provision for leisure and recreation and for access to key destinations such as the local schools and it was evident from the consultation that a multi- agency group consisting of local and countywide bodies should be developed to assist with the implementation of the strategy and to build relationships that will help promote walking and cycling within the town and identify future measures to contain the ongoing promotion of walking and cycling.

The Project title; ‘Terrorism knows NO Borders’ aptly illustrates the broader point that we are seeking to make through our involvement in this work, namely that in the context of Northern Ireland terrorism and criminal violence was not curtailed to Northern Ireland alone but rather that individuals, families and communities experienced its’ impacts across the United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland and beyond these islands. This Memorial Quilt Project does not claim to represent the totality of lives lost across Great Britain and The Republic of Ireland but rather seeks to provide some understanding of the sacrifices paid by communities, families and individuals who have been victimised by ‘Republican’ or ‘Loyalist’ terrorism. SEFF’s ethos means that we are not purely concerned with victims/survivors who live within south Fermanagh or indeed the broader County.

At least two to three days notice is required by the Education and Outreach Officer but you are advised to book as early as possible to avoid disappointment. To borrow material, a list of items required should be telephoned or preferably emailed to the Education and Outreach Officer stating the date you wish to collect loans and when they will be returned. Items can be borrowed as themed groups or as individual pieces. Duration of Loans Objects may be borrowed for a period of time up to a maximum of one month. This time may be reduced subject to demand and waiting lists. Collection & Return of Loans Booked loans can be collected from and returned to the Museum between 9.15am and 4.00pm from Monday to Friday or on Saturday by prior agreement. Loans must be returned no later than 4.30 on the last day of the agreed loan period and must be accepted by a member of staff.
