(r.e.) A quarant’anni dall’acqua granda, Venezia s’interroga sul futuro guardando pensierosa al presente. Non tutta, magari, ma certamente quella parte in cui volentieri ci riconosciamo, propensa a ritenere che i diritti di cittadinanza siano ancora possibili e praticabili, pur nel dilagare di un monopolio turistico vieppiù devastante, la cui cifra è nella rendita di posizione, autentica maledizione cittadina. Fra i diritti di cittadinanza annoveriamo (e il destino ci ha gentilmente dato in sorte) anche il cinema, massacrato in città, negli ultimi decenni del Novecento, dallo spopolamento e da quel processo di espulsione delle attività commerciali e produttive a bassa redditività che ha fatto da corollario all’incalzare dell’offerta variamente riconducibile alla crescita turistica. Di qui, controcorrente, l’avvio di un investimento pubblico finalizzato a restituire spazi e dignità allo spettacolo cinematografico, specie di qualità. All’insegna di uno sviluppo necessariamente senza profitto (ma possibilmente senza neppure perdite) e dunque gestito in prima persona dall’Amministrazione Comunale (ma propiziato da felici intese con l’impresa privata sul piano patrimoniale), hanno così riaperto i battenti in versione multisala il Giorgione (1999) e l’Astra (2002), mentre restano ancora incompiute la piccola Casa del cinema (destinata a slittare nel 2007, con il trasferimento e il potenziamento dei servizi della Videoteca Pasinetti a Palazzo Mocenigo) e la riattivazione del Rossini, oggetto di un defatigante project financing che – se tutto va bene – produrrà i suoi frutti (tre sale) nel 2008. Un risanamento, in definitiva, per metà compiuto e per metà in via di compimento, al termine del quale la Venezia insulare si vedrà dotata di otto schermi cinematografici a programmazione permamente. -

September 3, 2019 Critic's Picks: A September To-Do List for Film Buffs in L.A Alain Delon in 'Purple Moon' (1960) A classic lesbian drama, French noirs starring Alain Delon and Jean Gabin and a series of matinees devoted to Katharine Hepburn are among the plentiful vintage and classic options for SoCal film buffs this month. OLIVIA AT THE LAEMMLE ROYAL | 11523 Santa Monica Blvd. Already underway and screening daily through Sept. 5 at the Laemmle Royal is a new digital restoration of Jacqueline Audry’s trailblazing 1951 feature Olivia, one of the first films, French or otherwise, to deal with female homosexuality. Set in a 19th-century Parisian finishing school for girls, the film depicts the struggle between two head mistresses (Edwige Feuillere and Simone Simon) for the affection of their students, and how one girl’s (Marie-Claire Olivia) romantic urges stir jealousy in the house. Audry, one of the key female filmmakers of post-World War II France, stages this feverish chamber drama (based on a novel by the English writer Dorothy Bussy) with a delicate yet incisive touch, allowing the story’s implicit sensuality to simmer ominously without boiling over into undue hysterics. Lesbian dramas would soon become more explicit, but few have matched Olivia’s unique combination of elegance and eroticism.
