About the project The journey so far

On 15 July 2016, Barratt London took ownership of the Upton Gardens site from Galliard Homes. Barratt London is now delivering a scheme which was approved by the on 10 March 2016.

The legacy of this site is very important to Barratt London and it is our intention to remember both West Ham United and the Thames Ironworks from which the club originated. As such, we are creating a Legacy Route throughout the development, which will include a section that marks the position of the centre circle. The Legacy Route is going to be named Shipbuilding Way, which recognises the history of the Thames Ironworks and its role in the creation of iconic ships. Masterplan of the development It is also our intention to recreate a section of the East Stand colonnade along the eastern area of the site. Additionally, Barratt London is currently working with an artist on proposals for public artwork located within the Legacy Route and throughout the public realm, that references the site’s rich history and can be enjoyed by everyone.

Long term involvement

The memorial area will form a part of the public realm at Upton Gardens once all landscaping works have been completed. Barratt Residential Asset Management will take over responsibility for the maintenance of the public realm at Upton Gardens upon completion of the development. Upton Gardens public realm and legacy route Existing and Proposed Layout Before we create our design proposals, our team of landscape architects study the existing layout and consider the opportunities and constraints presented to us.

Existing conditions

• The existing memorial area comprises two trees and a planting bed with memorabilia placed by the families of those remembered there • The area is enclosed to the South by an existing brick wall 2.5m high • The location of the area is significant, right at the entrance of the main pedestrian route of the development, and therefore requires a careful design approach. We want to create a new public space while Images of the existing memorial garden respecting the memory of the location

Landscape proposal

Our landscape proposals seek to retain and enhance the area around the existing memorial garden, enabling families and fans to have unlimited access to visit the garden and ensuring a well-maintained environment for the future.

• A low planter, required to retain the soil around the existing trees, will become a special element of the design, with integrated seating and a memorial plaque

Root Protection Area - we n The proposals Memorial text options

An important aspect of the new memorial garden will be a memorial plaque, which commemorates loved ones in a meaningful way.

Option 1: Memorial planter

We can incorporate commemorative text or plaques on the planter around the existing memorial tree, creating a Memorial Planter.

The planter, which will retain the soil of the existing tree, can be cased in several different materials:

• Natural stone (granite) with cut out text Aerial view of proposed layout • Pre-cast concrete with cast in text

• Cor-ten steel with cut in steel

As mentioned previously, we are happy to integrate timber seating into the planter. This could also be Option A: bench used as a location for commemorative text. Option B: side of the planter Commemorative text around the tree Option C: top of the planter

Option 2: Memorial paving 1

This option involves the creation of a special paving area around the Memorial Planter, which can then be inlaid with commemorative text.

Natural stone would be the preferred material to achieve this effect. Aerial view of proposed layout

Option 3: Memorial paving 2

This option also proposes a special paving area inlaid with commemorative text, but this time as a band of paving at the entrance to the memorial area, to create a distinction for this part of the open public space. Aerial view of proposed layout

Special paving band inlaid with commemorative text The proposals Further to the style of commemoration and location of the plaque, we are also seeking your views on the memorial text. We have provided a suggestion below though welcome your suggestions too.

Suggested memorial text content

In respect of the tribute that will feature around the tree itself (pictured in strategy 1) we would like to propose the following:

‘This area is dedicated to the memory of all of the West Ham United supporters who are remembered at the Boleyn Ground, the Club’s home from 1904-2016.’

We feel this message should accompany an image, or multiple images, of the club’s crest.

Suggested memorial text styles The proposals Memorial Capsule

We know and appreciate that the memorial garden is an important area for families and West Ham United fans.

We would like to preserve the memories of those remembered in this area in a way which encapsulates the physical items, without exposing them to damage. As such, we are considering a memorial capsule to protect the memorabilia placed here.

As the enhanced memorial garden will be an open public space, we will not be able to protect the memorabilia in its current form. To ensure its longevity and remembrance, the memorabilia in the memorial area needs to be removed. We will do this with the utmost care and have made a list of all the items which have been placed there. Owners will be given an option to either retrieve their items or to have them placed in the memorial capsule. This capsule will then be buried during a private ceremony with those families involved, thus protecting the memories for years to come.

Similarities with the time capsule

You may know that we paid a similar tribute to mark the 25th anniversary of Bobby Moore’s passing in May this year.

The Bobby Moore time capsule – originally placed by his widow Stephanie in October 1993 – was retrieved in June 2017 by contractors reaching the final stages of the demolition process at the redeveloped site.

This year on 10 May, the time capsule was reburied in its final resting place under the centre circle of the former Boleyn Ground.

The capsule contains mementos of Bobby Moore’s life and playing career, donated by the Club, supporters and his wife, Stephanie. Having been carefully extracted last summer, it is now housed in a new outer container, with a small number of new items added to tell the story of the time capsule’s journey and the legacy created since Bobby’s passing.

The time capsule was laid in a private ceremony, led once again by Stephanie.

Mirroring plaques

We thought it would be a suitable tribute to those remembered in the memorial garden, to create a memorial capsule which replicates the Bobby Moore time capsule. The two capsules will form the focal points of the Legacy Route, mirroring one another – one in remembrance of Bobby Moore, the other in memoriam of Bobby Moore Timecapsule burial event those remembered in the gardens. Anticipated project timeline Next steps Family consultation There are several important steps that will occur over June/July sessions 2018 the next few years, ahead of the new memorial garden.

As you know, the memorial area will look quite different when the Mid August Deadline for feedback landscaping is completed, though it’s essence will continue with 2018 the trees remaining as its centre point. To protect it from building work closest to the area, it will need to be enclosed within the Consider feedback and hoarding line, and therefore closed to the public. This will amend proposals. We will August/ write to you to update you happen in summer 2019. September 2018 on our final proposals We will hold a ceremony for people to collect their items prior to this Collection of items time. At this point all items that will be buried in the memorial Spring ceremony prior to closure capsule will be placed in storage. We will need permission to place of memorial garden 2019 items in the capsule. If we do not hear from you regarding the items, we will not place them in the capsule. They will be placed Closure of memorial in storage with West Ham United. We will give a six month notice of Summer* garden when the area will be cordoned off to allow time for items to be 2019 claimed and final visitations arranged. Temporary memorial The landscaping works to this area will begin in 2021. It is at Summer bench to be installed this point that we will arrange a ceremony to bury the memorial 2019 capsule – we will invite all those with items within the capsule to the ceremony. Memorial capsule is buried in a ceremony Autumn with families We appreciate that there will be an extended period of time when 2021 families are unable to visit the area. We will provide a memorial bench on another area of the development as a place of reflection Landscaping work completed and the during this time and we will keep you informed on our progress End of memorial area is reopened to ensure you know when the landscaping will be completed, 2021 to the public and the memorial area reopened.

* Please note that this is subject to change. However, we will give you six months’ notice to ensure you have sufficient time Aerial view of the Upton Gardens development
