The house is.important architecturally as a handsome, dignified stone dwelling of-the-period in a rural, agrarian county. The careful c~aftsmanship of the stone masonry, the soft, buff color of the stone, the occasional well designed ornaments on both the exterior and interior express great restraint of design. The Hays-Heighe House is located on the campus of Harford Junior College on the east side of Thomas Run Road 0.3 miles north of Churchville Road arid five miles east of Bel Air, Maryland. The house is five bays long and two bays deep with no windows m in the west gable except at the attic level. It has an "A" roof m with massive brick chimneys on each gable. On the east is a five bay long two-story stone wing, three bays of which are original to the house. .z Dressed stone is used on the main (south) facade, rough field stone on the sides. The lintels are more refined on this facade -t having five separate blocks, in the center of each of which is :;o a large keystone. The central south door is narrow in contrast c to the size of the facade. It has a single-leaf door with semi n circular transom. Above the second story window and beneath the -t lunette window in the pediment is a stone date plaque with the initials "A & H H, 1808." There is a plain boxed cornice, with a course of small dentils. 0 :z Because of its present use as an administration building for the "" Harford Community College, the interior of the wing and second floor rooms have been altered with removable partitions and "weld-wood paneling". The trim and mantels, entrance door and staircase, are all intact. The floor plan consists of a large stair hall, running south and north with one large room on the west side ~nd ·two smaller rooms on the east side. (see Continuation Sheet) .... The same plan was used on both stor ies with a small room above the main (south) en trance. The long, west, drawing room is temporarily partitioned in half, for use as two college offices. These offices retain the panelled window jambs of the original room. Beneath the entire structure is a full cellar. The attic is unfinished. One of the unusual fe~tures for a house of this size is that the only rbearing" walls are the exterior ones. There are no masonry interior par titions. The interior trim throughout is simple. The interior trim of the south door is heavily molded, the interior of the door is faced with diagonal battens. The half-round fan-light window has tracery wood muntins. The door trim has a wide, molded trim, half-round at the top with a molded, wood, keystone. The door trim of the hall appears original to the period, with six·-panel doors. The dado appears to be a 1930 decorative feature. The wide open str~ng staircase has carved step-ends, a paneled soffit~ walnut, molded hand-rail, turned newel and slender rectangular balusters. The stair_case rises two stories to the attic. The two rooms east of the hall have wood mantels with reeded pilasters of the late federal style, each has one paneled side cupboard with narrow raised panel doors, .the windows have molded trirri . ... ) MHT HA-152 II•·. The Harford Community College preserved the structure by converting it from a dwelling to z administrative offices--an example of alternative use. 0 Built in 1808, according.to the date stone, by Archer Hays, the structure ·served as a farm house throughout the nineteenth J century for the prominent Harford County Hays family. Thomas u A. Hays who owned the property while his daughter lived there, => was one of the founders of the town of Bel Air--the county seat of Harford County. a:::: I- In the mid-twentieth century Mrs. Anne McElderry Heighe operat~ ed a horse farm there. z w w .• ... a MHT HA-152 ·- f9.; MAJOR-1StBLIOGRAPHICAL REFERENCES Recorder: Jean s.
