GOLDEYES COLLECT 19 HITS AGAIN IN WIN OVER LINCOLN: The Winnipeg Goldeyes beat the Lincoln Saltdogs 11-6 at Shaw Park on Wednesday night. Tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the third, Willy Garcia hit a two-run single to put the Goldeyes ahead for the rest of the game. Winnipeg added six more runs in the fourth on a double from Kevin Garcia, three consecutive RBI singles from Reggie Abercrombie, Dominic Ficociello, and Willy Garcia, and a two-out, two-run double from Adrian Marin. Lincoln closed the gap with a three-run homer from Josh Mazzola in the sixth and a run- scoring double play from Forrest Allday in the seventh. Tyler Hill hit a solo in the bottom of the seventh to re-extend the lead to 11-6. Abercrombie singled home a run in the first, and the Goldeyes took a 2-0 lead in the second on an Alex Perez sacrifice fly. Lincoln briefly tied the game in the top of the third on a Christian Ibarra two-run home run. Mitchell Lambson started for the Goldeyes and picked up the win, allowing six runs, five earned, on eight hits in 6.1 innings. Lambson walked none and struck out seven.

ALL-TIME AGAINST THE SALTDOGS: The Winnipeg Goldeyes are 67-47 all-time against the Lincoln Saltdogs, including a 38-18 record at Shaw Park. The Saltdogs were 51-48 in 2018, which marked the third time in three seasons the club finished with a winning record under manager Bobby Brown. The Saltdogs won the American Association Central Division in 2017 with a regular season record of 58-41. Brown was voted American Association Manager of the Year. The Goldeyes then beat the Saltdogs three games to one in the American Association Division Series, clinching on September 10th at Shaw Park in the bottom of the ninth on a bases loaded walk to Casey Turgeon. The Saltdogs have reached the playoffs nine times in their first 18 seasons. The Saltdogs won the 2009 American Association championship, beating both the Wichita Wingnuts (North Division Series) and the Pensacola Pelicans (Championship Series) in a winner-take-all Game Five on the road. The Saltdogs franchise began play in 2001, and their lineage dates back to the Northern League’s Madison Black Wolf. The Saltdogs play at state-of-the-art Haymarket Park in Lincoln, Nebraska, and share the facility with the University of Nebraska (Cornhuskers) baseball team. Haymarket Park was again named the American Association’s Playing Surface of the Year in 2018, and has captured the award in all 18 years of its existence (Northern League 2001-05, American Association 2006-18). Brown took over as manager in 2016, and played for the Goldeyes from 2000-02. Brown hit a combined .290 for the Goldeyes and helped them reach the Northern League Championship Series in 2001 and 2002. Brown managed the Amarillo Sox/Thunderheads from 2013-15, and previously skippered the North American League’s Abilene Prairie Dogs. Former Major League right-hander Dan Reichert is in his second stint as Lincoln’s pitching coach. Reichert was the seventh overall pick in the 1997 amateur draft and pitched for the Saltdogs in 2007. In addition to 2017, the Goldeyes and Saltdogs have met three other times in the postseason. The Goldeyes beat the Saltdogs 3-1 in the 2001 Northern League Central Conference Championship Series and 3- 2 in the 2002 Northern League North Division Championship Series. In 2014, the Saltdogs edged the Goldeyes 3-2 in the American Association Division Series. The Goldeyes were 3-4 against the Saltdogs in 2018.

SERIES MATCHUP: The Winnipeg Goldeyes are 43-31, in fourth place in the American Association North Division, and 4.5 games behind the Fargo- Moorhead RedHawks. The Goldeyes just split a four-game series with the RedHawks at Newman Outdoor Field. The Goldeyes are tied for fifth in the American Association in hitting (.273), fifth in pitching (4.46), and first in fielding (.989). The Lincoln Saltdogs are 32-42, in fourth place in the South Division, and 12.5 games behind the Cleburne Railroaders. The Saltdogs just swept a three-game series from the Kansas City T-Bones at Haymarket Park. The Saltdogs are ninth in the league in batting (.255), tied for ninth in pitching (4.78), and third in defence (.981). This is the second of two head- to-head series this season between Winnipeg and Lincoln. The Saltdogs swept a three-game series from the Goldeyes at Haymarket Park in July.

PROJECTED UPCOMING PITCHING MATCHUPS TONIGHT’S STARTERS: The Goldeyes go with left- 8/9 at MIL-1: TBA vs. TBA hander Joel Bender who is 1-2 with a 2.67 ERA in two 8/9 at MIL-2: TBA vs. TBA starts and 17 relief appearances this season. Bender took 8/10 at MIL: TBA vs. TBA a no-decision in a start last Saturday at Fargo-Moorhead, 8/11 at MIL: TBA vs. TBA allowing one earned run on six hits in 4.0 innings. Bender walked two and struck out two. The RedHawks won the game 8-4. Bender’s first start this season came on July 28th vs. Fargo-Moorhead, which marked Bender’s first start since July 7th, 2017 while pitching for the ’ Rookie Arizona League affiliate.

Bender was 0-1 with a 1.59 ERA in 19 relief appearances last season for the Double-A Southern League’s Pensacola Blue Wahoos (Cincinnati Reds). Bender was drafted by the Reds in the 27th round in 2010 out of Oak Hills High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. Bender reached Triple-A Louisville in 2015 where he allowed just one earned run in 10.1 innings. Bender has reached the Double-A level three times in his career. The Reds assigned Bender to the ’s Scottsdale Scorpions in 2017.

Bender is in his eighth season of , and is 22-18 lifetime with six saves and a 3.94 ERA in 213 appearances, 20 of them as a starting pitcher.

Bender is 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA in one career relief appearance against Lincoln. Bender is 1-1 with a 3.68 ERA in one start and nine relief appearances in his career at Shaw Park.

The Saltdogs go with right-hander Brad Thoutt who is 0-0 with a 4.50 ERA in two starts since re-signing with the Saltdogs on July 25th. Thoutt took a no- decision vs. Kansas City last Friday, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits in 4.1 innings. Thoutt walked five and struck out six. The Saltdogs won the game 6-3.

Thoutt was 3-1 with a 5.87 ERA in six starts and four relief appearances for the Saltdogs as a true rookie in 2018. Thoutt played five seasons of college baseball at Regis University in Denver, Colorado where he was a combined 23-14 for the Rangers with a 4.59 ERA in 52 games, 47 of them starts. Thoutt departed as the program’s all-time leader in strikeouts (283) and ranked second in wins.

Today will be Thoutt’s first career appearance against Winnipeg, as well as his first career appearance at Shaw Park.

GOLDEYES MANAGER: Rick Forney is now in his 14th season as Goldeyes’ manager, and his 23rd overall within the organization. During his first 13 years at the helm, the Goldeyes have posted a .545 overall winning percentage (698-583), 10 winning seasons, nine playoff appearances, and an American Association-record three championships. Forney was voted American Association Manager of the Year in 2011, and managed the American Association during the American Association/Can-Am League All-Star Game in 2017. Forney’s .553 winning percentage in the American Association (2011-18) is the third-highest in league history (there have been 51 total American Association managers through the 2018 season). Forney pitched professionally for 10 years, including four seasons with the Goldeyes. During his playing career, Forney was 89-56 (.614) with a 3.63 ERA, and reached the Triple-A level in 1995.

GOLDEYES ROSTER MOVES: The Winnipeg Goldeyes made several roster moves on Tuesday in anticipation of the return of veterans Wes Darvill and Willy Garcia. The Goldeyes placed outfielder James Harris on the Inactive List, while infielder Carlos Garcia cleared waivers and is now a free agent. Rookie infielder Jordan Hovey was placed on the Disabled List, retroactive to July 15th.

DARVILL, GARCIA STAR IN PAN-AM GAMES: Goldeyes’ all-star infielder Wes Darvill was selected to the Canadian National Team for the 2019 Pan- Am Games in Lima, Peru. Willy Garcia represented the Dominican National Team at the event. The tournament concluded Sunday with Team Canada taking home the Silver Medal following a 6-1 loss to the Puerto Rican National Team. Darvill was 9-for-27 (.333) in six games with eight runs and eight RBI. Darvill hit a grand slam home run against Team Colombia on Thursday. In four contests, Garcia was 3-for-15 with three runs, a grand slam home run, and five RBI.

SWING-AND-A-PIECE: After 74 games, the Winnipeg Goldeyes’ collective swinging strike rate is 8.7 percent. The 2018 Major League average swinging strike rate was 11.6 percent. Second baseman Alex Perez has whiffed just 67 times out of 1,263 pitches seen (5.3%). From June 22nd-28th, Perez saw 103 consecutive pitches without a swing and miss. Shortstop Adrian Marin has swung and missed just 21 times on 371 pitches (5.7%).

MCGOVERN SETS GOLDEYES STRIKEOUT RECORD: Goldeyes’ fourth-year left-handed pitcher Kevin McGovern set the franchise career strikeout record on July 24th vs. Texas. McGovern struck out AirHogs’ second baseman Luo Jinjun in the top of the second inning for his 436th in a Goldeyes’ uniform. Left-hander Chris Salamida (2010-14) held the previous record with 435 strikeouts. On May 26th vs. Kansas City, McGovern struck out 11 batters. His fifth that afternoon was his 381st as a Goldeye, moving him ahead of Andrew “Ace” Walker for second place.

THREE MAJOR RECORDS FOR CAPELLAN: Fourth-year Goldeyes’ relief pitcher Victor Capellan earned his 38th save with the club on June 11th at Gary SouthShore, setting a new franchise career record. Steve Thomas (2001-03) held the previous record with 37 saves. On August 2nd at Fargo- Moorhead, Capellan earned his 23rd save of 2019, setting a new Goldeyes’ single-season record. The previous record of 22 was shared by Capellan (2018) and Oscar Montero (2004). On July 8th vs. St. Paul, Capellan made his 221st career appearance in the American Association, passing right- hander Dustin Cameron for the league’s all-time record. On July 25th vs. Texas, Capellan earned his 20th save of the season, and became just the eighth pitcher in American Association history to post a second season of 20-plus saves. Capellan appeared in all 12 of the Goldeyes’ postseason victories from 2016-17.

PATIENT PEREZ: Goldeyes’ second baseman Alex Perez is third in the American Association in walks (55). Entering this season, Perez had a career average of 78 walks per 162 games played, and a career .356 on-base percentage when leading off an inning.

DARVILL SETTLING IN AT SHORT: Goldeyes’ veteran infielder Wes Darvill has seen extensive playing time at shortstop this season. Darvill has a .989 fielding percentage and has committed just two errors in 42 games at shortstop. Darvill also has a .984 fielding percentage with just one error in 21 games at third base this season. From 2016-17, Darvill fielded more chances (532) than any third baseman in the American Association.

STEADY AT SECOND: Goldeyes’ second baseman Alex Perez leads the American Association with a .997 fielding percentage in 72 games. Perez has also fielded the most chances at the position (345), and did not commit an error in his first 55 games. Perez’s first error came on July 18th vs. Sioux Falls.

ABERCROMBIE SETS GOLDEYES RBI RECORD: With a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the sixth on July 3rd vs. Fargo-Moorhead, centre fielder Reggie Abercrombie moved into first place on the Goldeyes’ career RBI list with his 347th and 348th since joining the club in 2014. Longtime catcher Luis Alen established the previous record in 2015 with 347.

ABERCROMBIE SETS LEAGUE RUNS RECORD: Reggie Abercrombie scored on Tyler Hill’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning on July 24th vs. Texas. It was Abercrombie’s 530th career run in the American Association, setting a new league record. David Espinosa held the previous mark with 529 runs scored. Abercrombie tied Espinosa after hitting a solo home run on July 20th at Kansas City.

ANOTHER RECORD FOR REGGIE: Goldeyes’ centre fielder Reggie Abercrombie set the American Association’s all-time record for games played on May 29th vs. Gary SouthShore. Abercrombie appeared in his 694th game since joining the league in 2010, passing former Goldeye Josh Mazzola.

ABERCROMBIE PASSES PENPRASE: Goldeyes’ centre fielder Reggie Abercrombie stole second base in the first inning on June 20th vs. Chicago. It was Abercrombie’s 170th stolen base during his time in the American Association, which moved him past former Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks’ shortstop Zach Penprase for third all-time. Abercrombie tied Penprase with his 169th American Association steal on June 19th vs. Chicago. Former Goldeye Maikol Gonzalez holds the league’s career record with 230 steals, while Brian Fryer is second at 206.

TENURED REGGIE: On May 16th at Texas, Goldeyes’ centre fielder Reggie Abercrombie became the first player in American Association history to appear in a 10th season. Abercrombie first joined the league in 2010 with the Sioux Falls Pheasants.

PLAYOFF FORMAT: The American Association maintains the two-division format that was re-introduced in 2018. Both divisions feature six teams. The Goldeyes remain in the American Association North along with the Chicago Dogs, Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, Gary SouthShore RailCats, Milwaukee Milkmen, and the St. Paul Saints. The Sioux Falls Canaries move to the South Division, and are joined by the Cleburne Railroaders, Kansas City T- Bones, Lincoln Saltdogs, Sioux City Explorers, and Texas AirHogs.

DAIRY DELIVERY: The American Association welcomes the Milwaukee Milkmen as an expansion team in 2019. The franchise is based out of Franklin, Wisconsin, a suburb located 14 miles southwest of downtown Milwaukee. The Milkmen will play at brand new Routine Field, a $15 Million development with an expected capacity of 4,000. Inclement weather has delayed construction, and the Milkmen expect to formally open Routine Field on June 24th. The club will play its home games in Kokomo, Indiana during the first month of the season. The Milkmen effectively replace the Wichita Wingnuts who were forced to vacate Lawrence-Dumont Stadium in preparation for the arrival of a Triple-A franchise in 2020.

GOLDEYES ENTER 26th SEASON: The Winnipeg Goldeyes enter their 26th season in 2019. The franchise brought professional baseball back to the city in 1994. The Goldeyes were 41-59 in 2018, marking just the fourth time in team history they finished below .500. The Goldeyes have reached the postseason 19 times in their first 25 years, and have won four championships (Northern League 1994, American Association 2012, 2016, 2017).

ALUMNI REPORT: RHP Brandon Kintzler (2007-08) has a 2.33 ERA in 46.1 innings for the Chicago Cubs. Kintzler was an American League All-Star in 2017, saving 28 games for the Minnesota Twins before being traded to the Washington Nationals in July. Kintzler has pitched in the Major Leagues every season since 2010. RHP Dylan Thompson’s contract was purchased by the Boston Red Sox on May 10th, and is 4-8 with a 6.21 ERA in 13 starts and one relief appearance for the High-A Carolina League’s Salem Red Sox. Earlier this season, Thompson earned a promotion to Double-A Portland where he picked up the win in his first career Double-A start. RHP Brandon Marklund signed with the Goldeyes in January as a true rookie before having his contract purchased by the Kansas City Royals one week later. Marklund has a 0.62 ERA in 29.0 innings for the Low-A South Atlantic League’s Lexington Legends. Infielder Kevin Lachance had his contract purchased by the on June 1st. Lachance is currently with the Short Season-A Northwest League’s Hillsboro Hops. Lachance also earned a promotion to the Triple-A Pacific Coast League’s Reno Aces.
