Star Wars From Geonosis to Mandalore By: Clark Bergschneider Jax stood in the doorway of the bridge of the republic cruiser and coughed. “Oh! It’s just you.” the admiral said. “As I informed you earlier, you will be working closely with Jedi Lukas Ja-ho and Lei Sindarri. In fact, here they are now.” As if on cue, the opposite door opened, and in stepped two Jedi. One wore the robes of a Jedi master, but the other one wore mandalorian armor with swirls and patterns so unique it made his eyes hurt. The male, Ja-ho, turned to the admiral. “Why do I have to work with clones?” he asked in a voice of utter disgust, but the one in the armor, Lei, seemed the opposite. Away from her master’s gaze, she rolled her finger around her ear, then threw up her hands as if to say, ‘what can I do about it?’ Under his helmet, he grinned, liking the padawan already. Ja-ho? Not so much. Thunk. Jax woke instantly, grabbing his blaster from under his pillow. He crept silently through the door of the barracks with his blaster raised, muscles taunt and ready to spring. Then Jax nearly fired his blaster. On the other side of the hallway was Lei, lightsaber ignited, the light purple glow glinting off her armor. “I thought I heard a noise, commander,” Jax whispered through the comlink, but she didn’t respond in the way Jax thought she would. “Have you heard we’re shipping out in the morning?” she asked. “Where to?” “I don’t know,” she said. As she turned to leave, Jax asked, “Why does the General hate clones?” “Dunno. I just guess he thinks you’re just living droids.” “And you don’t?” he asked. She was quiet for some time. “You’re a person.” 3 years later 1300 hours Republic Outpost 13th moon of the System Jax and Lei were pouring over the holo-map, but Ja-ho knew they weren’t +talking about the battle. He didn’t need to be Force sensitive to know that. His hand went to his lightsaber that hung over his robes. The time had come. Lei stared at the lightsaber that Ja-ho held in his fist as she drew her own lightsaber. She’d known something was off about him, but not like this, not to the point that he wanted to pull Jax and her apart. He was choking the life out of Jax with one hand and holding his lightsaber with the other. Lei didn’t want to kill him, but she loved Jax. “Why, Master?” Lei asked as she gripped her lightsaber. “Why do you want to kill Jax?” Ja-ho's gaze became unfocused, and he mumbled something she couldn’t hear, then came back to attention. “Because I can’t have you falling in love,” he taunted. “Because I can’t have you dying.” He grabbed Jax even tighter. “And I hate him.” With that, Jax died. Lei’s eyes were as hard as ice, and she activated her comlink. “Threat on Deck twelve,” she breathed. “Arrest immediately. Shoot to stun.” Ja-ho dropped Jax’s lifeless body to the floor. “Drop your lightsaber,” he ordered, but then his eyes widened. Ja-ho spun around only to receive two blaster bolts to his stomach. The clones who had shot Ja-ho now leveled their blasters at Lei. “I told you to...why are you about to shoot me,” she asked nervously. Her response was blaster bolts which she barely managed to block. Lei leapt over their heads and force- pushed them into a wall. Then she ran. Lei sprinted, blaster fire peppering the corridor behind her. She still couldn’t believe Jax was dead. She turned a corner and ran into a group of clones. Whoops. She turned around and made a beeline for the hanger, even more blaster fire being her sole companion. Got to get to fighter. After what seemed like an eternity, Lei stumbled to a stop in the hangar. It was strangely deserted. They all must be hunting me, she reasoned, but that did nothing to help her feelings of apprehension. She quickly spotted her fighter and ran to it, glancing over her shoulder the whole way. Lei quickly climbed in and spotted clones coming into the hangar and firing their blasters at the interceptor. She ignited the thrusters and realized they were closing the doors. Lei pushed the throttle forward and her ship bolted to the exit. Please make it. Her ship scraped the doors. Please make it. Metal screeched. Then she was free. Yes! Lei celebrated. Now, where to? Yavin 4? Why not. She programmed the hyperdrive to Y-6 and lay back in her seat, but almost as suddenly, a hologram appeared. The hooded figure spoke. “Lei Sindelli, join the Empire.” Then it listed all that the Empire stood for, then said, “Lei Sindelli, join the Sith. That night, Lei swore she would fight against the empire that betrayed the Jedi and betrayed the Galaxy.
