Thanks for your paence over the past few months while I've been working out of town, it actually got to point where I lost track of whether I was Arthur or Martha from all my travel (Dunedin to Queenstown to Christchurch to Timaru to Alex to Oamaru and most places in between). It just le my head spinning and like any good Billboard Ad, I know that you have all missed me as well. Yeah….

Unfortunately while I've been away, it appears that that Meth stuff has sneaked into our community. Methamphetamine is the scourge of on a whole and this great wee town did well to hold out for so long, but I am now geng informaon about an increase in the s, violence offences, disorder as well as impaired dangerous driving. Stuff that is not common in our community. This arcle is not meant to scare anyone as we sll live in a very safe community compared to other parts of NZ, but I want it to be safer.

In some other places in NZ at the moment it is easier to get Meth than it is to get tobacco. That scares the heck out of me that our community might follow. The increase of recent reported aacks on Ambulance and Fire staff throughout NZ is a major concern. They do a fantasc job for us and that is why the community and Police must work together to try and combat the problem before it becomes the ruinaon of small town NZ.

Basically that means I need your help, any informaon will be kept in strict confidence. Just let me know by my email or my phone number below. It can even be done through the 0800 555 111 Crimestoppers anonymous phone line. With your help and informaon I hope to shine a spotlight on these offenders, to drive them out of the area and before the courts. I believe they offer very lile to our community and if we don’t stop them, I feel it is only a maer of me unl someone is seriously injured during their impaired driving, disorder or violent episodes.

On other news, There has also been an increase in rural the s around the South Canterbury and North areas, so please make sure everything is locked away (yes LOCKED… I know that is a foreign word to some). And again please let me know of any suspicious acvity and vehicles. I have had some excellent informaon of suspicious acvity reported to me recently and this has allowed the tracking down of offenders and geng them before the Courts, but the more info the beer.

Several locals have contacted me about some phone scams/calls that they are again geng. It appears these foreign scammers are acve again. The Department of Internal Affairs runs an excellent website keeping track of all currents Scams. Their website address is www.dia.govt.nz/services –an –spam –reported –scams, and this gives phone, email, text, postal, prey well all the scams that are running. You can also update the site with any informaon that you have gained, which will also help others.

My last small item is that hopefully this week I will have a spreadsheet organised in Farmlands for anybody that wishes to purchase an - poaching signs. They are available in two sizes and the prices will be on them. My Big Bosses in Dunedin (District) have covered all of the setup costs so they are at a really great price. I will collate names and numbers before contacng the supplier. All prices will include GST and they will be able to be claimed back as I will organise individual invoicing. So just stop in and see Carol to register your interest (Yes I have volunteered her to do it without her knowledge and will probably pay the price later). I will also be doing a media release once we have signs up throughout the area, to make sure that we get the message out to the poachers that they are not welcome.

Thanks for your me and appreciate you reading my dribble. Cheers

Nick was in big trouble when he forgot his wedding anniversary. Molly, his wife told him, 'Tomorrow there beer be something in the driveway for me that goes from zero to 200 in 2 seconds flat.' The next morning the wife found a small package in the driveway. She opened it and found a brand new bathroom scale. Funeral arrangements for Nick have been set for Saturday at his favourite golf course.

Marn and his wife Debbie walk into a denst's office. Marn says to the denst, "Doc, I'm in one heck of a hurry I have three buddies sing out in my car waing for us to play golf, so forget about the anaesthec, I don't have me for the gums to get numb. I just want you to pull the tooth, and be done with it! Today is Friday and we have a 10:00 AM tee me at the best golf course in town and it's 9:15 already... ". The denst thought to himself, "My goodness, this is surely a very brave man asking to have a tooth pulled without using any- thing to kill the pain." So the denst asks Marn, "Which tooth is it sir?" Marn turned to his wife and said, "Open your mouth and show him dear...... "

Alex and Jim are trying to get in a quick eighteen holes, but there are two terrible lady golfers in front of them hing the ball everywhere but where it's supposed to go. Alex comments to Jim, 'Why don't you go over and ask if we can play through?' Jim gets about halfway there, turns and comes back so Alex asks, 'What's wrong?' Jim replies, 'One of them is my wife, and the other is my mistress.' Alex responds, 'That could be a problem. I'll go over and have a word.' He gets about halfway there and he turns and comes back, too. So Jim says ,'What's wrong?' Alex murmurs, 'Small world.'

Wednesday 14 ƌŧ September 2016 saw the coming together of a variety of different groups for DOC’s Conservaon week project, nave tree planng at the Wai O Toura Scenic Reserve, Gards Road, Duntroon, where once a barren place, has now been transformed back to life with what would have been a nave forested area pre -Polynesian mes. Some 65 people aended the day, planng out the Scenic Reserve with over 1500 locally sourced Kowhai and nave trees, and shrubs into the ground as part of DOC’s on going naonal project “Project Gold”. DOC’s aim of this project is to reintroduce nave and local sourced plants and trees to areas that would have once been covered before deforestaon. The diversity of the groups was quite extensive, ranging from DOC Rangers, Waitaki’s Wednesday Walkers Group, St Kevin’s year 12 students, local individual volunteers and a team from Southern Wide Real Estate, Oamaru, who also kindly supplied and fed the hard working group with a lunchme sausage sizzle. A er such an amazing and successful day, planning will commence soon to arrange for another plant out at the same locaon hopefully before the end of spring. FROM wrings by Alec Meikle

Looking back I had spent most of my life with stock so being a stock agent was always a job which would enhance my love of the outdoors, dogs and of course cars. With the support of my parents and of course my Uncle Jack who was a “dealer” and drover. School holidays were spent with my Uncle taking the butchers’ cale from the Waireka Sale every Tuesday across Ardgowan down Redcastle Hill to the Abaoirs in a jogger and horse and dogs. My dog in those days was a fox terrier who learnt from the sheep and cale dogs to head – hunt – heal to such an extent it was par for the course for my uncle to put me on the road with 200/300 sheep with the “foxy” shi ing the stock to new grazing. It caused some eyebrows to raise, but the traffic in those days was very light so we did not cause any problems.

I was in the Fi h Form at Waitaki when Dad was speaking to Mr Walter Spite, Manager of Naonal Mortgage and agency Company Limited and found out that the company required an “Office Junior”: pay £35 per annum paid monthly and Dad was to supply a bicycle for my use to run messages, pay the accounts etc. We worked five days (9 to 5) and Saturday morning. The year was 1945 and the “Boys” were just coming home from World War Two. The Staff when I began was made up of older men filling in for those returning and the only female was Miss Gillespie the typist who was very protecve of her posion and would not accept any other female around the office. I was “Office Junior” for nine months, promoted to “Cashier”, and then to “Ledger Keeper” with hand wrien ledgers balanced monthly.

Being ledger keeper brought me in contact with many clients and they became a big part of my Office experience. With these client contacts which stretched from – Hakataramea Valley to Duntroon made thoughts of being a Stock Agent realisc. The Auconeer had rered and Alex Gawn was appointed in his place. Alex had been the Agent at Kurow many years previous and his stories of life up the Waitaki impressed me. It was at this me I was introduced to Aucon Sales in as much as the Stock Agent enlisted my help to clerk Clearing Sales and the like which was an experience and an introducon in one. I was by now driving cars and had obtained my driving license. A er the jogger and horse my Uncle had purchased a Morris Crowley car and I wish I had it now. I learnt to drive in the Crowley in my early teens but I obtained my license in the family car, a V8 Ford. I had to make up my mind in 1954 what the future would be as I was offered promoon as the Kurow Agent – or Head Ledger Keeper at Dunedin. Kurow won and with marriage to Reta planned for the end of the year life would be changing, and change it did.

I arrived in Kurow in September with a new Mark 1 Ford Zephyr that cost $813 and le behind my jealous mates in Oamaru who did not believe my luck and began my introducons to the many clients of the Company I would be calling upon. Just before leaving Oamaru Mr Jim Ritchie the General Manager was up on business and a er congratulaons on being appointed an Agent gave me some of the best advice a new agent could receive: “You are going out into an old country area. My advice is to not cricise someone to another person as you will find out they are related”.

My first days going around the area with the rering Agent Danny Roberston was heavy frosts in the morning and Nor -westers for the rest of the day. Every morning when I met Danny his comments were as the wind buffeted down - “this will break her Alex”. It was spring with no grass and lambing upon our clients – it turned out not to be the best of seasons. A er nearly four weeks with Danny around the clients I said to him “When are we going to Omarama?” His reply suggested that I would have to find my own way around there as he had not been up since before the War. So I made the decision to go to Omarama with the Manger’s approval, stop the night at the Hotel and introduce myself. In the years ahead this turned out an outstanding success as our business grew.

In those days the saleyards at both Omarama and Duntroon were owned by the Publicans and it was quite a job to have them stock -proof and gates swinging before sales. We had a sale at Belfield in the Haka valley also Hakataramea Staon. Owned by the New Zealand and Australia Land Company it was by far my biggest client. Their annual dra Corriedale Ewes were part of the yarding and these ewes were always well sort a er with buyers coming to Belfield from as far away as Canterbury. Belfield was regarded as a Naonal Mortgage sale and the other Stock Forms mainly boycoed pung entries into the sale. The yarding we had at my first Omarama Sale was 380 A. D. Ewes from Quailburn, by my last sale before I was transferred we beat Wright Stephenson & Co (our main opposion) by topping the biggest yarding on the day by 15 sheep.

PLEASE Take the time to check out the information on www.kurow.org.nz We are almost ready to switch over to our new site and want info to be current KDIC - Irrigation Roadshow 18 October 4pm

The community is warmly invited to attend an irrigation roadshow at the Kurow Hotel on Tuesday 18 October at 4pm. Waterforce from the Timaru depot will be showing a full range of spray applicators, from k -lines to trailed irrigators and guns. The event is primarily focussed on irrigating small paddocks and smallholdings, notably irrigators from Doctors Creek and Paddy’s Flat. Not an irrigator? Not a problem. The Development Manager for KDIC, Marcus Brown, has organised the roadshow in response to enquiries from existing shareholders, as the Company considers the future upgrade of the existing open water race. New entrants will only be able to spray, with up to 600mm per hectare allocated. Existing irrigators can continue to spray or apply water through the existing border dykes. However, in the long term borders will possibly be phased out as a result of Plan Change 5. It's important that the community has the opportunity to look at developments in irrigation technology and cost effective application. Waterforce staff will be giving presentations and providing notes.

Project News

The Company is evaluating tenders received for the scheme expansion and upgrade. This will determine the future annual charges and the overall feasibility of the project. As soon as the Board can, it will advise all shareholders of the likely costs and actions required to progress to the next stage, detailed design with the selected contractor.
