SMBA CONCERT BANDS

The band for our April 11 concert is Bill Emerson & The Sweet Dixie Band. Bill is best known and na- tionally famous as the founder of the US Navy Blue- grass Band, Country Current , and served many years with them until his retirement from the Navy .

Previous to that, He was a founding member of the legendary Country Gentlemen . He also played with

Cliff Waldron as Emerson & Waldron , with Mark James King with SMBA president, Newton, and for a while with the King of Bluegrass, Walt Crider during a 2008 concert. Jimmy Martin, at the height of Jimmy’s career. He is the man who introduced the standard “Fox on the Run” to bluegrass.

For our March concert there’s really not need much to Bill has many award nominations from IBMA& say. The band consists of James on , Kevin on , Chris Hill on banjo and Tom Timberlake on bass.

Whether it be a James King signature ballad or a good ole foot stomper, James and the band really know how to make a crowd respond to their style and show. They get the crowd into their music and show in every form. The James King Band is based around the soulful sounds of James King's lead vocals. The high tenor harmony of Kevin Prater round out a wonderful vocal ability second to none in all of bluegrass.

It’s been some time since I’ve seen Dean Sapp and Harford Express perform. The last time was when they showcased at IBMA a few years ago. They are a traditional, hard driving bluegrass band from the upper Eastern Shore region of Maryland.

I encourage all to come out and see and enjoy this fine group.

FEATURED SMBA MEMBER BAND

Waitin On A Train is based in York County, Pennsylvania. It’s a three piece band (most of the time), acoustic (most of the time), bluegrassy band. The lineup consists of Tony Staub on Mandolin, Paul Wykowski on Guitar and Bert Streavig on Standup Bass. All three members contribute to the vocals.

The band came about around the year 2005. While Tony and Paul have been there since the beginning Bert has been laying down the big bass lines since January 2007.

The group started off playing old standards from , Hank Williams Sr, Monroe Brothers, L to R: Bent Streavig, Tony Staub, and Paul Wylowski Lightning Hopkins and all sorts of early acoustic mu- sic. They recorded their first CD called Still Waitin back in 2005. Soon after that was recorded, the group added bass player, Adam Sullivan whom they hooked up with at the 2005 York County Fiddlers Festival. The band became official and had their first show in Octo- ber of 2005 , and began playing anywhere from Street Fairs to Small cafes to Rock Clubs to Farm Festivals. NATIONAL BLUEGRASS NEWS

Each year, the United States Postal Service considers the issuance of approximately 25 commemorative postage stamps. The hon- oree must have been deceased for at least 10 years. The 10th anniversary of Bill Monroe's death occurred on September 9, 2006, meaning he is now eligible.

The first two opportunities to honor Bill Monroe with a postage stamp, in 2006 and 2007, have now passed. The centennial of his birth, on September 13, 2011, would be the perfect occasion to celebrate his musical legacy. Since the selection committee considers subjects three years in advance of the issuance date, that means this year and next year are our opportunity to influence their choice for 2011.

The first step is for a citizens' committee to select, and narrow down to approximately 25, the worthy nominees for each year. This they do by considering letters, cards, petitions, etc., sent to them by the public at large. After that, the committee considers art work and other details for the stamp. Because Bill Monroe's music is appreci- ated worldwide, nominations from outside the USA would be very appropriate.
