2 Mass of the Lord’s Supper

As we eat his flesh that was sacrificed for us, we are made strong, and, as we drink his Blood that was poured out for us, we are washed clean.

Remember what I the Lord have done for you, That in this sacrament of service so should you do for each other.

And while they ate an evening meal arose from the table, And he wiped away the grime of his disciples’ feet.

He tended to their simplest need knelt down as if he were servant. And he bound up all the woundings of their journeyed feet.

He tied a towel ‘round his waist cleansing their cares with his garment, And with living water poured, he washed away their woes.

So as we eat this evening meal, who will arise from the table? Who will wipe away the grime of our companions’ feet? 8 Prayer over the Offerings

Communion Anthem Stopford

Jesu, lover of my soul, let me to thy bosom fly, While the nearer waters roll, while the tempest still is high; Hide me, O my Savior, hide, ‘till the storm of life be past; Safe into the haven guide, O receive my soul at last!

Other refuge have I none; hangs my helpless soul on thee; Leave, ah! leave me not alone, still support and comfort me. All my trust in thee is stayed, all my help from thee I bring; Cover my defenseless head with the shadow of thy wing.

Thou, O Christ, art all I want; more than all in thee I find. Raise the fallen, cheer the faint, heal the sick, and lead the blind. Just and holy is thy name; I am all unrighteousness. False and full of sin I am; thou art full of truth and grace.

Plenteous grace on thee is found, grace to cover all my sin. Let the healing streams abound; make and keep me pure within. Thou of life the fountain art; freely let me take of thee. Spring thou up within my heart. Rise to all eternity. Amen. 11 Prayer after Communion

The Lord Jesus loves us and gave up his life for us. Few of us will be called to die the way he died. Yet all of us lay down our lives with him and for him. If we would be faithful to the gospel we must take up our cross daily and follow him.

15 Please turn off all cell phones and observe a spirit of prayerful recollection before the Office of Tenebrae begins.

Office of Tenebræ

Tenebrae is the Latin for "darkness." This service, originally the combined offices of Matins and Lauds on Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday, takes its name from the responsory, Tenebrae factæ sunt, “darkness was wrought.” Lamentations is a small psalter of communal laments over Jerusalem, following its destruction by the Babylonians in 587 BC. The first four chapters are alphabetic acrostics (with a stanza for each of the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet), and the fifth has the same number of verses as the alphabet. Each time the cantor sings the various strophes of the lamentations, the choir first sings a brief chant-like setting of a letter of the Hebrew alphabet in keeping with the structure of the book. The extinction of all lights in the Basilica symbolizes the temporary triumph of the prince of darkness over the Light of the World, and the loud noise, or strepitus, at the conclusion of the service suggests the earthquake described in the Passion narratives. The single candle left burning is the symbol and promise of Christ's triumph over death and darkness.

Lamentations 1: 1-5 Please be seated.

Here begins the Lamentations of the Prophet Jeremiah. Aleph. How lonely she is now, the once crowded city! Widowed is she who was mistress over nations; the princess among the provinces has been made a toiling slave. Beth. Bitterly she weeps at night, tears upon her cheeks, with not one to console her of all her dear ones; her friends have all betrayed her and become her enemies. Ghimel. Judah has fled into exile from oppression and cruel slavery; yet where she lives among the nations she finds no place to rest: all her persecutors come upon her where she is narrowly confined. Daleth. The roads to Sion mourn for lack of pilgrims going to her feasts; all her gateways are deserted, her priests groan, and her virgins sigh; she is in bitter grief. He. Her foes are uppermost, her enemies are at ease; the Lord has punished her for her many sins. Her little ones have gone away, captive before the foe. Jerusalem, Jerusalem, return to the Lord, your God.

Lamentations 1: 10-14 Please be seated.

Jod. The foe stretched out his hand to all her treasures; she has seen those nations enter her sanctuary whom you forbade to come into your assembly. Caph. All her people groan, searching for bread; they give their treasures for food, to retain the breath of life. Look, O Lord, and see how worthless I have become! Lamed. Come, all you who pass by the way, look and see whether there is any suffering like my suffering, which has been dealt me when the Lord afflicted me on the day of his blazing wrath. Mem. From on high he sent fire down into my very frame; he spread a net for my feet, and overthrew me. He left me desolate, in pain all the day. Nun. He has kept watch over my sins; by his hand they have been plaited; they have settled about my neck; He has brought my strength to its knees; the Lord has delivered me into their grip. I am unable to rise. Jerusalem, Jerusalem, return to the Lord, your God.

Concluding Prayer

The one remaining candle is borne down the center aisle. Only after the candle has completely disappeared into the foyer of the Basilica is the “strepitus,” or sustained noise, to begin. Once the candle reemerges into the Basilica, the noise ceases. The ministers, followed by the assembly, then depart in silence.

Let the paschal fast be kept sacred. Let it be observed everywhere on Good Friday and, where possible, prolonged through Holy Saturday, as a way of coming to the joys of the Sunday of the Resurrection uplifted and with a welcoming heart. (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, 110)

Ne proiicias me a facie tua: Do not cast me away from your presence et spiritum sanctum tuum ne auferas a me. take not your holy spirit from me.

Docebo iniquos vias tuas: I will teach transgressors your ways, et impii ad te convertentur. that sinners may return to you.

Libera me de sanguinibus, Deus, Rescue me from bloodshed, O God, Deus salutis meae: God of my salvation, et exsultabit lingua mea iustitiam tuam. and then my tongue shall ring out your justice.

40 Anthem Sowerby

This is the Spirit’s entry now: the water and the Word, The cross of Jesus on your brow, the seal both felt and heard. This miracle of life reborn comes from the Lord of breath; The perfect man from life was torn; our life comes through his death. Let water be the sacred sign that we must die each day To rise again by his design as followers of his way. Renewing Spirit, hear our praise for your baptismal power That washes us through all his days. Cleanse us again this hour.

Assembly’s Renewal of Baptismal Promises

This is a moment of renewed commitment. Death to sin and life in God are sealed anew in faith and life-giving water.
