October 13, 2019 Season of Pentecost

Here, are open. Here the sinful, the guilty, the unworthy, the poor, the penniless, may come. Here the weary spirit may bring its burden, the broken spirit its sorrow, the guilty spirit its sin, the backsliding spirit its wandering. All are welcome here.

SONG: SPIRIT OF GOD The blessing of the Father, gift of grace and love. The promise of the Savior, for power from above. Oh, wondrous gift that’s given, for confidence and mission, Holy Spirit, You make all things new.

CHORUS Spirit of God, breathe on me now. Source of life, come, revive my weary heart. Spirit of God, shine on me now. Light of life, come, ignite my longing heart.

Come and lift the dark clouds of doubt and unbelief. Shine upon my soul now, for by Your rays I see. Clearer, closer, deeper, the love of my Redeemer, Holy Spirit, You make all things new. CHORUS

Where You breathe hope thrives. The dead return to life. And the dark must flee the breaking day. By Your light I see the glory of my King, Beholding Him I will be changed. CHORUS

CALL TO WORSHIP “O God you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. You hem me in behind and before, and ley your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it.” - PSALM 139

1 SONG: JESUS PAID IT ALL I hear the savior say, “Thy strength indeed is small; Child of weakness, watch and pray, find in me thine all in all”

CHORUS Jesus paid it all, all to Him I owe; Sin had left a crimson stain, he washed it white as snow.

Lord, now indeed I find, thy power and thine alone; Can change the leper’s spots, and melt the heart of stone. CHORUS

And when before the throne, I stand in Him complete; Jesus died my soul to save, my lips shall still repeat. CHORUS

O praise the one who paid my debt, and raised this life up from the dead. (4x)

CHORUS Jesus paid it all, all to Him I owe; Sin had left a crimson stain, he washed it white as snow.

SONG: HEAL US EMMANUEL CHORUS Heal us, Emmanuel, here we are, we long to feel Thy touch. Deep wounded souls to Thee we fly, O Savior hear our cry.

Our faith is feeble, we confess, we faintly trust Thy word, But will You pity us the less? Be that far from You Lord! CHORUS

Remember him who once applied, with trembling for relief. “Lord, I believe, “ with tears he cried, “O help my unbelief!” CHORUS

She, too, who touched you in the press, and healing virtue stole, Was answered, “Daughter, go in peace, Thy faith has made thee whole.” CHORUS

Like her, with hopes and fears we come, to touch You if we may; O send us not despairing home; Send none unhealed away. CHORUS

2 READING “Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? 8 If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! 9 If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, 10 even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me. 11 If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,” 12 even the dark- ness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you. 13 For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. 14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. 15 My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. 16 Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.” - PSALM 139

CONFESSION AND ASSURANCE

Leader: Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting! - PSALM 139

All: Holy Father, you see us as we are, and know our inmost thoughts. We con- fess that we are unworthy of your gracious care. We forget that all life comes from you and that to you all life returns. We have not sought to do your will with our whole hearts. We have not lived as grateful children, nor loved as Christ loved us. Apart from you, we are nothing. Only your grace can sustain us. Lord, in your mercy, forgive us, heal us, and make us whole. Set us free from our sin, and restore us to the joy of your salvation now and forever. Amen.

Leader: The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever; he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. - PSALM 103

All: “Those who sow in tears shall reap with shouts of joy!” - PSALM 126

3 SONG: THY MERCY Thy mercy, my God, is the theme of my song, The joy of my heart. and the boast of my tongue; Thy free grace alone, from the first to the last, Has won my affections, and bound my soul fast.

Without Thy sweet mercy I could not live here; Sin would reduce me to utter despair; But, through Thy free goodness, my spirits revive, And He that first made me still keeps me alive.

Thy mercy is more than a match for my heart, Which wonders to feel its own hardness depart; Dissolved by Thy goodness, I fall to the ground, And weep to the praise of the mercy I’ve found.

Great Father of mercies, Thy goodness I own, And the covenant love of Thy crucified Son; All praise to the Spirit, Whose whisper divine Seals mercy, and pardon, and righteousness mine.

All praise to the Spirit, Whose whisper divine Seals mercy, and pardon, and righteousness mine.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

SERMON: Masterpiece - Benjie Slaton “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared be- forehand, that we should walk in them.” - EPHESIANS 2:8-10

4 REFLECTION AND RESPONSE Can you name one person who has been instrumental in helping you see the masterpiece that God has made you to be?

CELEBRATION OF COMMUNION

A word about communion. This is a time for all people to seek the Lord. For Christians, Communion (also called the Lord’s Supper or Eucharist which means ‘thanksgiving’) is a time to seek their sav- ior by faith, to be renewed and strengthened for obedience by him, and to commune with him in the bread and the wine. All baptized Christians who have placed their faith in Christ alone and are at peace with their neighbor are welcomed to come. If you are not a Christian, you are still welcome to come forward, but cross your arms and the server will pray a brief blessing over you. Similarly, we welcome children to come forward, but please only partake once you have publicly proclaimed your faith and been baptized.

When directed by ushers, walk down the center aisle to the serving station for your section, giving time for the person in front of you to partake. After eating, you may deposit your cup in the waste basket and return to your seats on the outside aisle. Gluten-free wafers are available from each server underneath the napkin. Next to each communion station is a basket in which you are welcome to make a financial gift if you choose. We believe that returning a portion of our financial resources to God and his work is an act of worship and devotion. You may always give online at www.gracepeacechurch.org.

5 WORDS OF INSTITUTION “Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.” - MATTHEW 26

All: Gracious God, pour out Your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these Your gifts of bread and wine, that the bread we break and the cup we bless may be the communion of the body and blood of Christ. By Your Spirit make us one with Christ, that we may be one with all who share this feast, united in ministry in every place. As this bread is Christ’s body for us, send us out to be the body of Christ in the world. Amen.

Leader: Let us proclaim the mystery of the faith:

All: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

Leader: Christ, our Passover, has been sacrificed for us. These are the gifts of God for the people of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith and with thanksgiving.

SONG: WE WILL FEAST

CHORUS We will feast in the house of Zion; We will sing with our hearts restored. “He has done great things,” we will say together; We will feast and weep no more.

We will not be burned by the fire; he is the LORD our God. We are not consumed, by the flood; upheld, protected, gathered up. CHORUS

In the dark of night, before the dawn, my soul, be not afraid. For the promised morning, oh how long? Oh God of Jacob, be my strength. CHORUS

Every vow we’ve broken and betrayed; You are the Faithful one. And from the garden to the grave, bind us together, bring shalom. CHORUS

6 SONG: ALL HAIL THE POWER All hail the pow’r of Jesus’ Name! Let angels prostrate fall; Bring forth the royal diadem, and crown Him Lord of all! Bring forth the royal diadem, and crown Him Lord of all!

Ye chosen seed of Israel’s race, ye ransomed from the fall, Hail Him Who saves you by His grace, and crown Him Lord of all! Hail Him Who saves you by His grace, and crown Him Lord of all!

Let every kindred, every tribe, on this terrestrial ball, To Him all majesty ascribe, and crown Him Lord of all! To Him all majesty ascribe, and crown Him Lord of all!
