Problem After Perestroika ushered in new opportunities for public evangelism in Russia, local and foreign evangelists have been baptizing thousands of new converts every year. The rapid growth resulting from these crusades has brought about new challenges. This study analyzes some of the challenges associated with public evangelism in Russia and suggests a strategy to improve the long­ term results of these campaigns. Method A descriptive analysis of John Carter's 1992 evangelistic campaign in Nizhniy Novgorod city was conducted in order to suggest ways to improve long-term results from public campaigns. The strengths and weaknesses of evangelistic campaigns in Russia are discussed. A practical strategy for conducting public evangelism in Russia is clearly presented which covers the pre­ evangelism phase, the conducting of the crusade, and the post- evangelism phase. Results The socio-political conditions which prevailed in Communist-dominated Russia made public evangelism an inappro­ priate method of evangelism until 1989. After the dismantling of Communism unlimited doors for public evangelism in Russia were opened. Today public evangelism is the major source of church growth in Russia. A major problem facing Russian evangelists, however, is a high attrition rate among new members. Several factors have contributed to this. First, there was little effort among Russian pastors toward building a proper concept of evangelism among members. Furthermore, most members were mere spectators while the local pastors and conference officials dominated the crusade management. Therefore, evangelists need to ensure that the local church is empowered to make the crusade their own. Evangelists have a tendency towards preoccupation with the actual conducting of the crusade while neglecting pre- and post­ evangelism phases. Obstacles to success during the pre­ evangelism phase include misallocation of resources, lack of entry events, and failure to draw up action plans. The conducting of the crusade is often hampered by the lack of a system for distributing incentives and neglecting various cultural factors. The greatest need, however, is for a properly planned and funded follow-up phase. The biblical model of discipling has not been implemented and churches are failing to assimilate thousands of new members. Conclusion The purpose of this paper is to suggest a strategy for public evangelism in Russia in order to meet the needs of the pre-evangelism, the evangelism, and the post-evangelism phases of public crusades. Each evangelist, whether local or foreign, should give adequate priority to follow-up plans even before the crusade begins, and properly meet the many needs of spiritually mature members as well as new members. De Simone 2012 Abstract In the mid-seventeenth century Nikon, Patriarch of Moscow, introduced a number of reforms to bring the Russian Orthodox Church into ritualistic and liturgical conformity with the Greek Orthodox Church. However, Nikon‘s reforms met staunch resistance from a number of clergy, led by figures such as the archpriest Avvakum and Bishop Pavel of Kolomna, as well as large portions of the general Russian population. Nikon‘s critics rejected the reforms on two key principles: that conformity with the Greek Church corrupted Russian Orthodoxy‘s spiritual purity and negated Russia‘s historical and Christian destiny as the Third Rome – the final capital of all Christendom before the End Times. Developed in the early sixteenth century, what became the Third Rome Doctrine proclaimed that Muscovite Russia inherited the political and spiritual legacy of the Roman Empire as passed from Constantinople. In the mind of Nikon‘s critics, the Doctrine proclaimed that Constantinople fell in 1453 due to God‘s displeasure with the Greeks. Therefore, to Nikon‘s critics introducing Greek rituals and liturgical reform was to invite the same heresies that led to the Greeks‘ downfall.

It is applied not only to the traditional religious institutions, like Moscow Patriarchy, but also to different heterodox religious movements. Now we can state a fact of the origi- nally shaped religion policy of Moscow. Orthodox Christianity in Russia has one universally recognized center – Moscow Patriarchy. Its position is shared by 90% of Russian Christians. But we can’t say that the leaders have one consolidated opinion about the problems of the relations between Islam and Christianity. We can single out two groups; one can be called „For Islam” and the second „Against Islam”. Their followers have different views on the problems of proselytism, inter-religious dialogue and religion policy of the state and the foreign policy of Russia. The same, but much more multifaceted situation is in Russian Islam. Muslims in Russia don’t have any universally recognized authority. There are several organizations, regional or aspiring to the center position, authorities, sheikhs and popular homilists with their own opinions. Here we try to classify the main organizations and their views on the problem of a dialogue with Russian Orthodoxy, Christianity at all and the Russian State’s regional policy. The collapse of the USSR was marked by a rapid growth of interest among the population in conventional and non-conventional forms of religion, where some sought a new ideology, some an alternative to the annoying communism, while others sought resources for career advancement.
