Big League Chew was invented by Rob Nelson, a former Cornell University lefthander who was pitching in Oregon in 1977 for the fabled Portland Mavericks when he came up with the idea for a new type of bubble gum.

Rob was literally sitting in the Portland bullpen, watching his team- mates chewing other less salubrious stuff, when he thought that shredded bubble gum would be a much more fun option.

Rob shared the idea with Mav teammate Jim Bouton who liked the concept so much he spent the next two years searching for a gum company to manufacture and distribute Big League Chew. He succeeded, and BLC quickly became the must-have bubble gum for ballplayers in the littlest leagues to the Big Leagues.

Today, over 40 years later, Big League Chew is the #1-selling shredded bubble gum in the world — with over 800 million pouches sold. It is manufactured in the USA by Ford Gum of Akron, New York.

College for 21 years before joining Coach ’s staff. Hines coached more than 40 players who went on to become major leaguers. Hines feels that a batter must experience 1,000 at bats a year over three years under game conditions before he can even begin to get a handle on his strike zone. At this stage, the batter will know what pitches he can handle. Most important, he’ll be mentally prepared. “For me, hitting is like a scale. When the pitcher has a 1-2 or 0-2 count, he has the advantage. But if the count is even, the scale is balanced.” Hines believes hitters are in either of two groups: inside-out or outside-in. The inside-out batter usually hits to the opposite field while the outside-in batter tends to be a pull hitter. Hines said that his philosophy in shaping the complete hitter is to teach the inside-out batter the outside-in swing, and vice-versa for the outside-in hitter. An ideal example was All- American Mike Sodders, a third baseman for ASU a number of years ago. “He was a classic pull hitter,” said Hines. “But we had him learn the inside-out swing.” As a result of the change, Sodders hit .424, up from .349 a year before. He belted 22 homers (14 in 1980), hit 19 doubles (6 in 1980), had 100 RBIs (55 in 1980), scored 98 runs (59 in 1980), had 114 hits (81 in 1980), and had a of .758! Hines said that 90 percent of missed hits are underneath the ball. Therefore, his hitters are drilled to hit on top of the ball. During pre-game batting practice, his hitters are instructed to hit the first five balls to the opposite side. “We want them to hit the first two on the ground, then drive the next three. Then we let them pull the ball,” Hines said. The hours of practice pay off. The hit-and-run is one of Hines’ greatest weapons. “Technically, it’s more run-and- hit. Any time you put a runner in motion and cause the infielders to break for the bags, you’re going to open up the defense. The fielders then will be off balance if it is executed properly.” Hines believes that hitting to the Page 32 Collegiate Baseball Friday, Oct. 5, 2018
