For Immediate Release Wednesday, August 15, 2018 FIN Atlantic International Film Festival announces full festival program for event, Sept. 13 - 20 in Halifax (Halifax, NS) – FIN Atlantic International Film Festival announced its full program today, featuring over 125 film screenings and a full slate of special events, to be presented over eight days in Halifax, September 13-20. "Bingeing has become the term for spending countless hours watching television but truth be told - film festivals have always been the ‘binge’”, said Wayne Carter, Executive Director. “The best way to experience the magic of a film festival is specifically to buy a pass and spend an extended amount of time seeing films, documentaries and shorts that will surprise, enlighten and entertain you. So this is our invitation this year - binge on us! We are even going to make it easy with daily passes that are an excuse to skip work and all your responsibilities of the day and get lost in ideas and excitement. And this year we have excitement!” The Opening Night Gala returns to the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium at the Dalhousie Arts Centre on Thursday, September 13 at 7 p.m. Splinters, directed by celebrated Halifax filmmaker Thom Fitzgerald, has been selected as the Festival’s Opening Night Gala presentation. • 3 Destinos, Una Lucha Por Sobrevivir

  • Olympia Dukakis
OSCAR®-WINNING OLYMPIA DUKAKIS AND BRENDA FRICKER STAR IN BFI LONDON LESBIAN & GAY FILM FESTIVAL OPENING NIGHT FILM: CLOUDBURST Friday 23 March 2012, 6.30pm and 8.45pm at BFI Southbank February 9 2012 The 26th BFI London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival (23 March – 1 April 2012) today announces the Opening Night film is Thom Fitzgerald’s Cloudburst. Starring Oscar®-winning actors Olympia Dukakis (Moonstruck, Steel Magnolias, Tales of the City) and Brenda Fricker (My Left Foot, Home Alone II, Albert Nobbs) as a pair of septuagenarian lesbian lovers, the film is an unpredictable, heart-warming and romantic road movie. Cloudburst is also a ground-breaking and forceful remedy to the virtual invisibility of older lesbians on the big screen - and it’s very funny. The film shows older women in love and deals with some of the harsh realities of ageing with wit, humour and a great deal of affection. Dukakis plays the forcefully butch and occasionally foul-mouthed Stella, whose language really does make grown men blush and the actress has described the film as “terrific, funny, moving and outrageous.” Fricker is Dottie her lover of 31 years, whose ill-health has forced her granddaughter to trick her into entering a care home. When Dottie is sprung by Stella they decide to make for Canada where lesbian marriage is legal, but the police are on their tail. These two elderly dykes on the run get into a series of scrapes on their way to the altar and spend a blissful day by the sea with a young hitch- hiker who has emotional issues of his own.

  • Intersectionality and Genre in Thom Fitzgerald's Cloudburst (2010)
TRANSGRESSING BORDERS: INTERSECTIONALITY AND GENRE IN THOM FITZGERALD’S CLOUDBURST (2010) Ulla Kriebernegg* Abstract This paper discusses aspects of identity and intersectionality in Thom Fitzgerald’s road movie Cloudburst and focusses on the role genre conventions play for the construction of the protagonists’ identities. Canadian nursing home escape stories and their interpretations can be seen as textual interventions in the deconstruction of the limited spatiality of old age and counteract stereotyping on several levels of intersectionality. Introduction: The Journey of Life The topic of escape is of course a foundational motif in American literature that can be traced as far back as the first immigrants’ escape from Europe (see Bluefarb). Care home narratives that culminate in escape include both old men and women who set out on their life-altering journeys as heroes and heroines. Thomas R. Cole analyzes the topos of the journey in his 1992 groundbreaking book The Journey of Life: A Cultural History of Aging in America, tracing it back to biblical traditions. The journey as escape narrative already played a role in late nineteenth century care home narratives such as Mary Wilkins Free- man’s “A Mistaken Charity” (1887), in which two elderly sisters run away from an ‘Old Ladies’ Home’, since they feel like «two forlorn prisoners» in their genteel surroundings» (Wilkins Freeman 244).

PRODUCTION NOTES PROMO https://vimeo.com/371406175/549f901097 SHORT SYNOPSIS When conservative, Texas church-choir director Maybelline (Jacki Weaver) inherits her recently deceased son’s drag club, she surprises her closed-minded husband and everyone else she knows by moving alone to San Francisco to save the club from bankruptcy. In this raucous, racy new environment, she begins to open up and find new meaning for her life, even becoming a mother-figure to the club’s flamboyant performers …until a surprise visit threatens to upend her new life. Thom Fitzgerald’s lyrical comedy-drama boasts a fiery supporting cast, including Lucy Liu, Adrian Grenier, Mya Taylor (Tangerine, PSIFF 2015) and drag superstar Jackie Beat. FULL SYNOPSIS Maybelline (Jacki Weaver), a middle-aged homemaker and choir director of her conservative church, has spent her entire life in rural Texas. Despite her unconditional love for her only son, she is deeply conflicted that the values held by her community and her domineering husband strongly reject his lifestyle - that of a flamboyant drag queen in San Francisco. Soon after receiving the sad word that her son died of a drug overdose, Maybelline defies her husband and travels to San Francisco where she meets Nathan (Adrian Grenier), her son's life partner, and Sienna (Lucy Liu), a free-spirited single mother who was his closest friend. Maybelline is shocked to learn that because her son died without a will, she has inherited the drag nightclub of which he was both owner and star performer. When she discovers the club is on the verge of bankruptcy, she impulsively decides to help salvage it, while moving in with Sienna, who struggles to make ends meet.
