Green Bay Legislators Introduce Bill to Name Walnut Street Bridge after Packers Legend

Madison, WI – Representatives Steffen, Macco, Shelton and Senator Wimberger introduced legislation this past week that would designate and mark the Walnut Street Bridge in Green Bay as the Bart Starr Memorial Bridge.

“What a fitting tribute to a man who was a great example both on and off the field. Bart Starr was truly someone to look up to and model yourself after and I am proud to be part of recognizing his legacy and influence he had throughout the City of Green Bay and the state of ,” said Representative Steffen (R-Howard), lead author of the legislation.

"As a kid who grew up watching him play, I can tell you that Bart Starr is as synonymous with Green Bay as Vince . Bart and his wife Cherry had a great impact on our state and gave back to Wisconsin through their work with at-risk kids and through their efforts to fund cancer research. Renaming the Walnut Street Bridge is a great way to honor the man, his family, and everyone who benefitted from Bart’s work on and off the field,” said Representative Macco (R- Ledgeview).

“Bart Starr’s outstanding career left an indelible mark on our city, and it is only fitting that he is memorialized for all to see. However, the most important part of his legacy is the impact that he and Cherry continued to have on our state long after his career ended. His generosity and giving spirit are an example for all,” said Senator Wimberger (R-Green Bay).

“Bart Starr was an extraordinary person both on and off the football field. Designating the Walnut Street bridge as the Bart Starr Memorial Bridge is a great way to bring our community together and honor the person who contributed so much to the Green Bay community,” said Representative Shelton (D-Green Bay).

Bart Starr passed away in May 2019 at the age of 85. The Bart Starr Memorial Bridge designation would recognize Mr. Starr’s tremendous athletic achievements and his life-long contributions to the state of Wisconsin.
