Newsletter August 2017
Extracts from NEWSLETTER AUGUST 2017 A GREAT INITIATIVE OF THE “FARMERS DAY” BY KEVIN SHEEDY In the second year of the Farmers Round, the Bombers played Geelong on the MCG on Saturday May 13th. There were many stalls and entertainment for supporters outside the ground prior to the game, and Kevin Dale, a member of our Association and President of the Dick Reynolds Club and Collins Street Dons, was seen whipping up the boys before the game, it worked, because they had a great win . This event has become a great annual match and will only grow bigger in future years. Well done Sheeds. Two of our past players, Ian “Bluey” Shelton and Russell Blew, were invited to the Essendonians function prior to the game and are pictured with Peter Hughes, the President of the Essendonians. OUR ASSOCIATION SUPPORTS EFC APPLICATION TO FIELD A WOMEN’S TEAM The EFC has now officially submitted an application to the AFL to field a women’s team in the AFL in season 2019. As part of this application, we have confirmed that the same conditions would apply to women who represent the EFC at AFL or VFL to become members of our Association following their playing days, which we believe adds value to the application. There is of course no guarantee that the EFC will be granted a licence in 2019, however at some time in the future there will be a women’s team representing the club, which we should all support wholeheartedly. The article below should be of interest to all Bomber supporters. -
Official Opening of the Gartland Exhibition
THE HON RICHARD MARLES MP DEPUTY LEADER OF THE AUSTRALIAN LABOR PARTY SHADOW MINISTER FOR DEFENCE MEMBER FOR CORIO KEY NOTE ADDRESS – OFFICIAL OPENING OF THE GARTLAND EXHIBITION GEELONG, VICTORIA THURSDAY, 19 SEPTEMBER 2019 ***CHECK AGAINST DELIVERY*** Art is the highest form of expression of the human spirit. After the chores of life, food, shelter, work; art is what we do. Just as the exquisite plumage is to the bird of paradise, art is the human signature and it is what we leave behind. From the rock paintings of Kakadu, to the Terracotta Warriors, to the Mona Lisa, art comes in an infinite variety of forms but what underpins all of it is identity. An ancient culture telling its stories, a society giving an expression of the afterlife, a portrait of a mysterious woman, all of these are voices from the distant past telling us who they are. In this exhibition “The Greatest Team of All”, in this our gallery, there is the best telling of the story of who we are that you will ever see. The creation of this exhibition by Bob Gartland, is itself an astounding work of art. It is the closest that we will get to the distillation of Geelong’s identity. And that is important, because over the journey our identity has gone through many changes. From our incorporation as a city in 1849 by an act of the NSW Parliament as a port of a fledgling far flung settlement, to a gateway to the Gold Rush, to the centre of national action when Australia rode on the back of the sheep, a country town an industrial centre, to the present day when we are perhaps writing the next chapter in Geelong’s identity, a university town, a centre of public insurance, a lifestyle city. -

To use another overblown metaphor, clubs are also the essential fabric out of which the rich, variegated tapestry of the game’s history has been woven. -
Victoria Park David De Angelis – 17990254 What Is the Historical Legacy the Collingwood Football Club Has at Victoria Park, Melbourne?
HIS3MHI – Making History Research Project – Victoria Park David De Angelis – 17990254 What is the historical legacy the Collingwood Football Club has at Victoria Park, Melbourne? The eerie sound of the 2:30pm train arriving at Victoria Park train station echoes and sends vibrations up through the grandstand as I sit on an old wooden seat inside an empty Sherrin stand. Whilst I sit on my wooden seat overlooking the skeleton that was once the R.T Rush stand, I am in amazement, shock and awe of how this current incarnation of Victoria Park is a far-cry from the bustling coliseum of black and white it used to be when I was a child. The eerie sound of that 2:30pm train arriving at Victoria Park station nearly twenty years ago, would have been drowned out with the sounds of rusty turnstiles rotating as droves of supporters make their way through the gates, the sound of magazine vendors’ yelling “RECORDS! GET YOUR FOOTY RECORDS!” as well as the hysteria that is associated with pre-game excitement. In this illustrated essay, I will address the historical legacy the Collingwood Football Club has shared over one hundred years at their undisputed home, Victoria Park. From the club’s humble beginnings of being a football club that represented the working-class people of Collingwood, its invincibility throughout the depression era, the various developments that occurred at the ground to the fateful day Collingwood played its last AFL match at in 1999. Within the four walls of the Collingwood Town Hall, the Collingwood Football Club was formed on Friday February the 12th, 18921. -
