Chairman’s Words by Councillor Annie Makepeace, Chairman of Wincham Parish Council

Now the weather is warmer more of us will be spending time out of doors.

Wincham is becoming friendlier, and more people are helping to improve it. Thank you all. We have been blessed with the gift of a massive stone trough and the plants for it, you will see it by the black and white signpost at Rayner’s corner. (That’s the crossroads by the school for those of you new to our village.)

This year we begin the Wildlife garden challenge, which will encourage and support our indigenous flora and fauna as well as beautify our environment. It will alternate with the Best Kept Garden competition. The Scarecrows you created are terrific and we hope there will be even more next year, now others have seen what we can do.

And welcome to our new residents, and if you need any help or support you only have to ask us, (contact details on the back page) and we will help in any way we can.

2 News Round Up

Black Greyhound The site now has been fully secured—which is much safer. Thank you to all those who reported the abandoned car in April, which has now been removed. At time of going to press there is no more news regarding the future plans for the site.

Best Kept Garden Just to note this competition runs every 2 years. The next competition will be in 2017. This year there is the Wildlife Garden competition.

Fracking INEOS gave a presentation to the Parish Council back in February about the possibility of fracking in the area. Frack-Free ran an event at Wincham Community Centre in early May stating the case against potential fracking in the area.

Interactive Speed Signs These are on order from West and Council. We hope that the signs will be erected within the next 12 weeks.

Post Office The “new look Spar and Post Office” is now fully open. The Post Office counter is now open from 7am until 10pm every day.

Clean for the Queen Event Thank you to all those who attended the Clean for the Queen Event in April. It was great to see the volunteers give up their time to improve cleanliness around the village.

Dog Fouling Please remember to pick up after your dogs. Also, a polite reminder that dogs are not allowed on the “playground” area of Linnards Lane Playing Fields.

4 INCONSIDERATE AND UNSAFE PARKING

We have had to mention this in the past and recently it has become a very serious issue with near misses and damage to cars and property.

The Cheshire Police have been out to Wincham and have been looking around our roads and have come up with the following statement.

“We have seen a number of vehicles parked partly on and partly off the pavement, probably in an attempt to leave the road space for passing vehicles or to protect their own from passing traffic. However, this is causing a problem for pedestrians, as there is often insufficient room being allowed for them to pass without being obstructed, particularly in the case of parents with children or buggies/prams. Also many cars have been parked within 10m of a junction. This is very dangerous– can cause accidents and is an offence under Rule 243 of the Highway Code. Unfortunately, so many drivers become complacent and a little thoughtless with regard to their responsibilities and the requirements of the Highway Code.

In the absence of any parking restrictions, vehicles must park safely on the road, away from junctions and leave the pavement free for the use of those it is intended for, that is to say pedestrians. If a vehicle parked properly on the road causes traffic to have to negotiate around it, then this is simply a matter for the due care and attention of road users. The roads are wide enough for vehicles to park properly and to allow other road users to pass without inconveniencing pedestrians attempting to use pavements as they should expect to around the village.

I would ask that the Wincham Parish Council circulate this comment in their next newsletter. If there is no improvement then Fixed Penalty Notices (FPN) will be issued but I would prefer that residents are given a fair chance to address the matter and we do not need to go the FPN route. In the short term the Local Police will be using advisory notices placed on vehicles to assist in spreading the message.’” If you would like any more information– please contact PCSO Phil Hambleton - [email protected]

5 Wincham Wildlife-Friendly Garden Competition 2016 Councillor Linda Moss was a passionate wildlife gardener. You may recall that the Parish Council chose to plant rowan trees, much loved by the birds, in her memory. Linda left a bequest to Wincham- a beautiful slate trophy to be awarded for the best wildlife-friendly garden in the village.

2016 sees the first competition for the trophy.

There is no entry form – simply make some brief notes to tell us about your garden. Suggested headings for your notes are:

Shelter, Food, Water, Breeding Sites, Plants, Access, Wildlife Visitors, Successes, Future Plans

Plus of course anything else you would like to draw our attention to or are particularly proud of.

Judges will draw up a shortlist and arrange a convenient time to visit those gardens and chat to the gardeners.

If you would like to enter the competition, please email or post your entry to Naomi, our Parish Clerk (see back of newsletter) or drop it into the letterbox at 19 Kingfisher Grove. The deadline for entries is August 1st.

6 Bus Routes in Wincham

Our readers who use the buses regularly or read the Northwich Guardian may already be aware of the changes with our bus services in the last few weeks.

The GHA 45 Service Northwich to calling at Wincham stopped this route at the end of April. Network Warrington, which also operated the same route until recently, started a revised 45 service. Below is the current timetable (at time of going to press) for the Network Warrington 45.

Mon-Fri (excl. Public Holidays) Wincham to Warrington 0728 1008 1208 1408 1706 1845 Sat Wincham to Warrington 0808 1008 1208 1408 1608 1808

Mon Fri (excl. Public Holidays) Wincham to Northwich 0811 1034 1234 1434 1709 Sat Wincham to Northwich 0834 1034 1234 1434 1634

The GHA 289 Service Northwich to Altrincham remains the same.

We are urging residents who used the old 45 service and would like to re-instate it to e-mail Naomi our Parish Clerk at [email protected]. She will then forward this on to Cheshire West and Chester Council who are reviewing the routes in September.

CHECK BEFORE YOU TRAVEL.

7 By the time you’re reading this, the trail will have finished! Check out Wincham Parish Post Facebook page to find out who won. We will also publish the results in the next Wincham Word.

We had a hugely successful scarecrow making workshop at the community centre in April. It was great to see lots of children, mums and dads and grandmas getting stuck in with paper mache, stuffing scarecrows and being very creative.

The trail ran between 30th April—6th May across the village. We had fabulous entries from residents and businesses. Thank you to every entrant, you all worked very hard and all the displays look fabulous. OUR ENTRANTS

Another Cheshire Rural Touring Arts Success for Wincham

Morgan and West delivered a splendid evening of magic and comedy to a packed house at Wincham Community Centre on April 22nd. With a Victorian theme running through the performance, using dreadful jokes, immense skill and boundless energy, they performed old and new tricks which left the audience wondering how on earth they did it.

We look forward to announcing another CRTA event in due course.

10 Focus on Business: Celebrating Thirty Years ‘Out of Town’

Hairdresser Sue Turner and her family are so proud of their 30 year old business in Wincham that they’ve put up a banner to celebrate!

Sue’s hairdressing career started when, aged 15, she took on a Saturday job at Eric Longworth’s salon in . Sue started a three year apprenticeship with Eric when she left school. She married husband David , a local builder, at the age of 19 and the couple jumped at the chance of a house on Pickmere Lane when it became available.

Newly qualified Sue went into mobile hairdressing for a year or so. Her son Jason was born in 1982, followed by daughter Sarah in 1984 and son Chris in 1995. Sue says ‘When Sarah was about 3 months old, Dave was offered a good job in Oman for 6 months. He had always wanted to turn our garage into a salon so that I could be there for the children, Before the salon so when he got back, we submitted plans to the council. To be honest, I was a bit scared in case it didn’t work out!’

The business opened in February 1986 and the rest, as they say, is history. Residents have enjoyed the luxury of staying local. One of Sue’s first clients was Mrs Nancy Linskill, well-known to many in the village; Mrs Linskill still comes to the salon and makes Sue and Sarah laugh with the tales she has to tell.

Sarah now works more hours in the salon than Sue, who says ‘She’s taken over the realm! Hopefully she and the salon will still be here in another 30 years.’

Sue wants to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to clients old and new for all their support over the last 30 years.

11 How I remember Wincham as a child

Marston resident Sue Wallworth shares her memories and brings to life the Wincham Lane and Chapel Street of her childhood.

Chapter Two

The Thompsons lived where the car wash business now stands. Opposite were two cottages; Mrs Curson (I think) lived in one, then there were two more cottages where a relation to the Monroes lived. These cottages later became offices for Stubbies.

Kathleen Hayes (Johnson) and I started school at Marston at the age of four years. The only way to school was across the ‘Private’ – that was a dirt track and still is, between the building which was called Minshulls (now a dog food manufacturing place, I believe) and Stubbies. At harvest time, we would get a ride on the back of the cart bringing in the sheaves of corn – not the most comfortable of rides, but we loved the horse, which belonged to Mr Eyres of Rundle Lane. Mr Eyres also supplied the village with milk every morning; his man, Mr Dutton, would come around and ask how much milk we needed that day. We liked Dutt, as we nicknamed him.

At the main gate to Stubbies, there were three cottages; in one lived the Shaw family, and next door was the Barnes family. I forget who lived in the third cottage – no doubt someone will remind me. At the bottom of the canal bridge was a railway line; Mr and Mrs Wilkinson lived in the cottage by the gate and would open and shut the gate when the train carrying salt would be backed into a siding before going to Northwich Station. We used to take potato peelings to the Wilkinsons for their hens and get a slice of homemade cake in return.

Opposite, on the other side of the road, was a wooden building that housed three homes; the Felsteads (Burgesses), the Perrins and the Spencers lived there. The track also led to a cottage that Mr Collins lived in (Mrs Shaw’s father). His granddaughter Olwen and I sometimes took his lunch on a Sunday. Past the cottage, the path led to Rubber Lines, a Stockport company who employed local people to trim rubber soles and heels for local cobbler shops.

To be continued………….
