May 2nd, 2021 5 5th Sunday of Easter A Look at the Readings for 5th Sunday of Easter

Most people like to feel as if they are in control of their own lives. Few people enjoy the feeling that their lives are spiraling out of control, and there is nothing that they can do about it. In one way or another, the readings from Mass today all touch on that very issue and offer us a better understanding of who is in control of our lives. St. Luke in the Acts of the Apostles tells the story of Saul (later know at Saint Paul) and his tumultuous conver- sion to the Christian faith. Saul was a well educated and politically connected rabbi who had persecuted the early Church. Suddenly, he has a dramatic conversion. He initially feels his life has been so turned upside down, he has to take a three year sabbatical to make sense of his experience that it was Christ and not Saul himself who was in control. John’s First Letter, written some decades later, appears to be directed at Christians who are perhaps being vio- lently persecuted for their faith in Jesus. The early Church believed Jesus would return very soon, and when He failed to appear, they felt their life and expectations of faith were spiraling out of control. John tells them they must ground them- selves in their faith in Jesus and love one another, for only in this will they find any peace about world events. In the Gospel of John Reading, Jesus refers to himself as the vine and the Father as a vinedresser. A vinedresser is a master cultivator would tends the vine, cares for it, and makes it fruitful. If you have ever seen a vine in the dead of winter, it appears to be a lifeless twig. With proper care, such a vine can produce grapes in a few short months. Only in attaching ourselves to Christ can we understand that it is the Father and not ourselves who is truly in control of lives. Kid’s Corner
