MEDIA GUIDE Dear hockey fans! Today, probably as never before, we need your support. We really had a hard season, in which we failed to fulfill our main task – promotion to the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi. But we shouldn’t sprinkle ashes upon our heads. We need to move on, learning from mistakes and building a strong team, capable of meeting the most difficult challenges.

With all this, we are on the right way. A new young team is being formed. Great prospects are open before the young talented players, for whom the 2013 IIHF World Championship will become their first one for the national team. During the recent exhibition games they have already proved what they worth. Andrei SKABELKA Team Head Coach Our team is ready for the World Championship both physically and psychologically. We had a good training camp, during which we fulfilled everything what we had planned. And now we need to bring everything what we have learned to life and show what we are capable of. I can’t promise to win every match, but I promise that all our players will do their best to make it. GROUPS The 16 teams are divided into two groups for the Preliminary Round. On May 9-25, 2014 Minsk will host the 78th IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. The decision on holding the tournament in Minsk was taken at the IIHF Annual Congress on May 8, 2009 in Bern, Switzerland.

Among the former Soviet countries, it was Russia to host the IIHF World Championships two times (in 2000 and 2007) and Latvia (2006).

Since 1930, the Ice Hockey World Championships have been held annually (although it wasn’t held in 1940-1946 because of World War II). Before 1970 in the Olympic year World Championships were not held. The winners of the Olympic Games automatically became world champions.

In 1972 and 1976 World Championships were held separately from the Olympic Games, and in 1980, 1984, 1988 they were not held at all. To date, the hockey tournament at the Winter Olympics and the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championships are held as separate events.

LOGO Back in 2008, the Belarusian Ice Hockey Association announced a contest for the logo of the championship. About 200 applications were submitted for participation in the contest. The logo combined a hockey theme and national colors. It looks dynamic, bright and memorable. The presentation of the logo was held in March 2009.

MASCOT The World Championship already has its own mascot. This is a bison – one of the symbols of Belarus. The official mascot of the 2014 IIHF WM reflects peculiarities of the national culture and corresponds to the ice hockey game. It demonstrates strength and power and has a clear message to millions of fans and spectators all over the world. It also arouses bright and positive associations. In April 2013 the mascot was given a name as a result of the national contest «Think up a name for the mascot!» – Volat. Over 3,500 people voted online to choose it among the top-10. The name Volat, which can be translated from the Belarusian language as «a mighty man, hero», sounds almost the same in every language. So it will be easy for tourists to write and pronounce this name correctly.

VISAS In January 2012, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko signed a decree on visa-free entry to Belarus for official participants of the 2014 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship and foreign tourists for the period from April 25 till May 31, 2014. The ground for visa-free entry is the presence of original or electronic ticket to the games of the 2014 IIHF WM. Belarusian Ice Hockey Association
