The Palatine Historical Society operates out of a 143 -year -old home named the Clayson House, 224 E. Palatine Rd. The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as of March 21, 1979, and is jointly owned by the Palatine park and library districts. George Henry Clayson built the home in 1873 after purchasing the land from James Wilson in 1872. The land's boundaries ranged from Northwest Highway (then Baldwin Road) to Palatine Road (then Chicago Avenue) to Wood Street and Oak Street. Its style is known as French Second Empire, due to the Mansard roof with dormers. It also features Victorian Italianate characteristics in the bay window and brackets. A local carpenter built the home. Fruit trees and grapevines planted by Clayson dotted the lawn. After moving to Crystal Lake (then Nunda) for his nursery business, Clayson sold the house and all but 1-1/2 acres of the land to Moses Brown in 1881. Charles Cutting purchased the 1-1/2 acres. The Brown family moved into the home and lived there until 1901. They then sold the house to William Meine. Three years later, Meine transferred the property to Henry Wolff. Wolff moved in with his wife, Carrie, and his daughter,ClaysonHouse Museum Elsie. Wolff died in 1945.
