PHILCAMSAT Highlights the Filipino Seafarer’s Journey in “A Sea of Stories”

The Philippine Center for Advanced Maritime Simulation and Training (PHILCAMSAT) honors the hard work of Global Maritime Professionals (GMPs) with a four part web-docu series “ A Sea of Stories.” Featuring actor and maritime advocate Diether Ocampo, the series recognizes the crucial role of GMPs in theindustries of shipping and maritime.

Set against the world-class training facilities of PHILCAMSAT, at its state-of-the-art simulation center in Makati and its expansive maritime safety campus called The MAST in , the webisodes highlight the stringent requirements that global maritime professionals must meet to prepare them for their enormous responsibilities onboard.

“Today, more than ever, seafaring is a job that demands properly trained and qualified personnel: men and women with the professional competence to perform complicated and highly technical tasks; who have the courage, strength and determination to spend long periods of time away from home; that possess the presence of mind to accurately respond to the hazards and challenges at sea; and with the right aptitude to thrive in a challenging and multicultural environment,” said PHILCAMSAT Executive Director Pol Haboc. “This is what ‘A Sea of Stories’ showcases and this is what we wish for the greater public to understand as we feature the lives and stories of maritime professionals of various ranks and backgrounds.”

Born and raised in the seafaring province of Cavite, Diether Ocampo has had an interest in the maritime industry. His opportunity train at PHILCAMSAT allowed him to interact with both seasoned officers and novice seafarers. This experience provided him a deeper understanding and a newfound appreciation for the seafaring profession.

“I have always wondered how does one become a seafarer? How hard is it for them to be away from their families? To confront typhoons, storms and catastrophes at sea? What must they overcome to fulfill their jobs? As I entered the world of seafaring and met these admirable men and women, I started to learn just why the ’ greatest treasure is its people,” shared Mr. Ocampo. “As I experienced even just a fraction of what they go through, I realized that Filipino seafarers are very determined and extremely passionate professionals. Their dedication to their craft and their families is so unparalleled and deserving of our respect as fellow Filipinos. Discovering how they rise from the challenges that they face both in their lives and in this profession is something that I can never forget.”
