BYU COUGARS Improved ST Units in '06 and They Were #20 SPECIAL TEAMS - Mendenhall's first unit finished #100 in my ST rankings and I called for them to be one of the most BYU COUGARS improved ST units in '06 and they were #20. They were inexp in had 547 (19.5) in '06, was the team's top deep threat in '09 '07 and dropped to #60. In '08 everyone was back (#26). In '09 QB Riley Nelson (24.2) but was just #2 (556) as he missed 4 (inj). Surprisingly (#69) and in '10 the unit ret'd intact. O'Neill Chambers became Jacobson was #3 in '10 (410, 11.1). LY they had a much more BYU's all-time leader in KR yardage (1612) passing Mike Rigell exp'd unit and even added rFr Ross Apo (PS#30). The unit ('98-'01). K Mitch Payne set BYU's record for most career and lost its top 3 TE's to injury but the WR's had unusual size and consec PAT's with 162. He also passed his brother Matt for first speed for BYU. 6'4" soph Cody Hoffman led with 943 (15.5) all-time on the MW career K pts list. Payne hit 17-21 FG's (L48). and 6'3" Apo was #2 with 453 (13.3). Not listed below are WR's LY they ret'd P Riley Stephenson and he avg'd 42.2 (37.0 net). Mitch Mathews (6'6" 215 rFr, PS#92), Dalin Tollestrup (6'1" Justin Sorensen (PS#1) had 17 TB on 67 KO and hit 15-25 FG's (3 182 Sr), Rhen Brown (5'10" 178 Sr) and TE's Mike Edmunds miss 50+). BYU moved from #43 to #33. KR Cody Hoffman (27.1 (6'4" 215 Fr, PS#181), Devin Mahina (6'6" 245 So, PS#32) and in '10) reset Chambers' record avg 24.4 incl a 93 yd KR td vs UCF Kaneakua Friel (6'5" 244 Jr, PS#97) who made 1 st LY. TY (1st here in 13Y). With everyone back, they could improve. they only lose Jacobson (9 st, 323, 12.9) and I really like the COACHES - Bronco Mendenhall was the DC under Rocky size/speed combination of Hoffman and Apo. Long at New Mex for 5Y prior to coming here in '03 as the DC. OFFENSIVE LINE - In '09 BYU's lone ret st'r, Matt The Cougars went 6-6 in his 1st yr as HC ('05) but have gone Reynolds, fractured his hand in Aug. POSITION OUTLOOK FOR 2012 4.2, 3.7% sks). This year they lose Reynolds (13 st, UFA CAR, TE McCoy Hill 6'5" 230 M LB Matt Shirley 6'5" 230 So ALSO ON ROSTER: TE Colby Jorgensen 6'7" 234 rFr M LB Riley Bushman 6'1" 220 So QUARTERBACKS - When I think of BYU I think of great schl record 52 consec sts), C Terence Brown (13 st, 3Y st'r) RB Paul Lasike 6'0" 225 So C Brad Wilcox 6'7" 265 Fr LB Connell Hess 6'0" 224 Sr QB's.
