SPECIAL TEAMS - Mendenhall's first unit finished #100 in my ST rankings and I called for them to be one of the most BYU COUGARS improved ST units in '06 and they were #20. They were inexp in had 547 (19.5) in '06, was the team's top deep threat in '09 '07 and dropped to #60. In '08 everyone was back (#26). In '09 QB Riley Nelson (24.2) but was just #2 (556) as he missed 4 (inj). Surprisingly (#69) and in '10 the unit ret'd intact. O'Neill Chambers became Jacobson was #3 in '10 (410, 11.1). LY they had a much more BYU's all-time leader in KR yardage (1612) passing Mike Rigell exp'd unit and even added rFr Ross Apo (PS#30). The unit ('98-'01). K Mitch Payne set BYU's record for most career and lost its top 3 TE's to injury but the WR's had unusual size and consec PAT's with 162. He also passed his brother Matt for first speed for BYU. 6'4" soph Cody Hoffman led with 943 (15.5) all-time on the MW career K pts list. Payne hit 17-21 FG's (L48). and 6'3" Apo was #2 with 453 (13.3). Not listed below are WR's LY they ret'd P Riley Stephenson and he avg'd 42.2 (37.0 net). BYU moved from #43 to #33. KR Cody Hoffman (27.1 (6'4" 215 Fr, PS#181), Devin Mahina (6'6" 245 So, PS#32) and in '10) reset Chambers' record avg 24.4 incl a 93 yd KR td vs UCF Kaneakua Friel (6'5" 244 Jr, PS#97) who made 1 st LY. TY (1st here in 13Y). With everyone back, they could improve. they only lose Jacobson (9 st, 323, 12.9) and I really like the COACHES - Bronco Mendenhall was the DC under Rocky size/speed combination of Hoffman and Apo. Long at New Mex for 5Y prior to coming here in '03 as the DC. OFFENSIVE LINE - In '09 BYU's lone ret st'r, Matt The Cougars went 6-6 in his 1st yr as HC ('05) but have gone Reynolds, fractured his hand in Aug. Surprisingly the young 60-18 since incl three 11 win seasons. QB cch Brandon Doman O-line (23 car sts, #117 FBS) opened holes for 146 ypg rush (8th yr here) took over as OC in Jan '11. POSITION OUTLOOK FOR 2012 4.2, 3.7% sks). This year they lose Reynolds (13 st, UFA CAR, TE McCoy Hill 6'5" 230 M LB Matt Shirley 6'5" 230 So ALSO ON ROSTER: TE Colby Jorgensen 6'7" 234 rFr M LB Riley Bushman 6'1" 220 So QUARTERBACKS - When I think of BYU I think of great schl record 52 consec sts), C Terence Brown (13 st, 3Y st'r) RB Paul Lasike 6'0" 225 So C Brad Wilcox 6'7" 265 Fr LB Connell Hess 6'0" 224 Sr QB's. Ariz St transfer Max Hall (PS#52) left in '09 as the MW and LG Marco Thorson (3 st). The OL was decimated in spg as RB Levi Te'o 5'9" 190 Fr OL Terrance Motley 6'3" 280 rFr LB Seth Probert 6'3" 207 So career pass leader and his 32 wins topped Ty Detmer. Riley RB Brett Heldt 5-11 216 Fr OL Solomone Kafu 6'2" 314 So LB Uani 'Unga 6'1" 219 Jr they had 9 players on the injury report. They go from 107 car RB Colby Hansen 5'11" 195 M OL Mason Payne 6'6" 315 Fr LB Lene Lesatele 6'1" 243 M Nelson (PS#65) is not your prototypical BYU QB as he is an sts to 77 but should come close to LY's numbers. FB Nate Carter 5'9" 192 rFr OL Corbin Kaufusi 6'8" 255 M LB Creed RIchardson 6'1" 205 M undersized running QB who lacks a powerful arm. He started DEFENSIVE LINE WR Jordan Smith 6'4" 207 Jr DL Mason Higham 6'4" 246 rFr DB Blake Morgan 5'11" 189 Jr - In '09 BYU ret'd almost the entire 2 WR John Lamont 5'9" 180 Fr DL Ray Forrester 5'11" 255 Jr DB Chase Pendley 6'1" 204 Jr 7 at Utah St in '06 (925, 55%, 6-7) sparking what was then a deep and improved to 110 ypg rush (3.4). In '10 they had to WR Kurt Henderson 6'2" 190 rFr DL Thomas Bryson 6'5" 235 Jr DB Ryan Comer 6'1" 205 So moribund offense. Heaps (1-6 ratio after 7 gms) had a 14-3 ratio over added USC transfer PS#5JC Hebron Fangupo (330 lbs). DE LB Tanner Cox 6'3" 225 So the final 6. Heaps threw the lowest total (2316, 57%, 15-9) for Matt Putnam was not cleared until late so they had basically 2 a BYU passing leader since Matt Berry in '03 but still set every PHIL’S FORECAST st'rs lost but still improved to 112 ypg (3.7) with 24 sks. TY they When Gary Crowton took over in '01, it was a dream yr as BYU BYU frosh passing record and was the clear-cut starter heading lose 2nd Tm Ind Fangupo (10 st, 26 tkl, 6 tfl), DE Putnam (6 into '11. After losing their bowl, BYU finished 12-2 (#25). BYU comeback win vs USU and the job was his. Nelson suffered (12 tkl, MSN). They ret 2 st'rs plus get back Russell Tialavea then had 3 consec losing yrs! Bronco Mendenhall took over in a partially collapsed lung in the 1Q vs Idaho and Heaps led (PS#51, 26 st '06-'09) and Ian Dulan (17 st '06-'08). They also '05 and they went 6-6. In '09 they knocked off #3 Okla prior to the bowl and Nelson finished with 1,717 (57.4%, 19-7). improvement despite losing a top-notch DL. (1st win vs top 10 s/'90) and moved as high as #7 but lost to Backing up Nelson (8-1 as st'r LY) are James Lark (PS#58, 4-9 LINEBACKERS - In '10 BYU had just 10 car sts ret (Jordan Fla St and #10 TCU and landed in their 5th consec Las Vegas pass 2 yr), Taysom Hill (6'2" 210 Fr, PS#26, orig Stan) who ret'd Pendleton). Mendenhall thought BYU was better vs mobile QB's Bowl. In '10 BYU lost RB Unga over the summer and alternated from a mission and was IFS, Jason Munns (PS#23) and Alex due to depth at OLB. Pendleton was OFY after 5 sts but surpris- QB's every other series. BYU started 1-4 (15 ppg off) but finished Kuresa (5'11" 180 rFr, PS#68).
