“She was naturally quiet and reserved, and she was not at her peak condition- ing,’’ MacGillivray said. “No one on the team was, so that was a big advantage for her.”

As a freshman, Spruill started nine games, but her coach didn’t see the competitiveness he wanted. “If she made a shot or two, she stayed in.”

“The first game, I was really, really nervous,’’ Spruill said of her freshman year, back on the court after miss- ing so much time after her second knee injury. “These girls are all bigger. Everyone is a lot more aggressive. I was just real tentative in games and in practice.”

And her perseverance (as According to MacGillivray, when well as her athletic ability, of course) got her to where she is now.

When Spruill was in her sophomore season at the Western School of Technology and Environmental Science in Maryland, she tore her right ACL during her AAU season.

“The recovery took nine months, I believe,” said Spruill. “And that was because it was my first one and I was trying to make sure everything was for sure okay when I went back.”

Fast forward two years to her senior season and Spruill found herself under the knife once again.
