Charles T. Rorrer was killed by a train on a railroad trestle in Kyle, WV. Two trains were running almost side by side, and as he crossed in front of one he stepped into the path of the second one, fatally injuring him. He died about 2 weeks later. He was employed by Baldwin Felts Detective Agency. After Charles T.'s death Alice married Joel T. Bates.

3 The Daily Bulletin, Martinsville, VA GenerationFriday April 24,2 (con't) 1936 The remains of Lee Rorrer, who died in West Virginia, were brought back here to his home county and buried at the cemetery near Goodwill Church in Patrick County, VA , Foley Rorrer Cemetery,on April 15. He was placed beside his wife who died several years ago. He, with his family, formerly lived here before moving to Spray some 20 years ago. He had spent the past two years with his daughter, Mrs. Minnie Rorrer Thore, in West Virginia.
Notes for Sarah Ann Bryant: Mrs. Sally Anne Rorer,wife of Lee Rorer,died at her home in Spray, NC, on February 20, 1930 after a short illness of pneumonia, and her remains were brought here on Friday and funeral services were held at Goodwill Church of the Brethren, of which the deceased was a faithful member, and burial was in the church cemetery. She is survived by her aged husband and two daughters, Mrs. Bettie Hopkins of Greensboro, NC, and Mrs. Minnie Thore of West Virginia, and one son, Taylor J. Rorer, of this place; one daughter, Mrs. Minnie Foley, having preceded her in death a good many years ago. A large number of friends and relatives from Spray attended, also a large number from this community were in attendance as a last respect to one who formerly lived here.

Notes for Posey Wilson Rorer: Posey was a musician and played the fiddle with Charlie Poole and the North Carolina Ramblers. They made a number of recordings that were sold nationally. A complete story of this band is written by Kinney Rorrer, called the" Rambling Blues, The Life and Songs of Charlie Poole", published by McCain Printing Company, Inc, Danville, VA. Posey was afflicted from birth with club feet. The Posey Rorer Edison Recordings, Including the rejected ones are not only not "not so good" they are stunning and obviously ahead of their time for not only Edison, but for the entire country in the 1920s. They are not "ancestors" of bluegrass, they are bluegrass music, which part of the your description don't they fit?- An Article about Posey Rorer by Kinney Rorrer Posey Rorer was born badly club-footed which may well have influenced him to take up fiddle as a youngster. Born in the hills of Franklin County, Virginia in 1891, his crippled feet would not allow him to run and play with older siblings. Posey's father, Wilson Taylor Rorer, played old time banjo a little and no doubt fired his son's desire to play string music. Posey made his first fiddle out of a wooden cigar box and began playing with his cousin and neighbor, Bob Moore, an old time banjo player. The two would often play dance music in the one room log cabin where the Rorer family lived. During World War I, Posey took a job working as a trapper in the coal mines of Big Stick, WV. It was there where he encountered the free-spirited Charlie Poole. The two became brothers-in-law in 1920 when Poole married Posey's older sister, Lou Emma. In the early 1920's Posey was freed from his club feet by surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital. The surgery was paid for with money made from a run of moonshine whiskey. Rorer began playing more dances and shows with his brother-in-law. Rorer and Poole, along with guitarist Norman Woodlieff, went to New York City in 1925 on their own initiative to try to record. Their recordings, released as "Charlie Poole with the North Carolins Ramblers", were smash hits. Rore's reputation as a smooth mountain fiddler led other musicians to seek him out as a back-up

Between March of 1927 and February of 1928 Posey fiddled his way through six different recording sessions for Victor, Columbia, Gannett, Paramount, and Brunswick Record Companies. Posey accompanied Kelly Harrell, Roy Harvey, Bob Hoke, and of course Charlie Poole. Early in 1928 Rorer and Poole split. Posey went on to record with two Stokes County, North Carolina singers: Matt Simmons and Frank Miller. In the years 1929 and 1930 Posey recorded with Walter "Kid" Smith for Gennett, Columbia, and American Record Companies. The records were issued by "Smith and Woodlieff. The "Carolina Buddies" and "The Dixie Ramblers".. A few weeks after Poole's death, in Spring 1931, Rorer entered the recording studios for the last time. Posey along wth Buster Carter and guitarist Preston Young, cut ten sides for Columbia including the very first recording of "I'll Roll in My Sweet Baby's Arms". Rorer followed Poole in death five years later, at age 44. He was found dead in the Spray, North Carolina park where he and Poole had so often played together in happier times. Rorer left a fine legacy of traditional fiddle tunes, still revered to this day by fans of old-time music. .

She was the retired church secretary of Ghent United Methodist Church after 19 years of service. Born in Graham, Va., she was the daughter of the late Ella Ellis Quillin and Byrum Franklin Quillin. She was a member of Ghent United Methodist Church, and had been a member of the A.B. Clarke Sunday School Class. She was a member of Job's Daughters, Bethel No. 3; the Tidewater Twirlers; Ocean View Chapter No. 34, Order of the Eastern Star; and Susannah Wesley Circle of Ghent United Methodist Church. Notes for Mary Kathryn Hazelwood: Mary Kathryn "Kathy" Rorrer Eden, NC- Mary Kathryn " Kathy" Rorrer , 57, of 168 Glenridge Drive, died Thursday evening, Septembet 27, 2007, at her home. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Hickory Grove United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Rorrer was born March 4, 1950, in Rockingham County, NC, to the late Eddie Sanford and Mary Marion Martin Hazelwood. She was amember and choir director of Hickory Grove United methodist Church and donated much of her time to various charitable organizations. Mrs,. Rorrer had a varied musical career that included gospel, bluegrass and blues. She performed and toured England and Scotland, among other places, and performed at the Smithsonian Folk Life Festival in Washington, D.C., among other places. Kathy graduated from Greensboro College, and has worked in the banking business for over 25 tears. Most recently, she was employed as the financial center manager for Wachovia Bank in Eden. Surviving are her husband, Doug Rorrer of the home; daughter, Melissa Rorrer of Wilmington; son, Taylor Rorrer of Collowhee; brother, David Hazelwood and wife Sue of Lexington; special friend, Connie Januesheske of Ladson, SC; nephew, John Hazelwood of Eden; nieces, Kim White of Greensboro, Ginny Coykendall of Greensville, SC, and katie Rorrer of Eugene, Oregon. My dad (Kinney Rorrer) claims that I have been singing Poole lyrics since the age of three. As a child, I was lucky enough to meet several of the people in this book, the most memorable of whom was Lonnie Austin. I was always at how he could seemingly bang his fingers against the piano keys and make beautiful music. I also spent many a Southern night playing in the back yard while dad played Poole tunes on the banjo outside. As an adult, I have been lucky to be an audience member at many of my dad's performances, the highlight of which was the Alaskan Folk Festival, held in Juneau in 1997. It was fantastic to see him perform with my uncle Doug Rorrer and Kirk Sutphin, with Kirk's wife Lisa providing clogging entertainment. When I sat in his Charlie Poole workshop that year in Juneau, I realized what a fascinating man Charlie was. I remember countless times in restaurants, stores, and churches when we had to wait for dad while people told him a "Charlie Poole" story_ all of them funny. A native of Patrick County, he was born on May 18, 1949, a son of Madison McCoy "Coy" Foley, deceased and Pauline F. Foley. In addition to his mother of Stuart, surviving are a daughter, Crystal Dillon, of Stuart; one brother, Anthony Foley, of Stuart; one sister, Anita Foley, of Stuart; and five nieces. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Stuart with the Rev. Dan Schelling officiating. Burial will follow in the Rorrer and Foley family cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today.
