Great Northern Christmas Privacy Notice

Your trust is very important to us. This means the BBC is committed to protecting the privacy and security of your personal data. It is important that you read this notice so that you are aware of how and why we are using such information. This privacy notice describes how we collect and use personal data about you during and after your relationship with us, in accordance with data protection law.

Why are we doing this and how can you participate? Great Northern Christmas is an exciting new project that the local BBC , BBC Philharmonic and CBBC are launching across Northern .

You are invited to be part of a special programme to be broadcast on ten local BBC radio stations on Christmas Day. These are BBC Radio Manchester, BBC Radio Lancashire, BBC Radio Merseyside, BBC Radio , BBC Radio Leeds, BBC Radio York, BBC Radio , BBC Radio Tees, BBC Radio Cumbria, BBC Radio Newcastle. Two of the tracks that will be used during the programme will be made by you, our audiences, at home!

To participate, send us a short video of you and your family either signing along to Winter Wonderland to form part of the Great Northern virtual choir, or playing (or banging!) any instrument (or home furniture!) as part of Frosty The Snowman to form Owain’s Great Northern virtual band.

We will use our favourite submissions to compose two tracks that will be used as part of broadcast content, including on social media. The audio will be mixed to create a radio programme with some video used on social media accounts to promote the show.

What will BBC collect and how will we use it? The BBC will collect and process the personal data that you have provided to us about yourself and your child:  Your name  Your email address  Your age  Your location (area)  If you are under 16 years of age, the name and contact details for your parents/guardians  The video upload of you and/or your household and/or your bubble

Who is the Data Controller? The BBC is the “data controller” of your personal data. This means that the BBC decides what your and your child’s personal data is used for, and the ways in which it is processed. For the avoidance of doubt, your and your family’s personal data will be collected and processed solely for the purposes set out in this privacy notice. As the data controller, the BBC has the responsibility to comply, and to demonstrate compliance with, data protection law.

Lawful basis for processing your personal data The legal basis on which the BBC processes your and your family’s personal data is the performance of its public task. The BBC’s role is to act in the public interest and to serve all audiences with content which informs, educates and entertains.

Any special category data, such as racial or ethnic background information or disability information that is evident from any audio-visual imagery and contributions provided, will be processed on the basis of the BBC’s substantial public interest in producing broadcast content.

Who do we share your information with? The BBC upload tool for submitting your entries and video contributions is hosted internally within BBC systems.

We will not share your data or contributions with any other third parties without your consent, unless required by law to do so.

Retaining your information We hope to use your video as part of the Great Northern Christmas programmes, but we can’t guarantee it.

The BBC will retain your information and your video recording for the duration of the Great Northern Christmas production. If your contribution is not selected to be used as part of the production, it will be deleted at this time. If you would like us to delete your data before then, please contact England.digital@.co.uk.

Content which is broadcast / published will be held in archive for 7 years. Broadcast material, such as videos, your voice recordings are retained in the BBC Archives for historical record purposes.
