GAME 1 - April 11 (Calgary 4, Colorado 0 at Scotiabank Saddledome) Mike Smith stopped all 26 shots and the Flames scored two power-play goals to take Game 1 of their first-round series against the Avalanche by a 4-0 final on Thursday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome. Matthew Tkachuk scored one of those power-play goals and added an empty netter, and Andrew Mangiapane and Mikael Backlund had the other goals for Calgary. Philipp Grubauer made 28 saves for Colorado.

GAME 2 - April 13 (Colorado 3, Calgary 2 in OT at Scotiabank Saddledome) J.T. Compher tied the contest with 2:39 remaining in regulation and Nathan MacKinnon scored at 8:27 of as the Avalanche won 3-2 to even their first round series with the Flames at a game apiece. Matt Nieto scored a shorthanded goal for the Avs, and Philipp Grubauer made 35 saves. Compher's goal came with Grubauer off for the extra attacker.

SERIES SHIFTS TO DENVER FOR GAME 3 Tied at one game apiece, the series now shifts to Denver where the Avalanche hosts the Calgary Flames in Game 3 tonight at Pepsi Center. Calgary won the first contest 4-0 on Thursday and the Avs won the second 3-2 in overtime on Saturday. These teams will face off again here on Wednesday night. The Avs are making back-to-back appearances in the for the first time since earning 11 straight trips from 1994-95 to 2005-06.

MAKAR SIGNS ELC The Avalanche yesterday signed defenseman Cale Makar to a three-year, entry level contract. Makar, 20, just completed his sophomore season at the University of Massachusetts, helping the Minutemen reach the NCAA Frozen Four Championship Game. The Calgary, Alberta, native was named the winner of the 2019 Hobey Baker Award, becoming the first player in school history to win college hockey’s top individual prize. Selected by Colorado in the first round (fourth overall) of the 2017 NHL Draft, Makar was voted the Player of the Year by unanimous selection and was named an AHCA First Team (East) All-American. He led Hockey East and ranked first nationally among all NCAA defensemen with 49 points (16g/33a) in 41 games.

POSTSEASON EXPERIENCE The Avalanche did not have a single player make his postseason debut in Games 1 or 2, as all 19 players had appeared in at least one playoff contest before this year. EAGLES PLAYOFF BOUND The Colorado Eagles (AHL) clinched a spot in the 2019 Calder Cup Playoffs on the final day of the season on Saturday, advancing with a 3-2 victory over San Jose coupled with a Tucson regulation loss. The Eagles (fourth in Pacific Division) will face Bakersfield (first in Pacific) in the best-of-five, first round series starting Friday in Loveland.

POSTSEASON PRODUCTION Nathan MacKinnon has 17 points (6g/11a) in 15 career playoff games, tied with for the third-highest points-per-game average (1.13) among active players. Only David Pastrnak (1.25) and Leon Draisaitl (1.23) average more. Only two players in franchise history has averaged more points-per-game in the playoffs, Hall-of-Famers Peter Stastny (1.27) and Peter Forsberg (1.14).

8-0-2 RUN PROPELS AVS TO POSTSEASON The Avalanche woke up on the morning of St. Patrick’s Day with 72 points, six points out of the second wild card spot (seven including the tiebreaker) and had to jump three different teams, (78), Minnesota (76) and Chicago (73). The Avs responded with a league-best 8-0-2 record (.900) in their next 10 contests, gaining 18 out of a possible 20 points in 19 days to earn their second straight playoff berth.

SEASON NOTABLES • Colorado finished 10th in the NHL with 258 goals, the club’s highest total since 2006-07 (267). • This was just the second Avalanche team to feature three 30-goal scorers, as the 1995-96 club had four (Joe Sakic 51, Claude Lemieux 39, Valeri Kamensky 38, Peter Forsberg 30). • Colorado’s power-play unit finished seventh in the NHL at 22.0% (63-286), the club’s second straight top-10 finish after ranking eighth last year (22.0%, 65-296). HERE I SAM: Flames forward, Sam Bennett notched his first career multi-point and multi-assist game with his two assist on outing on Saturday. REAL-TIME RASMUS: Flames rookie defenceman, Rasmus Andersson scored his first career playoff goal on Saturday.
