Dear Sew Abbey, What should I look for in a sewing ma- chine? Confused. A. Dear Confused, A quality has the potential to save you time and money by repairing and constructing clothing, making gifts and creating one of kind home decorating items. You want a number of features that will allow it to work at maximum capability. Here are a number of tips we have for you.  Buy from a dealership, not a big chain store or online. When you buy from a dealer you are getting assistance, experience, advice and owner’s classes which will guide you through the features of your machine. They will service the machines and have a war- ranty guarantee. A big chain store or online service cannot help you with a problem and the local fabric stores may not be conducive to helping you with a problem when you have not bought the machine from them. Also, ask about the trade-in policy. Here at Husqvarna Viking your machine retains its full value for 1 year.  Sit down and sew on the machine. How smoothly does it run? How easy is the but- tonhole. What are the options available. Can you change the needle position? Is there a stitch length and a stitch width? Is it easy to use?  Get the best machine you can for what you can spend. This is an investment. Too often, people will get an inexpensive machine because they are not sure how much they will sew. You will become frustrated with the machine and stop sewing. This is true for teenagers!  Get a machine that you can grow into, but not so big you will feel intimidated by it. Remember, you will be getting guide classes on your machine. The staff should be able to answer any questions you have.  Look for a store that you are comfortable in. You are, in an essence, “buying the staff,” their help and their knowledge. What features on the machine should you be looking for? Everyone has their favorites. Here are some features to look for • Needle Down—the needle will stop in the down position when you stop stitching. This allows the sewer lift the presser foot when turning a corner in the fabric, without creating a jump in the stitch. • An Automatic — This is a hook and spring operation that forces a loop of into the hole of the needle/ • A One-Step Buttonholer– A one-step buttonholer creates perfect at the press of a . With the Husqvarna Viking exclusive sensor foot, you will have a perfect buttonhole every time! • Free Arm—The free arm allows you to stitch small circular areas , such as pant hems, cuffs, collars and armholes. It provides versatility to sew various clothing styles. • Self Oiling—A self oiling machine uses sintered bearings. The bearings consist of pressed metal powder whose pores are impregnated with a lubricant. The impregnating oil or fluid ensures permanent lubrication of the bearings. The more you use your ma- chine, the better it is. The machines do need to be cleaned regularly and serviced yearly by a technician. We hope this helps you in the search for your favorite sewing machine.
