Crawford, Fussell, Bowman, Pope, Jordan, Luebke, Michaux, and Miller. –––––––––––––––––––- Referred to: Rules, Appointments and Calendar. –––––––––––––––––––- April 17, 1991 1 A JOINT RESOLUTION HONORING DUKE UNIVERSITY ON WINNING THE 2 NCAA DIVISION I MEN'S BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP. 3 Whereas, the student athletes on Duke University men's basketball team won 4 the 1991 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Championship by 5 defeating the University of Kansas with a score of 72-65; and 6 Whereas, this is the first national basketball title for Duke University; and 7 Whereas, Duke University holds an impressive record of 44 wins in 16 trips 8 to the NCAA Tournament; and 9 Whereas, Duke University has been to the Final Four nine times, making five 10 appearances in the last six years; and 11 Whereas, Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski is only the second coach in history 12 to take a team to four consecutive appearances in the Final Four and has the highest 13 winning percentage for active coaches in NCAA Tournament games with a record of 14 27-7; and 15 Whereas, these extraordinary accomplishments have brought great honor and 16 distinction to our State and deserve recognition; and 17 Whereas, the Championship reflects favorably on the outstanding athletic 18 program nurtured under the leadership of the late Edward (Eddie) Cameron, long-time 19 Duke Coach and athletic director for whom Cameron Indoor Stadium is named; 20 Now, therefore, be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring: 21 Section 1. The General Assembly expresses the extreme appreciation and 22 admiration of the people of North Carolina to Duke University men's basketball team GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF NORTH CAROLINA 1991 1 for winning the 1991 National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I 2 Championship. 3 Sec. 2. The General Assembly recognizes the achievements of head coach, 4 Mike Krzyzewski; assistant coaches, Mike Brey, Tommy Amaker, Pete Gaudet, and Jay 5 Bilas; team members, Christian Ast, Kenny Blakeney, Clay Buckley, Marty Clark, 6 Brian Davis, Grant Hill, Thomas Hill, Bobby Hurley, Greg Koubek, Christian Laettner, 7 Antonio Lang, Bill McCaffrey, and Crawford Palmer; trainer, Max Crowder; and senior 8 managers, Ivan Jones and Peter Lowder. 9 Sec. 3. The Secretary of State shall send certified copies of this resolution to 10 Duke University President H. Keith H. Brodie, Athletic Director Tom Butters, and all of 11 the individuals honored in this resolution. 12 Sec. 4. This resolution is effective upon ratification. Blue Devils stalk Jayhawks for NCAA title, 72-65 By MARK JAFFE INDIANAPOLIS — For the first time in its history, the men's basketball team captured an NCAA Championship. The Blue Devils used a 17-7 run early in the second half to pull away from Kansas and fought off a furious late-game assault by the Jayhawks to win, 72-65, Monday night at the Hoosier Dome. "I'm so happy for our guys," said head coach Mike Krzyzewski. "I'm not sure if anyone's ever played harder for 80 minutes to win a national title." The Blue Devils (32-7) had fallen short ofthe championship in eight previous trips to the Final Four, including four ofthe last five years. But in 1991 Duke would not be denied. "I feel good but [not winning the title] has never been a monkey on my back," Krzyzewski said. "Did you see the players' faces? I looked at my three daughters and saw them crying. I'm just so happy." Christian Laettner, the most outstand ing player ofthe tournament, had his first double-double—18 points and 10 rebounds — in 12 games to lead Duke. "I'm just very happy about [most out standing player honors]," Laettner said. "But there are more things I'm more happy about — a national championship, a big trophy for coach to bring back to Duke.
