President’s Message Hi Everyone, It is now April! Wow! At the time of this writing, I am busy getting ready for the Grand Prix of Long Beach . The Grand Prix is celebrating its 45th year and the Long Beach MG Club has been a part of it since the beginning, that is a great accomplishment . There are a few members that have been involved in every race since the very first race in the streets of Long Beach: Dennis Connor, Bob & Barbara Funk, Iler Ganz, Marilyn Gettys, Lois & Rick Gettys, Bea Nickerson & Ernie Prokopovych . Now that is a great accomplishment . Good going everyone! Last month I asked for people to send in a short (or long) story about how they found the MG Club. The first article is from Rick Gettys, my Dad! (See his article on the next page .) Now, I WANT YOU to send and article to the Editor! (Me) So that we can see how you began in the Long Beach MG Club . I know you all have a story . Even if you were born into the club, how did you start getting involved? What is your favorite part of the club, the Rallyes, the Racing, the Socialization . . . We want you to share! Other than the Long Beach Grand Prix and our meetings April is a pretty quiet month . But the racing starts up again in May . We also have the HB Concours in early June, which kicks off our Summer . Hope to see you soon!

How I Found the LBMG Club Richard Gettys (Rick) Entry into LBMG 1960

In September 1959 a group of 4 of us decided to go to the Los Angeles Times Grand Prix for sports cars at Riverside Raceway . This race stayed known, for many, many years as the Los Angeles Times Grand Prix . As we wandered around the race track watching the racing activities we noticed one activity that occurred between each of the preliminary races . Between each race an MG would drive, on the track, between corners towing a chariot, with a funny shape, filled with a group of guys dressed all in white . Pants, shirts, and shoes . We all had a marvelous time at the race, I believe it was won by Phil Hill in a Ferrari GT . On the way home we talked about the cars towing the workers, (we found out later it was the LBMG Flagging Team) . They seemed to be having a good time and were obviously part of the racing activities . We wanted to get involved . One of our group volunteered to find out who they were and how we could get involved. Early in 1960 we found out that the flag men were with the Long Beach MG Club. We decided to go to one of their meetings and find out what else they did. (I won’t tell you who my friends were, they might want to write their own stories!) We joined the LBMG in 1960, at the small Recreation Park clubhouse and became involved in the membership, as I recall was 400 to 500. Our first race was at Santa Barbara, on the Goleta airport runways . My first assignment on the flag team was to work the last corner before the start/finish line. My last memory was of the A/B production race and my mentor/trainer was Paul Russell. After a few laps all h*** broke loose, coming at us, spinning out of control was a Cobra, we started running, running right into an out of control Corvette . Since I am writing this article, we survived and Paul Russell really enjoyed it!!!! After the Saturday was finally over, I decided that flagging was not my cup a tea so I went over to the scoring trailer . There I met Jack and Dawn Duncan and asked them if I could please help in their activities . After the first race at Santa Barbara I became involved in Timing and Scoring and have enjoyed all of the years, and all of the venues we have been to .

TIME BANDITS COMES OF AGE As you may remember TIME BANDITS, in 2018 ran for the 20th time . So that follows that in 2019 was 21 . That meant that this year TIME BANDITS could gamble . . Thus we put seven cars out on the road to have an interesting drive . We decided that this year we would give the navigators a break and eliminate some of the speed changes . This route was originally run in 2009,with a great deal more speed changes . We wondered if that was a good idea, as it turned out both drivers and navigators found that they really enjoyed the event . So we may have to consider the same format next year . The weather turned out to be absolutely fabulous which made it even more fun, with all the rain that we have had we were very pleased . We were in hopes of a desert in bloom, and there were many flowers, but not as many as there were other areas of the desert . At any rate we started out going along the freeway, (you can't avoid them if you want to get you out of town) to 138 and out to back side of Hesperia toward Lucern Valley, on to 29 Palm, and on to Amboy Rd. to I 40 to Goffs Rd. to I 95 enter Nevada for the final leg on 163 to Laughlin. The group pulled into a rest area that we have used for the last few years, where we scored control cards and awarded trophies . We are investigating a possible new route for next year . We will keep you posted . We hope to see more of you next year .

Long Beach Grand Prix Track History From GPLB.com Although the City of Long Beach had no way of knowing, when Friday morning, March 26, 1977 dawned, the city would never be the same again . An auto racing fan-turned-travel-agent — Chris Pook — was about to put the city on the international sports map and spark a business, travel and financial renaissance that continues today. Barely 18 months earlier, Pook had beaten all the odds and naysayers by staging the first Long Beach Grand Prix, a race won by that attracted more than 46,000 race fans and curiosity seekers . He followed that only six months later by staging a race, won by Switzerland’s , that was a moderate success . Now, at 4:30 a.m., it was financial crunch time. With a pack of creditors snapping at his heels, Pook desperately needed a high-profile F1 race that would be watched by countless millions worldwide and – he hoped – packed grandstands in Long Beach . He got it . With some help from a tough, diminutive Italian-American from Nazareth, PA . avoided a first-lap, multi-car collision, then went on to outduel F1 stars Jody Scheckter and to become the first American to win a Formula 1 race in a U.S. Grand Prix . “Mario’s victory really changed the whole image of the race,” says Jim Michaelian, now the President and CEO of the Grand Prix Association of Long Beach and the race’s financial officer in 1978 . “We made the New York Times, Sports Illustrated and the race was all over the local and national news ”. For the next six years, a decidedly international ambience settled over the city each Spring . Romantic car marques like Ferrari, Renault and shared headlines with equally romantic, internationally famous drivers like Jacques Laffite, and . Argentina’s won flag-to-flag in his Ferrari in 1978, just evading a now- classic first-lap shunt involving James Hunt that remains perhaps the Grand Prix’s most enduring image . Canada’s – a crowd favorite for his hard-charging style – led a Ferrari one-two finish in 1979 and, in 1980, Brazil’s Nelson Piquet’s Parmalat Brabham scored another flag-to-flag victory in the first Grand Prix that was title-sponsored by . The racehad begun a 39-year run as the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach . In 1981, F/One champion Alan Jones led an Albilad Williams FW07B one-two finish in a race notable because, for the first time, two American drivers, Mario Andrettti (fourth) and (fifth) had scored F1 points in the same race. Marlboro McLaren scored the next two wins, with Niki Lauda in 1982 and John Watson – coming from an improbable 22nd place on the starting grid – in 1983 . And, all the while, change had been coming to Long Beach . Downtown, the porn movie houses and boarded-up building were being replaced by office buildings, restaurants and gleaming new hotels . And, for Chris Pook, it was Financial Crunch Time II .

Long Beach Grand Prix Track History Continued: In 1983, faced with increasing F1 purses, sanctions and shipping charges, Pook was approached by Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART), and signed an agreement for the Champ Cars to make their Long Beach debut in 1984 . Once again, Mario Andretti rode to the rescue . “We weren’t exactly sure if the Champ Cars would have the same mystique for race fans,” said Michaelian . “But we didn’t miss a beat ”. Thanks to Mario, who put his Budweiser- Haas Lola under the checkered flag…and again put the race back into headlines around the country . American names dominated the streets of Long Beach in the 1980s and 1990s . Jr . was the victor here six times, including a remarkable four straight from 1988-91 . Mario Andretti visited Victory Circle four times (three of those with CART) and his son, Michael, is a two-time winner . California’s won the race in 1996 . Still, the race has always managed to retained a little of its original international flavor. Italy’s , one of the race’s biggest fan favorites, won back to back in 1997-98 . Colombia’s Juan Montoya, now racing IMSA prototypes for Acura , in 1999 became the first rookie to win the race before joining the Formula One wars, and Brazil’s Helio Castroneves led an all-Brazil 1-2-3 finish in 2001. And, Canada’s is a four-time winner here: 1993, 2000, 2003 and 2004 . France’s Sebastien Bourdais won three consecutive Long Beach races from 2005 to 2007 . In June 2005, race team owners and purchased the Grand Prix Association of Long Beach, ensuring that the famed seaside circuit would continue operating . On April 20, 2008, the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach staged the final race in Champ Car’s long and storied history, with Australia’s taking the checkered flag. In May 2008, the Grand Prix Association of Long Beach signed a long-term agreement to run the IndyCar Series beginning in 2009 . won the inaugural IndyCar event before a packed house, ensuring the race’s success in the new era . Ryan Hunter-Reay was the first American to win the race since in 2002 with his 2010 win. In 2013, another first happened – Japan’s took the checkers, becoming the first Japanese driver to win – and be on the podium – in the race’s long history . In 2015, in his ninth try, three-time series champion finally won his first in Long Beach! That began a streak of four consecutive first-time winners, which included France’s (2016), Canada’s (2017) and America’s (2018) . On Feb . 5, 2019, the Grand Prix Association entered into a multi-year title sponsorship agreement with Acura, marking a new era for America’s #1 street race . So, on April 14, Rossi will defend his Long Beach title when the words “Drivers, start your engines!” mark the 45th edition of the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach!
