Wow! At the time of this writing, I am busy getting ready for the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach . The Grand Prix is celebrating its 45th year and the Long Beach MG Club has been a part of it since the beginning, that is a great accomplishment . There are a few members that have been involved in every race since the very first race in the streets of Long Beach: Dennis Connor, Bob & Barbara Funk, Iler Ganz, Marilyn Gettys, Lois & Rick Gettys, Bea Nickerson & Ernie Prokopovych . Now that is a great accomplishment . Good going everyone! Last month I asked for people to send in a short (or long) story about how they found the MG Club. The first article is from Rick Gettys, my Dad! (See his article on the next page .) Now, I WANT YOU to send and article to the Editor! (Me) So that we can see how you began in the Long Beach MG Club . I know you all have a story . Even if you were born into the club, how did you start getting involved? What is your favorite part of the club, the Rallyes, the Racing, the Socialization . We want you to share! Other than the Long Beach Grand Prix and our meetings April is a pretty quiet month . But the racing starts up again in May . We also have the HB Concours in early June, which kicks off our Summer . Hope to see you soon! 2 How I Found the LBMG Club Richard Gettys (Rick) Entry into LBMG 1960 In September 1959 a group of 4 of us decided to go to the Los Angeles Times Grand Prix for sports cars at Riverside Raceway . This race stayed known, for many, many years as the Los Angeles Times Grand Prix . As we wandered around the race track watching the racing activities we noticed one activity that occurred between each of the preliminary races . Between each race an MG would drive, on the track, between corners towing a chariot, with a funny shape, filled with a group of guys dressed all in white . Pants, shirts, and shoes . We all had a marvelous time at the race, I believe it was won by Phil Hill in a Ferrari GT . On the way home we talked about the cars towing the workers, (we found out later it was the LBMG Flagging Team) . They seemed to be having a good time and were obviously part of the racing activities . We wanted to get involved . One of our group volunteered to find out who they were and how we could get involved. Early in 1960 we found out that the flag men were with the Long Beach MG Club. We decided to go to one of their meetings and find out what else they did. (I won’t tell you who my friends were, they might want to write their own stories!) We joined the LBMG in 1960, at the small Recreation Park clubhouse and became involved in the membership, as I recall was 400 to 500. Our first race was at Santa Barbara, on the Goleta airport runways . My first assignment on the flag team was to work the last corner before the start/finish line. My last memory was of the A/B production race and my mentor/trainer was Paul Russell. After a few laps all h*** broke loose, coming at us, spinning out of control was a Cobra, we started running, running right into an out of control Corvette . Since I am writing this article, we survived and Paul Russell really enjoyed it!!!! After the Saturday was finally over, I decided that flagging was not my cup a tea so I went over to the scoring trailer . There I met Jack and Dawn Duncan and asked them if I could please help in their activities . After the first race at Santa Barbara I became involved in Timing and Scoring and have enjoyed all of the years, and all of the venues we have been to . 3 TIME BANDITS COMES OF AGE As you may remember TIME BANDITS, in 2018 ran for the 20th time . So that follows that in 2019 was 21 . That meant that this year TIME BANDITS could gamble . Thus we put seven cars out on the road to have an interesting drive . We decided that this year we would give the navigators a break and eliminate some of the speed changes . This route was originally run in 2009,with a great deal more speed changes . We wondered if that was a good idea, as it turned out both drivers and navigators found that they really enjoyed the event . So we may have to consider the same format next year . The weather turned out to be absolutely fabulous which made it even more fun, with all the rain that we have had we were very pleased . We were in hopes of a desert in bloom, and there were many flowers, but not as many as there were other areas of the desert . At any rate we started out going along the freeway, (you can't avoid them if you want to get you out of town) to 138 and out to back side of Hesperia toward Lucern Valley, on to 29 Palm, and on to Amboy Rd. to I 40 to Goffs Rd. to I 95 enter Nevada for the final leg on 163 to Laughlin. The group pulled into a rest area that we have used for the last few years, where we scored control cards and awarded trophies . We are investigating a possible new route for next year . We will keep you posted . We hope to see more of you next year . • For Immediate Release Mouser Electronics Gears up with Indycar Champion Tony Kanaan for Grand Prix at Long Beach
1000 N. Main Street Mansfield, TX 76063, USA mouser.com (817) 804-3800 For Immediate Release Mouser Electronics Gears Up with IndyCar Champion Tony Kanaan for Grand Prix at Long Beach April 11, 2012 – Mouser Electronics, Inc., regarded as a top design engineering resource and global distributor for semiconductors and electronic components, today announced racing preparations are in top gear for the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, CA. where IndyCar champion Tony Kanaan will drive the No. 11 Mouser Electronics/GEICO/KV Racing Technology Chevrolet/Firestone IndyCar on April 15. The Long Beach race signals the green flag for Mouser as it launches into the 2012 IndyCar season. Mouser first set its sights on IndyCar sponsorship last year as an innovative way to communicate the company’s drive for high-performance and speed, and as a high-tech platform to showcase its valued supplier partnerships. Joining Mouser as co-sponsors are TTI, Inc, Murata, Molex, TE Connectivity, Phoenix Contact, Littelfuse, KEMET, Ohmite, Hammond, Harwin, Digi, ebm-papst, Omron, BIVAR, Fluke, and Amphenol. After a record- breaking 2011 debut, Mouser is eagerly racing into the new Indy season alongside its IndyCar partners and Kanaan in the driver’s seat. The infamous race spans 167 miles of adrenaline-filled track. Ever since its commencement in 1975, the track at Long Beach has seen decades of high-intensity, high-speed duels between some of the top names in IndyCar racing, such as the 1977 race where Mario Andretti avoided a first-lap, multi-car collision and went on to out-duel Formula One stars Jody Scheckter and Niki Lauda to become the first American to win a F/One race in a U.S.

It overshadowed the similar e orts of Lotus boss Colin Chapman and remained competitive for several seasons. We believe it is one of designer Eric Broadleyʼs greatest cars, so turn to page 16 to see what our resident racer made of the original prototype at Donington Park. Although the coupe is arguably more iconic, the open version of the T70 was more successful. Developed in 1965, the Group 7 machine could take a number of di erent V8 engines and was ideal for the inaugural Can-Am contest in ʼ66. Champion John Surtees, Dan Gurney and Mark Donohue won races during the campaign, while Surtees was the only non-McLaren winner in ʼ67. The big Lola remains a force in historic racing. I learned a great deal from my advisor Jack Davis, who when he was not providing helpful feedback on my work, was always willing to toss the baseball around in the park. I must also thank committee members Sean Adams, Betty Smocovitis, Stephen Perz, Paul Ortiz, and Richard Crepeau as well as University of Florida faculty members Michael Bowen, Juliana Barr, Stephen Noll, Joseph Spillane, and Bill Link.
