Ojell 2007 Electronic version available at http://ethesis.fi ii ABSTRACT The thesis consists of five international congress papers and a summary with an introduction. The overarching aim of the studies and the summary is to examine the inner coherency of the theological and anthropological thinking of Gregory of Nyssa (331•395). To the issue is applied an ‘apophatic approach’ with a ‘Christological focus’. It is suggested that the coherency is to be found from the Christological concept of unity between ‘true God’ and ‘true man’ in the one person of Jesus Christ. Gregory is among the first to make a full recognition of two natures of Christ, and to use this recognition systematically in his writings. The aim of the studies is pursued by the method of ‘identification’, which is a combination the modern ‘problematic method’ and Gregory's own method of ‘following’ (akolouthia). The preoccupation with issues relating to the so•called Hellenization of Christianity in the patristic era was strong in the twentieth•century Gregory scholarship. The most discussed questions have been the Greek influence in his thought and his philosophical sources. In the five articles of the thesis it is examined how Gregory's thinking stands in its own right. The manifestly apophatic character of his theological thinking is made a part of the method of examining his thought according to the principles of his own method of following. The basic issue concerning the relation of theology and anthropology is discussed in the contexts of his central Trinitarian, anthropological, Christological and eschatological sources. In the summary the Christocentric integration of Gregory's thinking is discussed also in relation to the issue of the alleged Hellenization. The main conclusion of the thesis concerns the concept of theology in Gregory. It is not indebted to the classical concept of theology as metaphysics or human speculation of God. Instead, it is founded to the traditional Judeo•Christian idea of God who speaks with his people face to face. In Gregory,theologia connotes theoikonomia of God's self•revelation. It may be regarded as the state of constant expression of love between the Creator and his created image. In theology, the human person becomes an image of the Word by which the Father expresses his love to "man" whom he loves as his own Son. Eventually the whole humankind, as one, gives the divine Word a physical • audible and sensible • Body. Humankind then becomes what theology is. The whole humanity expresses divine love by manifesting Christ in words and deeds, singing in one voice to the glory of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. iii A C K N O W L E D G E M E N T S It may seem unusual to find a Finnish name on the title page of a doctoral thesis on a Greek Patristic theme. And, it is only possible now, due to the fact that many people have contributed to making this dissertation work a reality. I owe thanks to many people. First of all, to Professor Emeritus Tuomo Mannermaa (Ecumenics, University of Helsinki) and Professor Gunnar af Hällström (Orthodox Systematic Theology and Patristics, University of Joensuu). Under their supervision, I completed my graduate studies in Ecumenics, and my master’s thesis on a Patristic theme. After finishing my master’s thesis on the theological anthropology of Gregory of Nyssa in 1997, they both encouraged me to continue my studies in this area. In the year 2000, I had the opportunity to begin this doctoral project, which has now finally come to its conclusion. Professor af Hällström and Professor Risto Saarinen have been the official supervisors of this project. Their patient support and instruction during my long labour, and Professor Saarinen’s exemplary care for his students at Helsinki University have made my work possible, and I owe them my sincerest thanks. The significance of the critical advice and support provided to me by Professor Pauli Annala at every turn along the way is well beyond my thanks – but thanks are all I can offer to him in return for his sharing and camaraderie. I also want to express my gratitude to Professor Jaana Hallamaa. As the head of the Department of Systematic Theology at Helsinki University, through good times and bad, she has kept my spirit high with her unreserved support. I am also grateful to Professor Sammeli Juntunen, who did well in pushing me to bring the work into its final completion. The work now being presented for public discussion in the University of Helsinki is the result of a process which has been carried out through active encounters with members of the international society of Gregory scholars. They meet in colloquiums arranged on a regular basis to concentrate on the work and thought of this Cappadocian Father. I have been very fortunate in being able to participate in this modern scholarly tradition, which, it is safe to say, is one of the finest and most seminal of them all. The first meeting of Gregory scholars took place in 1969 in Chevetogne, and to date, ten meetings have been held throughout Europe. I iv have been honoured to participate in the last three, which were held in Paderborn (1998), Athens (2000), and Olomouc (2004). I am grateful to Prof. Hubertus R. Drobner who invited me to attend the Paderborn Colloquium, and made me feel welcome there. I am also grateful to Dr. Friedhelm Mann, through whom Prof. Drobner learned of my interests and sent me an invitation after my visit to the Forschungstelle Gregor von Nyssa in Münster. The warm and friendly personalities of these two exemplar scholars now represent to me the inviting character of the Gregory Scholarship, the other character of which is the Scholarship’s high academic quality. To my joy I have learned that mutual care belongs together with its academic values: I remember with warmth how Prof. Lenka Karfíková introduced me to Prof. Elias Moutsoulas in Paderborn, in order to ensure that the organizers of the next conference in Athens would know who I was when selecting its scheduled speakers – and there, in Athens, I performed my first international presentation on Gregory. The significance of the meetings with other Gregory scholars, in Gregory Colloquiums and during other occasions, has been essential in the preparation of this dissertation. During my studies, the substantial critical support and supervision provided by the members of the academic collective of Gregory scholars was of vital importance. With my work now accomplished, I feel like a son – however stubborn and poorly gifted – of that collective, to which I owe my great thanks. My memory of Professor Andreas Spira (1929•2004), is a loving memory of a person who was a father of endless inspiration to his many students.     The Study of the Fundamentals of Martin Luther’s Theology in the Light of Ecumenism 1 Tuomo Mannermaa Translated and edited by Kirsi Stjerna It is not unusual in the history of academic disciplines that new ideas concerning the fundamentals of a particular discipline emerge either by accident or as a result of impulses from another field of scholarship. This is the case also in today’s Luther research. Two particular fields can be named from most recent history, fields with significant impulses for new insights: ecumenism and philosophy. The philosophical impulses are connected with the task of locating Luther’s theology in regard to both scholasticism, which preceded Luther, and the philosophy of the modern times, which succeeded him. Ecumenism presents its own challenges for Luther research and Lutheran theological tradition. It is the latter issue that I wish to address here, touching upon the issues related to philosophy only as far as it is helpful in light of ecumenical questions at stake. The ecumenical impulses originate, above all, from two sources: Lutheran–Orthodox theological discussions, on the one hand, and Lutheran–Catholic theological encounters, on the other. The challenge issued to Luther research by Lutheran–Orthodox discussions lies in the theme “Luther and the doctrine of divinization,” whereas Lutheran–Catholic cooperation in Luther research has set out to clarify the theme, “Luther as a theologian of love.” Especially the late Catholic Luther specialist Peter Manns has unraveled the latter topic wit h his fruitful Luther interpretation. The first of these two topics, “Luther and theosis (divinization),” is fundamental in the sense that it gives expression to the patristic standard of comparison that all these three denominations share and that can serve as a starting point in their process toward a common understanding.

    The Holy See APOSTOLIC LETTER CANDOR LUCIS AETERNAE OF THE HOLY FATHER FRANCIS ON THE SEVENTH CENTENARY OF THE DEATH OF DANTE ALIGHIERI SPLENDOUR OF LIGHT ETERNAL, the Word of God became flesh from the Virgin Mary when, to the message of the angel, she responded: “Behold the handmaid of the Lord” (cf. Lk 1:38). The liturgical feast that celebrates this ineffable mystery held a special place in the life and work of the supreme poet Dante Alighieri, a prophet of hope and a witness to the innate yearning for the infinite present in the human heart. On this Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord, I readily add my voice to the great chorus of those who honour his memory in the year marking the seventh centenary of his death. In Florence, which reckoned time ab Incarnatione, 25 March was the first day of the calendar year. Because of its closeness to the spring equinox and the Church’s celebration of the paschal mysteries, the feast of the Annunciation was likewise associated with the creation of the world and the dawn of the new creation through the redemption won by Christ on the cross. It thus invites us to contemplate, in light of the Word made flesh, the loving plan that is the heart and inspiration of Dante’s most famous work, the Divine Comedy, in whose final canto Saint Bernard celebrates the event of the incarnation in the memorable verses: “Within thy womb rekindled was the love, By heat of which in the eternal peace After such wise this flower has germinated” (Par.

Seeking to establish the coherence and utility of the paradoxical language characteristic of the received christological tradition (e.g. the impassible Word became passible flesh and suffered impassibly), it argues that the doctrine of divine apatheia illuminates the apocalyptic and soteriological dimension of the incarnate Son’s passible life more effectively than recent reactions against it. The first chapter explores the Christology of Cyril of Alexandria and the meaning and place of apatheia within it. In light of the christological tradition which Cyril epitomized, the second chapter engages contemporary critiques and re-appropriations of impassibility, focusing on the particular contributions of Jürgen Moltmann, Robert W.     St. Gregory of Nyssa: His Contribution to Christian Philosophy Longino Rutagwelera Department of Philosophy & Ethics The Archbishop James University College, Songea, Tanzania Abstract St. Gregory of Nyssa contributed enormously to the understanding of the ancillary role of philosophy in relation to Christian Theology. He understood that philosophy is at the behest of theology in the sense that philosophy serves as an instrument for explaining the mystery that constitutes the subject matter of theology and for rendering it understandable to the finite human intellect. He is one of several who elucidated the instrumental role of Platonism and Neoplatonism for expounding the Christian deposits of faith in such areas as the Holy Trinity, Christology, Creation and the Eschatological Universal Restoration of all human beings. This paper analyses his understanding of contemplation and its role in the process of attaining knowledge. It also critically analyses human freedom, the abuse of which, from his point of view, is the origin of evil. The paper shows the current relevance of philosophy and the timeliness of philosophy’s service as an instrument in order to make faith in general and religious practices in particular not only understandable but also justifiable. The contemporary world is one that experiences the mushrooming of religions and of Christian denominations and so manifests itself as a world in dire need of critical thinking in order to bring to light the rationale of believing and concretely putting into practice what religions teach. The paper intends to provide a rational stability to the workings of faith by curbing and re-orienting the present day religion-induced fanaticism and radicalism that leave quite insecure human aspirations to peace, integrity and social cohesion.

    Hooker on Divinization: our participation of Christ* David Neelands Trinity College, Toronto ABSTRACT: Richard Hooker took very seriously the significance of glorification in his account of Justification and Sanctification. In this he was, like some other Reformation figures, informed by the Patristic notion of theosis or divinization. Theosis also links Hooker’s account of God’s grace with his Christology. To ignore this aspect of his account of engraced human existence is to miss his use of the logic of theosis to confirm the anti- Pelagianism of the Reformation. Glorification For Richard Hooker, glorification is intimately tied to his account of Justification and to the sanctification that inevitably accompanies it. The connection, through the faith that is required as much for glorification as for justification, is described in one of the earliest of Hooker’s compositions: because the last of the graces of God doth so follow the first, that he glorifieth none, but whom he hath justified, nor justifieth any, but whom he hath called to a true, effectual, and lively faith in Christ Jesus, therefore S. Jude exhorting us to build our selves, mentioneth here expresly only faith, as the thing wherein we must be edified; for that faith is the ground and the glorie of all the welfare of this building.1 When Hooker came to write on justification, the surprising Reformation topos for his defence for the controversial view that many of our ancestors /138/ who lived and died in papist errors where nevertheless participants in God’s salvation, he offered a scholastic overview of God’s work of grace in the redeemed, work that includes both sanctification and glorification, as well as justification: * Published in From Logos to Christos: Essays on Christology in Honour of Joanne McWilliam, ed.
