Countdown to June 4th Local Summer Jobs By Julie Boylan, Staff Writer Maybe it‘s your parents nagging you to be a hard-working teen like they were themselves at your age, or maybe you just need gas money, but whatever the reason, for many American teens, a summer job is a must on their summer agenda. However, once it‘s established that yes, a summer job just might be a good idea, the next question would be where to go to get this job? It might take a little effort, but summer jobs for teens are all around the area. Remem- ber that the search for a summer job is sometimes difficult, so don‘t get discouraged or give up easily. If you don‘t know where to start your search, here are some places in the area to try for a summer job, to take in some hard-earned cash, and to join the millions of teens in the American work force, if only for three months. Fast Food: One of your choices for a summer job is McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy‘s, or any other burger-flipping, heart-attack-giving, grease- filled all-American fast-food restaurants that dot the Lehigh Val- ley. Maybe this isn‘t the most glamorous job out there, but you have got to start somewhere, and there‘s a bigger chance you‘ll be hired here than wherever your dream job might be. As an em- ployee of the fast-food chain of your choice, possible jobs could include cashier, drive-through operator, or food maker. If you can put up with the visors and the occasional obnoxious customer, this is a summer job to remember, and it will earn you some good old fashioned minimum wage cash. Grocery Stores:

Nothing like a job in the food services! Take the grocery store Giant for example. Here, you can join the many Freedom stu- dents, who already roam the aisles in dashing green polos, stock- ing shelves, moving heavy boxes, bagging customer‘s food, col- lecting grocery carts, and answering questions. Giant has two lo- cations in Bethlehem—Bethlehem Square on Linden Street and on Easton Avenue. Or, you could try Wegmans which is located at 5000 Wegmans Drive. Bethlehem Dairy Store (aka The Cup):

This small local ice cream store is big on character and another possibility for a summer job. The Cup is located on Linden Street, near Liberty High School, and they have another location on the Lehigh University Campus. As a worker of The Cup, your primary job would of course be scooping ice cream or getting whatever else the customer wants. Like with any other job dealing with custom- Photos Courtesy of Luisa Marin, Staff Writer ers, you have to try to make impossible customers happy.
