OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2013 Tishri/Cheshvan/Kislev 5774

From Weber SPECIAL EVENTS ou were in this summer? Weren’t you scared? NEW MEMBER WELCOME & NEW STUDENT WELCOME – October 4 Y On the last day of our recent Rodeph Torah/ trip to Israel, I told our group that they SHABBAT UNDER THE STARS would be asked this question again and again when October 11 they returned home. To prepare them for the inevitable, I asked everyone to tell me what they were scared about during our 11-day SERVICE FOR NEW 18-YEAR journey through the Galilee, the Golan Heights, Tel Aviv, the MEMBERS, AND BLESSING FOR Negev, the Dead Sea, and of course, Jerusalem. Here are their NEW DRIVERS – October 25 responses: ROCK SHABBAT – Get Ready for  I was scared I would run out of money on our shopping Hanukkah! – November 15 trips.  I was scared I would explode from over-eating. GUEST SPEAKER: MICHAEL RILEY,  I was scared my wife would insist on buying a condo here “The Irreverent Reverend” before we left. November 22

 I was scared I would be the first person not to float in the HANUKKAH BEGINS – November 27 Dead Sea. (See pages 7 to 9 for blessings,  I was scared our luggage would never arrive (long story, readings and more for Hanukkah) but it did – eventually).

 I was scared I wouldn’t survive the taxi ride in Jerusalem. SHABBAT HANUKKAH SERVICE:  I was scared the trip would end. Bring your own hanukiyyah & four candles to celebrate! – November 29 What’s missing from this list? As always, fears about our safety. This was the fifth Israel trip Shira and I have led, and there has not MY LIFE CHANGING EXPERIENCE been one moment when we felt our lives were in jeopardy (well, A congregant’s trip to Israel – pg. 6 except for the taxi ride). Follow us on Facebook and at We toured the Golan Heights. We actually stood about 300 feet trt.org from the Syrian border where we learned that until the current civil war in Syria, the only thing separating it from Israel was a 3-foot high, rusted chain-link fence. We also learned during our visit that over 100 victims of the Syrian violence have secretly been brought into Israel for treatment, and returned to their homes in complete privacy; if anyone knew that their lives had been saved by Israeli doctors, they would be in danger. continued next page

Temple Rodeph Torah NEWS October/November 2013

We visited a community center in an Arab town, where we saw a pioneering effort: a circus made up of Jewish and Moslem children and teenagers. They were delightful and talented – and just a part of the tiny effort to bridge the immense gap between the two peoples. But we never doubted our safety.

We were in the West Bank, too. We drove from the Dead Sea to Jerusalem that way, although no one who was unfamiliar with Israeli geography would know it. Our hotel was in East Jerusalem, and every trip downtown took us through Arab neighborhoods. We were even in Jerusalem during the holidays celebrating the end of the Moslem holiday of Ramadan, when 500,000 Muslims converged on the Temple Mount at the same time. What was it like to have a half-million Muslims observing their holiday together in Israeli- controlled Jerusalem? I’ll tell you: the traffic was murder! But here’s something that didn’t make the news in the United States: there was not one act of violence, not one arrest, in the four days of celebration. Not one. At the same time that Muslims were tearing their countries and each other apart in Syria, Egypt, Afghanistan and most of the countries that were recently celebrating the “Arab spring,” in Israel they were praying and celebrating in safety and in peace. Something to think about.

The trip itself was wonderful. Visiting places we love and places we’ve never seen before, having the opportunity to speak Hebrew again and having the holy experience of being surrounded by of every age, every color, every nationality – there is nothing like a trip to Israel! Shira and I always enjoy sharing our love of Israel with others who have never seen it before, and the diverse group which Federation brought together from all over Monmouth County (and all over the United States) gave us new ways of seeing familiar sights.

Pictures from our trip are on the TRT Facebook page, and I hope you will check them out. But I would like to give you one image, one thought: On our last night in Jerusalem, we were returning to the hotel on our tour bus around 7:30 p.m. Several people said they planned to go “into town” on their own when we got back, and we realized it would be faster for them if we dropped them at the light-rail station. When we stopped the bus, over half the trip participants jumped off and headed for the train. When I saw 30 (well, 28 Jews and two Christians) hop off the tour bus to take a train downtown in a foreign country, with no concern except how late they could stay out at night, I knew our trip had been a success. Because they knew they weren’t in a foreign country at all. They were home.

Temple Rodeph Torah NEWS October/November 2013

Notes from the Cantor

As you might have seen, but definitely heard about at our High Holiday services, TRT is in the midst of many worship experiments. We've been very successful with Rock Shabbat, and believe Rock Hashanah is something to be repeated as well. But these once per month services are not the only changes we are making.

We have guest speakers coming; we are planning a service under the stars around our new fire pit. We will have services featuring our choir. We will have worship honoring our new members and our 18-year members, worship installing our board members and worship delving into Torah in a new way with our guests from Torah Turnings. We even plan on running a Dinner Service, where worship, discussion and Torah will be intertwined with dinner. In fact, we have so many things scheduled we are having trouble finding dates for other new ideas or guests as they come along.

If you were moved by something during the holidays, if you found something with passion and joy, I hope you will check out what we are doing. Not every service is a rock service, not every service is “traditional.” Some will be a mix. There will be amazing things to learn and new things to find passion over as we study new subjects and learn from new guests. I truly hope you will check out our calendar to see when we are doing different things, and find your joy in coming!

So why are we doing this? We believe there is much to learn about ourselves, connecting with God and creating community by trying different things. When I introduce a new melody, you could sit back thinking, that’s the wrong tune; or you could understand the prayer completely differently than you had before. You might connect with community because you are all learning together as well. TRT, you have been amazing at accepting new melodies and trying new kinds of music at worship. But we believe there is more to learn, bringing in new teachers (like our upcoming discussion with Pastor Mike Riley, or our service in March with Torah Turnings). This can open our ears to new ideas and a new way of understanding old texts. It opens us up to thinking about religion, d’var torah and sermon differently to hear how others do it.

Our services honoring our members, or our students, our teachers… these services are an opportunity to congratulate our members on what they learn, what they teach, what they contribute to making us a TRT family. Pirkei Avot (teachings of our ancestors) tells us, “Who is wise? One who learns from everyone.” Our members and students have something to teach all of us, and so we honor them for doing so.

We believe Shabbat is an important part of life. Taking even a few moments to stop, be with family, be with God, be with Judaism, can change your life, and so we offer a variety of different opportunities for you to do so with TRT through communal worship. We hope that every worship is filled with passion and joy, with honor and wisdom and with connection, and we hope to see you there.

From the Desk of Rabbi Shira Stern

We teachers of Religious Schools have a dual responsibility when we prepare our classes: we want to infuse the children with facts and feelings that will help them identify strongly with Judaism and all things Jewish, and we want them to understand their place in the world at large. We need to help them grow as Jews, and at the same time, help them adapt to a life they will live outside their Jewish bubble.

How do we do both? Do we confine ourselves to traditional texts or do we help them find their modern voices, which will be shaped by everything they learn outside of Temple Rodeph Torah, including in their homes, schools and after-school activities?

On October 13th, as the of Monmouth County prepares to launch its annual Day, the Center for a Jewish Future will focus on how to turn performing a “mitzvat aseh” – a positive commandment – into actions of , repairing the world. Just as Marlboro Township has created a wonderful role model with its Teen Advisory Committee, a group that now numbers over 1,000 teenagers who regularly “Do Good” ─ so we, too, will join forces to bring positive change in our community.

For our school-wide project, we will be collecting and assembling “Survival Kits” for seniors living in the Marlboro area, who might be at risk should we have another difficult storm season this year. We will start the day with a short text study on Leviticus 19:32, “Show respect to the aged; honor the presence of an elder; be in awe of your God. I am Adonai.” They will assemble and personalize each kit with cards of support and blessing, so that when people open their packages, they will know that the next generation has begun to take responsibility for the welfare of the community.

If you would like to help us and are able to contribute any of these items below, please let us know at 732- 308-3836.

1. lightweight blanket 2. flashlight and extra batteries 3. water bottles 4. Stick-on lights (battery powered) 5. Energy bars 6. battery-powered radios. 7. manual can opener 8. moist towelettes 9. Toilet paper 10. First Aid kit 11. Cans of soup and tuna 12. Graham crackers/cookies

May our children go from strength to strength as they provide for their community!

From the Executive Director:

“She never met anyone she didn’t like.”

“Wait, that’s not totally right. She never met anyone she didn’t call ‘friend.’”

That was the way Maurice Heitt described his beloved wife, Helena. I asked Maurice to sit down with me and tell me about Helena, a woman I only know by the fund created at TRT in her memory. That fund has a single purpose: provide a Shabbat meal to a TRT family suffering from illness or other setback. In the following pages you will see donations to the Helena Project Fund. In fact, I cannot recall a month when there was not at least one donation to this fund. Hence, I asked Maurice to help fill in the background information for me. Who was Helena? Why did he create this fund?

He described an involved, devoted mother and a companion who balanced him; the kind of partner we should all be lucky to find. Helena battled breast cancer and when she lost that battle, her husband had to focus all of his attention to his then 10 and 13-year old sons. As for the rest of my question – what motived him to pursue this project? Jewish tradition encourages the giving of tzedakah to honor the memory of a loved one, but rarely do we see the creation of sustained, purposeful giving. “I had no idea about the project until after it was done. Her friends, they’re the ones who took care of that,” admitted a touched and ever-appreciative Maurice, “because that’s something Helena would have done.” For a moment, he and I sat silently digesting the impact of his statement.

Although I never had the pleasure of knowing her personally, I know Helena’s kindness because I am one of the families touched by the fund created with a simple motivation: “That’s what Helena would have done.” I meet her again every time I see another donation to continue the mitzvah, and every time a meal is delivered to a family in need. Challenges are inevitable, but our community proves that caring is also a given thanks to people like Helena.

Rachel Klein

This October, during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I encourage you to act locally and support the Helena Project Fund.

NOTE: TRT BORN TO ONE OPPORTUNITY! If you would like to deliver a Shabbat dinner to a TRT family in need, please email Rachel Klein at [email protected]. (Culinary skills not necessary; meals are provided by a local kosher restaurant.)

MY LIFE CHANGING EXPERIENCE

I had the privilege of going on a “pilgrimage” to Israel this summer with Weber, Stern and the Jewish Federation of Monmouth County. I never had any particular pull to see Israel. After my kids had the times of their lives on Birthright, I thought it was wonderful, but didn’t really know if I would ever go. I did think at times, IF I ever found the courage to go, it would only be if Don and Shira were part of the journey. Then the opportunity came along, and I knew it was now or never. I was so nervous! How could I travel to the Middle East? It’s not a good time…it’s never a good time! I was so torn, but I put my fears aside and did it. From the minute I stepped on the plane, my fears and anxiety disappeared and never returned for one single moment. I had no expectations. I just wanted to see Israel. But oh boy…was I in for a journey; a life changing journey. Every place we traveled to was more amazing than the last. The people, the history, the food, the excitement, the passion! I never knew what I was missing! Our tour was on the go every moment of every day, and yet it still wasn’t enough! I learned so much about that beautiful country. I felt so close to the people. I was actually living history! I was seeing and touching streets, forts, temples, tunnels and landscapes that we read about in the Torah! Stories that we’ve always heard about suddenly came to life! The Golan Heights, Galilee, Haifa, Jerusalem, Tel Aviv – Masada, The Wall, The Bedouin Desert, The Dead Sea…we saw so much, we did so much, and I just wanted more and more. When we first arrived in Jerusalem, overlooking the gorgeous view, Don and Shira led us in the Shehecheyanu prayer and said “Welcome home!” It was one of the most beautiful moments of the trip. I was overcome with emotion that I never expected to feel. I WAS home. I felt safe. I was at peace. And I felt those emotions throughout our trip – every minute of every day. I had never been happier. Towards the end, Don asked if any of us were afraid while we were there. At that point, it was actually a joke. We all laughed and said things like – “I was scared that I wouldn’t have enough time to shop, or I would run out or space on my camera!” This trip was such a blessing for me. The passion of the people, the beauty of the county and the love in my heart will remain with me forever. I can always go back there in my mind, and I truly hope I can also go back there in person. I must go back to Israel…my home! And YOU must go there too! I promise you, you will LOVE it! It will change your life forever! Robbin Friedell

MY SUMMER NFTY TRIP TO ISRAEL

Thank you for the scholarship money to help me pay for my NFTY trip to Israel. With the temple’s help, I was able to see Israel in a whole different way than if I just went by myself. The trip from Poland to Israel was amazing. I will never forget the first time I was in the Golden City and at the Western Wall. My favorite part was climbing in the Negev and riding a camel. I met people who I feel I will be lifelong friends with. My trip to Israel was an experience of a lifetime. Thank you again to TRT for the help to make it happen. I hope than anyone who has the opportunity to make this amazing journey should go.

ROVIN’REPORTER

For each of the anniversary couples in this issue, we can honestly state that there were many “enchanted evenings” when destiny, fate, good luck, or just magic happened. Each of the five couples selected shared their incredible stories of meeting and falling in love. Their comments make your rovin’ reporter laugh and feel privileged to hear their stories.

Robert and Abbey Graf met via JDate, although they agree that the meeting would have happened anyway (“It was meant to be,” said Abbey) because sisters of each had been threatening to “fix them up” before the intervention of modern technology. They reluctantly went out on a first date with a mindset that this wouldn’t work anyway, but it was indeed magic and they were married within 10 months of that first date. Abbey said Robert was, and I quote, “A real mensch” and he won her heart immediately. They have 6 year-old twins, Nathan and Sam, and will be married nine years in October.

Tara and Glenn said that marriage is a work in progress and Glenn confessed that each morning on opening his eyes, he says “Good morning, beautiful” to his wonderful wife. They met while on a ski trip with friends but not on the slopes, in the hot tub of all places! They dated for about a year. They honeymooned in Jamaica and have shared a life of humor, giving, support and kindness. They have two children, Abigail and Julia, and have become active temple members, always with a sense of humor. They are celebrating their 14th anniversary.

If you thought 10 months between meeting and marriage was short, Ingrid and Tony DiFazio met during a summer vacation in East Stroudsburg and were married four months later. She was a guidance counselor and he, a New York City policeman. Their sense of humor and the way they tell about their meeting are precious. They have a son Michael who is an IT specialist. They are celebrating their 31st anniversary and are a joy to all who know them.

Hedy and Edward Swartz are celebrating their 51st anniversary, and where did they meet? Brighton Beach, New York of course! Ed was a student at Pace and Hedy was a student at the Fashion Institute. They have two sons, daughters-in-law, four grandchildren and a zest for living that is incredible. They honeymooned in Bermuda and when asked about advice to the newlyweds, they said to have patience and always talk things over. Hedy also added, “Make love, not war.”

The Tannenbaums, Neil and Robbin, met on a singles’ week-end in the swimming pool at Tamarac. They were with a group of friends and all of a sudden they realized that this was a special meeting after all. They have been married for 33 years and have two sons, Matthew and David. Matthew works in New York and David in Florida. Their advice is to have mutual respect for each other. How wonderful to share these stories and the glow of comradeship in their marriages. Happy Anniversary to all of our couples in October and November.

SOCIAL ACTION

Once again the support and generosity of our congregation was fantastic. On Yom Kippur, our TRT community collected an overwhelming amount of food for the Foodbank of Monmouth & Ocean Counties ─ 13,450 pounds! We hope you that your experience in performing this mitzvah was an “Act of Loving Kindness, with Passion & Joy.”

The Social Action Committee would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to the Men’s Club, Sisterhood, Worship Committee and Rabbi Weber for providing the additional funds necessary to purchase our wonderful reusable High Holiday bags. A special thank you to Mrs. Klein and the 8-12th grade students that volunteered to help “stuff” the bags.

Our Mitzvah of the Month for October will be participating in the community-wide day of volunteerism and philanthropy on Sunday, October 13th. TRT will be participating in Mitzvah Day by sponsoring a Blood Drive & Flu Shot Clinic from 9:30-1:30, (sign up is suggested by emailing [email protected] ) in addition to collecting new toys and supplies for our troops and donations to purchase malaria nets as part of the “Nothing but Nets “campaign. Please look for the Mitzvah Day flyer in the back of this newsletter for more information and to see the other events that are taking place within our community.

It is said that there is a “first” for everything. This is a “first” and a never again, where the first day of Hanukkah coincides with Thanksgiving. That being said, the Social Action Committee requests your

13

Temple Rodeph Torah NEWS October/November 2013 participation in Ner Shel Tzedakah (“Candle of Righteousness”) to make the 6th night of Hanukkah special for a child less fortunate by donating a toy or an item suitable for a teenager. The collection box for the toy drive will remain in the atrium from November 17th through December 8th so that you can share your good fortune with those in need. Imagine the joy you can bring to a child by contributing just one small gift. Suggestions for teenagers are: lipgloss, nail polish or a sports-related item.

Our Mitzvah of the Month for November will be our Annual Coat Drive beginning on November 17th. We can use clean, gently used or new coats in all sizes for men, women and children. We will also accept new gloves or mittens, hats and scarves. That box will remain in the atrium until December 15th. Thank you in advance for your support.

The Social Action Committee is sponsoring our first CPR Class of the year on Sunday, November 17th from 12:30-4:30 p.m. To RSVP please contact Marla Bucher at [email protected], or 732-972-7307.

We continue our partnership with the Soup Kitchen at St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church in Asbury Park. If you would like to volunteer to help serve meals on any Sunday from 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m., please contact Andrea at [email protected], or 732-946-3535.

Torah Today A Brief Summary of Each Week’s Torah Portion

Shabbat 10/4-10/5 Parashat Noah, Genesis 6:9-11:32 Summary by Janet Klemons God is angry at the people and prepares to destroy all life, but spares Noah and his family, because he walks with God. He instructs Noah on how to make an ark and who he should take with him. The flood lasts 40 days and 40 nights, and God makes a covenant with Noah never to destroy humanity and the earth again. Noah has three sons, Shem, Ham and Japeth. The whole world branches out from these people. Shem’s lineage leads to Nahor, father of Terah, who was the father of Abraham.

Shabbat 10/11-10/12 Parashat Lech Lecha, Genesis 12:1-17:27 Summary by Sharon Aptaker God tells Abram to leave his homeland and travel to the land of Canaan. He promises to make of Abram a great nation. Abram obeys and settles in Hebron. His nephew Lot settles further east near Sodom. During a rebellion in the region, Lot is taken captive by King Chedarlaomer. Abram and a few hundred men defeat Chedarlaomer and rescue Lot, earning respect for the power of Abram’s God. Abram wonders how he will continue to possess the land since he is childless. God promises Abram that his seed will be as numerous as the stars in heaven and Abram believes Him. God also foretells a period of enslavement before Abram’s seed returns to possess the land of Canaan. A flaming torch appears out of the darkness to seal the covenant between God and Abram. Abram’s wife, Sarai, doubting she will ever bear children, offers her maid Hagar to Abram. Hagar conceives and bears a son, Ishmael. God reaffirms His promises to Abram, whom He renames Abraham, meaning, “father of a multitude”; within the year Sarah will bear him a son, to be named Isaac. Isaac’s descendants will possess the land of Canaan as an everlasting possession. They will be God’s chosen people and they will follow God. God instructs Abraham to circumcise every male in his household as a token of this covenant.

Shabbat 10/18-10/19 Parashat Vayera, Genesis 18:1-22:24 Summary by Sheryl Cooper God promises a son to Abraham and Sarah. God plans to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah. Abraham convinces God not to destroy them if there are at least 10 innocent people there. God destroys the city but saves Lot and his family. Lot’s wife is turned into a pillar of salt because she disobeys God. Isaac is born to Abraham and Sarah. God tests Abraham by telling him to offer Isaac as a sacrifice. He obeys, but an angel stops him. Since Abraham obeys God, he is blessed and is told his descendants will be as numerous as the stars of the heavens and sands on the seashore.

Shabbat 10/25-10/26 Parashat Chayei Sarah, Genesis 23:1-25:18 Summary by Helene Cooper Sarah dies at 127 years of age. Abraham purchases a cave and lands at Machpelah for her burial place. Abraham later sends a servant to seek a wife for Isaac. In Nahor the servant meets Rebekkah who consents to marry Isaac. Abraham marries Keturah and has six more sons. Abraham dies at the age of 175. Isaac and Ishmael bury him beside Sarah. Ishmael sires 12 sons and lives 137 years.

Shabbat 11/1-11/2 Parashat Toledot, Genesis 25:19-28:9 Summary by Mark J. Schwitz Isaac, at age 40, marries Rebekkah. When Isaac is 60, Rebekkah conceives twins, who struggle in her womb. Esau, the older brother, is an outdoorsman. Jacob, the younger brother, stays more at home. Esau, returning desperately hungry from the outdoors, trades his birthright to Jacob for some lentil stew. Later, Jacob, disguised as Esau, receives his father’s blessing. Esau, angry at Jacob, leaves home to marry a Hittite woman. Jacob, having both the birthright and his father’s blessing, is sent to find a wife.

Shabbat 11/8-11/9 Parashat Vayetze, Genesis 28:10-32:3 Summary by Nina Grossman Jacob leaves Beer-sheba. On route to Haran, he has his famous dream of a stairway from ground to sky, with angels of God climbing up and down. God gives the land he is lying on to Jacob and his numerous descendants, and promises to protect him. Upon arrival in his Uncle Laban’s territory, he falls in love with Laban’s younger daughter, Rachel. Jacob works for seven years to marry Rachel, but is tricked by Laban into marrying his older daughter Leah first. Then he works another seven years to marry Rachel. Jacob works another six years to earn his own livestock, then is “free” to go back to Canaan with his wives, 11 sons, one daughter, and the livestock.

Shabbat 11/15-11/16 Parashat Vayishlach, Genesis 32:4-36:43 Summary by Ira Klemons Jacob wants to go back home to Canaan, but he fears his brother Esau. Jacob sends Esau gifts in advance of his return. When alone, Jacob wrestles with a divine being who then changes Jacob’s name to “Israel.” When “Israel” arrives in Canaan, God tells him that a nation will grow from him, and will live in the land God gave to Abraham.

Shabbat 11/22-11/23 Parashat Vayyeshev, Genesis 37:1-40:23 Summary by Jason Goldberg Joseph, son of Jacob, is subdued by his jealous brothers and sold into slavery in Egypt. His brother, Judah, tricks his daughter-in-law into letting him father her child. Joseph’s master’s wife tries to seduce him, and has him imprisoned when he refuses. While in prison, Joseph successfully interprets two men’s dreams.

Shabbat 11/29-11/30 Parashat Mikketz, Genesis 41:1-44:17 Summary by Tracy Berman Pharaoh has two dreams about the number seven. Joseph is the only one who can interpret them, saying God was telling Pharaoh there would be seven years of abundance and then seven years of famine. Joseph is put in charge of the court, and his predictions come true. During the famine, Joseph’s brothers come begging for food which Egypt had rationed, but they did not recognize Joseph, who gives them food, but takes his brother Benjamin as a prisoner.

NEWS AND NOTES

SOMEONE YOU KNOW IS WAITING TO JOIN TRT Did you know that most of our members joined because they knew someone who already belonged? Your invitation to a neighbor or friend to join you at a service is the best advertising we have. We are also happy to send our Newsletter to any interested family, but we can't do it until you tell us who they are. Call the temple office, at 732-308-0055, and give us the names; we will take it from there. And if they join, you get a month’s dues free! Think about what your belonging to Rodeph Torah means to you, and help us reach out to others. (Besides, you can always use another driver for the carpool...)

CALLING ALL WALKERS!! Looking to get some exercise and enjoy the beautiful outdoors? TRT now has a “Weekday Walkers” group at TRT. We meet at TRT and walk the Henry Hudson Trail. All levels of walkers are welcome. No fee, just wear a comfortable pair of sneakers and bring a bottle of water. Please call/text Gabrielle Eichel, at 732-513-8312 or e-mail her at [email protected] to let her know you are interested in joining.

ISRAEL SCHOLARSHIP FUND TRT offers scholarships to any student presently in the confirmation program or who has been confirmed, up through and including the summer after 12th grade. Money in the Israel Scholarship Fund will be equally divided among all students traveling to Israel this summer on an approved youth Israel trip, not to

REFORM JUDAISM 101 IN THE 21ST CENTURY Got questions about Judaism? Got friends with questions? Do you want ideas on how to live your Jewish life in your everyday reality? Or maybe you are looking for a special recipe? The has introduced www.reformjudaism.org as a one-stop resource for everything Jewish, including holidays, recipes, social justice, Jewish life and learning, blogs, Israel and much more.

TEN MINUTES OF TORAH Thousands of Jews around the world are now spending 10 minutes a day reading an e-mail about a Jewish text. Are you part of the Ten Minutes of Torah chevra yet? Ten Minutes of Torah, introduced at the 2001 URJ Biennial and delivered directly to your e-mail inbox each weekday, offers a personal connection to a Jewish text, issue or topic, including insight on the week’s Torah portion, Israel, social justice, and Jewish ethics. To sign up, visit www.urj.org/torah/ten.

THE JEWISH PARENT PAGE Did you know that the URJ (Union for Reform Judaism) has many informative and interesting items on their website at urj.org? One of these, The Jewish Parent Page, informs and educates about the Jewish holidays and their customs. It includes blessings, historical background, recipes, family activities and other creative ways to celebrate the Jewish festivals. Go to www.urj.org/learningforparents/parents/.

RJ.ORG: NEWS AND VIEWS OF REFORM JEWS Check out the new Reform Movement blog at www.RJ.org, which is a place to read facts, opposing opinions, calls to action and interesting tidbits from the greater Jewish world. New entries posted daily.

ARE YOU GOING ON VACATION OUTSIDE OF THE U.S.A.? WANT TO SEE A REFORM CONGREGATION IN ANOTHER COUNTRY? How do you find your larger Progressive/Reform/Liberal family when travelling outside of North America? The process is different than what you find in North America, where synagogues and Jewish institutions in North America generally have an "open-door" policy and regularly welcome visitors. The best way is to have the World Union for Progressive Judaism (WUPJ) make the connection for you. Several weeks in advance of your vacation, go to wupj.org to search for WUPJ congregations and then email or call Rabbi Gary Bretton-Granatoor ([email protected] or 212.452.6531). Provide your travel dates, planned accommodations, when you would like to visit the congregation, the number of people in your party, and a way to contact you once you are there. If given sufficient time, we can arrange a personal visit. THE JEWISH CONNECTION 411 The Jewish Connection 411 electronic newsletter includes a comprehensive list of events and happenings within the local Central NJ Jewish community (Middlesex and Western Monmouth Counties). You can view the newsletter with daily updates and videos at www.thejewishconnection411.com. There is a Central NJ Bulletin Board where you can post your free personal buy/sell needs for the benefit of the local Jewish community, a classified section for jobs, homes, autos, merchandise and much more.
