25 years defending Human Rights through music

Vitoria-Gasteiz 1995-2020

Músicos sin Fronteras started in La Habana as a ‘solidarity crush’ in 1995. It was like a declaration of love. As we visited a music school in El Vedado, we were told how children would steal telephone cables to use them as makeshift strings on their violins. This story became the immediate catalyst to call some musician friends as soon as I returned home to Vitoria-Gasteiz, in order to establish an association to help severely underprivileged children and resource-starved schools through music, fine tuning these children’s lives. Begoña, Zuriñe, Juan Jesús, Javier, Juanma, Arrate, etc. were the first to grease the gaskets of this NGO. We started our work in La Habana repairing Manuel Saumell School. The project began to take shape and grow when met the school’s social reinsertion group, to whom we introduced the music of Gonzalo Bermúdez, ‘Ismaelillo’. Under the campaign ‘To Paint a School’ we sent large amounts of paint to contribute with the construction of several social houses and to restore the Hospital of Camagüey. We also collaborated with the band Conciertos de La Habana by sending uniforms for all its musicians and by organizing a series of charity concerts with the band’s director, Esteban Quesada, and the group Sones Jesús María Alegría Solidarios, in my own home. Urtiaga (Pinttu) And this is how this ‘charitable poison’ started to inoculate, and now it spreads solidarity anywhere it goes: by supporting projects President and founder of rehabilitating prostitute girls with AIDS in Thailand, or by providing significant food, toys and stationary donations to a variety of Músicos Sin Fronteras charitable banks in different countries such as Argentina, Bolivia and Venezuela. We support José Antonio Abreu’s El Sistema worldwide as well as a variety of homeless charities, we have helped earthquake victims in Ardabil (Iran), financed student grants for Georgia (Europe), have raised funds to help José Obrero School in Badajoz, , after heavy flooding caused the death of a young girl, and the list goes on.

It was during a trip to that we visited the town of Llíria and became acquainted to Mikel Aizpurua, who eventually became president of Músicos sin Fronteras in the Valencian region, where he actively concocts musical concerts and charitable events. Creating the Músicos sin Fronteras Symphonic Band, by bringing together great musical personalities such as Miguel Micó and members of 54 different musical bands is not doubt one of Aizpurua’s greatest accomplishments. The collection of funds for all musical charity events organized is distributed amongst punctual projects such as rebuilding the Lorca’s Music Conservatory after its 2011 earthquake, and existing social funds, such as Casa Caridad and Fundación Vicente Ferrer. In 2000 we launched our campaign ‘Human Rights, your Best Instrument’ together with Monsignor Pablo Colino, choir conductor and emeritus Chapel Master of St. Peter's Basilica, the RAI National Symphony Orchestra, the choir Chorale Nova Armonia from Rome, and backed up by the enthusiasm of Pope John Paul II. We continue to put all our efforts on this campaign to date, involving international artists highly committed to social causes. And this is how Músicos sin Fronteras leaves its charitable trace around the globe. We have created a cooperative in Guatemala consisting of 6,000 women and 1,500 men, where the culture of solidarity and improving its member’s livelihood are the cooperative’s primary objectives. We are fully engaged in the expansion of Equality Schools internationally, as well as disseminating Human Rights and children’s rights specifically in places where these are lacking. As Chavela Vargas proclaimed: ‘the world doesn’t need any bullets, but more violins and more guitars ‘. Using this quote as our mantra and inspiration, we have sent a tonne of instruments to children in Rojaba (Syria), and are finalizing a similar shipment to women who have survived being kidnapped by Isis-Daesh. We believe music is the only valid therapy to recover human harmony and to silence the din of war in exchange for humanist sounds. From here I would like to congratulate all the collaborators, volunteers and friends who have made this slightly ‘insane’ international humanist project possible. Our objectives remain the same: To ensure that today’s children use culture as the most powerful weapon for all civilization, and to sow solidarity to reap social wellbeing by choosing music as the true language of the soul.

• Music is the most universal teaching resource. It is a learning tool and a quintessential vehicle for transmitting knowledge.

• Several international organizations and programmes such as UNICEF and UNESCO emphasize that, in order for it to be efficient and comprehensive, the education system must include music, as it has proven to be insufficient otherwise. Fuelled by a global interest to promote this integral approach, the International Music Council (IMC), an independent international NGO formally associated with UNESCO, organized in October 2007 the 2nd World Music Forum.

• In line with the United Nations’ framework, there are other charities of less magnitude, but nonetheless equally important, such as The Foundation Non-Profit Music or Músicos sin Fronteras in the Basque Country, working relentlessly to move forward in the same direction.

• Music plays a fundamental role as a mechanism for social integration. Nowadays there are many organizations making use of music as a strategy for violence prevention, especially in environments where children without means are at risk of becoming members of violent groups or gangs as a way to have a dignified life, to make a living.

• Practicing music as a group reinforces the child’s self-esteem whilst instilling values of participation, respect and solidarity. These, in turn, promote the child’s motivation to take an alternative path to violence.

25 years building bridges

International Projects of Relevance

During these initial 25 years, Músicos sin Fronteras has promoted, organized and supported numerous charitable projects of the most diverse nature. However, they all share a united purpose: to defend the Human Rights of those at risk of social exclusion, of the most vulnerable.

As we have started so many actions and have carried out such a variety of projects in the Spanish Territory as well as internationally, we are briefly compiling here endeavors of great repercussion. This doesn’t rest any importance to the rest, as all actions, no matter how small, have contributed to achieve our goals, and are therefore equally invaluable.

We continue our work, trusting that our little grain of sand will achieve great changes, which will push society to build a happier world, equal for all.

Músicos Sin Fronteras will continue their work relentlessly until the world is filled with music International Projects of Relevance Cooperativa “El Recuerdo” en Jutiapa (Guatemala)

• The Integral Cooperative of Savings and Credit ‘El Recuerdo’ R.L. promotes its members’ social and economic improvement as well as the integral improvement of the Guatemalan’ South-East region through environmental, educational and social activities which demand the collective effort, joint action, participation, civic responsibility and the solidarity of all its members. Part of the craftwork carried out by the cooperative’s members is often exhibited locally.

• It works to provide services in a sustainable and equitable manner, which are integral for economical and sociocultural progress. This is possible through a network of subsidiary offices which liaise with local municipalities and social organizations in the South-East region of Guatemala.

• This vast project alphabetizes the 6,000 women and 1,500 men it comprises, providing basic knowledge and studies and unearthing their own forgotten Xinca and Mayan cultures. It provides support to young pregnant women who are victims of domestic violence, by empowering them though education and social work. It assists them in finding employment locally as administrative assistants or in nursing roles in councils and the cooperative’s own Nursing and Victims of Violence School.

• Presently there are several campaigns of diverse nature being carried out simultaneously: recovering forgotten indigenous languages such as the Poqomam, empowering women through employment, rejecting violence against women in all its forms, bullying prevention in schools, and more. International Projects of Relevance Cuba

• Cuba is the country where Músicos sin Fronteras ’ seed germinated, and to date, a variety of diverse projects continue to develop there. It all started in 1995 when Músicos sin Fronteras helped to rebuild Manuel Saumell’s School, furthermore endowing it with several instruments (4 pianos, guitars, violins, cellos, 3,000 guitar strings, clarinet and saxophone reeds, jazz flutes and musical accessories). The motivation behind this initiative was to ensure children’s access to school and its canteen, as owning an instrument was the school’s pre requisite for its access by all students. Since then, we have successfully carried out other projects in this country:

• Under the slogan ‘To Paint a School’ we recorded and released a record with Soneros del Changuï, which included a song sharing the same name. We brought the group to Spain, where they toured, giving a series of charitable concerts. All funds raised were integrally spent on paint for schools in La Habana.

• Agreement with Alicia Perea, president of ICM (Instituto Cubano de la Música) to engage in the support and solidarity with music in Cuba.

• Collaboration with ‘Ismaelillo’ a project of social reinsertion through music in Cienfuegos.

• “Release of album Con Sabor a Mojito” in aid of Manuel Saumell School.

• Tribute Act honoring Musicians Without Border’s work in the province of ‘Las Tunas’ in Cuba, honoring us with the Silver Medal.

International Projects of Relevance Cape Verde

Músicos sin Fronteras involvement in different projects aim to support the economic independence and social reinsertion of marginalized groups whilst raising Human Rights awareness.

• Collaboration with Turuta School of Cape Verde by donating 2 containers with toys, food, school material and musical accessories through several campaigns.

• Development of women’s employment reinsertion in the island of Boa Vista, through the donation of 13 looms and its corresponding fabrics in order for these women to develop specific technical knowledge as well as the interpersonal skills necessary to carry out this activity professionally.

• Meetings with the University of Cape Verde’s Governing board with a view to create the island’s first Human Rights Watch.

International Projects of Relevance Middle East

Mirzo Music Center, Irak

• Músicos sin Fronteras has built the Mirzo Music Center in Irak in order to provide support and shelter to women who have been kidnapped, raped and tortured by Daesh, these women’s children and also refugees.

• A second tonne of instruments and musical accessories are currently being consolidated and revised for Kurdish women and refugee camps in Irak, and it will be shipped shortly. The temporary concession of warehousing space by the Vitoria-Gasteiz Council is enabling Músicos sin Fronteras to classify, reorganize and prepare these shipments efficiently.

Music School in Rojava, Syrian Kurdistan

• War children in the region of Rojava are already enjoying the tonne of instruments sent out to them. These are being used as therapy to confront their fears and anxieties as the warfare continues. Project Dar Tika. Tánger • The Dar Tika (House of Trust) project started on the 1st of December of 2011 in Tangier and is managed and owned by the Sisters of Jesús-María, a private and religious, not for profit organisation. This centre is under the authority of the Catholic Mission and it owns its own organisational and human resources enabling them to operate independently.

• This project provides shelter and psycho-social and educational support to homeless, unaccompanied girls suffering from neglect, exploitation and/or abandonment. The centre is open 365 days a year and 24 hours a day.

• Besides Músicos sin Fronteras, this project is supported by several other collaborating entities such as Children of the World, Europa Mediterránea Juventud and Música y Cultura. Moreover, this project is backed by the wilaya or province Tangier sits in, the Entraide National and the UPE (Unités de Protection de l'Enfance). The Health, Education and Youth committees’ support was critical for the project’s opening, as it ensured its adhesion to law 14/2005, applicable to all youth welfare centers.

Girl’s Profile:

• Victims of violence or at high risk of suffering any kind of violence • Victims of permanent neglect and abandonment • Victims or temporary abandonment (due to illness, imprisonment of carer(s) or any other reason) • Victims of economic exploitation (petit bonne) • Domestic workers outside their own family home. These work primarily for families living in the city.

Proyecto Dar Tika. Psycho-social and socio-educative support to each girl in aid . Tánger

Objetives:

• To make the youth suffering from social exclusion and residing at the Dar Tika shelter home acquainted to instrumental music, providing them with their own musical instruments. These come from donations previously collected by Músicos sin Fronteras .

• To offer immediate protection to girls at high risk of exclusion and/or victims of any kind of abuse and/or abandonment in the region of Tangier.

• To immediately send to school all underage girls staying at the Dar Tika center for a period longer that 1 month.

• To accompany these girls in their process of reinsertion, be it socially or within their own families. To make them visible through the regularization of their civil statuses (proof of identity documents) and through the search of future plans and projects for them.

• To provide care for each child’s medical health.

• To provide psycho-social and socio-educative support to each girl in aid of their integral development (social skills, hygiene habits, education in moral values, social coexistence, etc....) Project TXIMURKA. Schools for equality and coexistence through culture

• Their fundamental objective is ‘to educate the heart’ through the promotion of solid networks and social intelligence, and through the globalization of affection, harmony, solidarity and a love for the environment. These schools look to instill values to combat hate, racism and fear, all of which are basic universal feelings currently not being addressed in educational establishments.

• We focus on ‘pending subjects’ such as learning to be happy through education, especially at a young age.

• There is no such thing as a bad student, but a bad teacher. This concept has meant resetting many instructors’ mindsets, as oftentimes the pupil’s individual needs and concerns are overlooked, by simply classifying them as ‘maladjusted’ or ‘misfits’.

• Our school project’s prime concern and objective is to connect with children and youth from different cultural roots through art, creativity and new technologies, using culture as a tool for social development.

• Our interest lies in intercultural connection through the education and social reinsertion of the most vulnerable groups. We believe in the power of creativity as a source of progress and understanding, as all creative processes arise from the contact of different cultures and individual profiles.

• We provide help in local neighborhoods in Vitoria-Gasteiz and Araba, focusing primarily on immigrant and refugee causes. Until now we have supported initiatives such as Kalimba, Irse, Cáritas, Ongi-Etorri, etc....

Génesis Músicos Sin Fronteras – Talka Galería – Ernesto Knorr

Genesis is a project driven by Músicos sin Fronteras , which focuses on helping women who have been abducted, raped and kept as slaves by the Islamic State (ISIS) from 2014 until 2017. It works in partnership Talka Galería and the sculptor Ernesto Knorr.

In 2019, Musicians Without Border s built the school Mirzo Music Centre in the city of Khana Sor, Iraq, to enable war women and children return to their birthplace and everyday lives through music. The help provided through this project was represented with the creation of an iron sculpture of 16x28x7cm in dimension by Ernesto Knorr, aptly named Génesis. The funds raised by the sale of 500 replicas (480€ + VAT) will be fully invested in the formation and recovery of traditional Iraqi instruments, which are being used as tools to reinsert these women and children back in their own communities.

Through this project we are fully committed to face the devastating consequences of senseless human actions with a spirit of solidarity and commitment.
