VALANT: Good morning. Welcome to the Brookings Institution. My name is Jon Valant. I’m a fellow here at Brookings in the Brown Center on Education Policy and we’re very happy to have you all with us for the next 90 minutes. That includes both the folks in the room and also those joining through our webcast. And whether you’re in here or out there, you are welcome to follow along the conversation on Twitter with #SchoolChoice. And then we’ll also post a recording of this session after the session’s over on the Brookings site. The topic of today’s conversation is public school choice in U.S. cities. You could make an argument that no modern education reform, with the possible exception of test-based accountability, has fundamentally shaped what his happening in urban schools to the extent that public school choice programs have. -

Unswayed President
NEBRASKA WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY MAGAZINE PROVE IT SPRING VOLUME , ISSUE PLUS: NWU chooses its th Unswayed president. 17 Good science can move mountains— if it can move public opinion. FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Alumni and Friends, When I began this joyous work nearly a dozen years ago, I attended a week- long seminar with 45 other new college presidents. It was designed to familiar- ize us with the multiple responsibilities that were coming with our new roles. I clearly recall one presenter’s comment: “You’ve embarked on a sprint and a marathon.” Hearing that, it sounded more than a little exhausting. This work has certainly been busy. And like any good runner, I’ve needed to make every second count. There have been lots of uplifting moments—much like a runner’s high, you could say. Now, being some 90 days from my finish line in this role, I bid you a fond farewell. Rosemary and I have enjoyed getting to know many of you. We’ve treasured hearing from and about many more. We’ve marveled at your dedication and generosity. All of you know that Nebraska Wesleyan is a special, high-achieving university. The honor that goes with having worked here we will carry with us always. I’m certain NWU’s quality, reputation and success—so highly regarded for generations—will continue under new leadership. As I shared with the fac- ulty, sta and students in early February, Darrin Good is a brilliant choice for Nebraska Wesleyan’s 17th president. Rosemary and I were immediately and deeply impressed by Darrin and his wife, Diana, when we met them. -

We are pleased to be in Lincoln for our 15th annual media day as we prepare to kick-off another year of football in the GPAC. I want to thank Julie Page from the Cornhusker Marriott, Brian Keller from Nebraska Wesleyan, and GPAC Assistiant Commissioner Lucas Mohrman for their assistance in preparing for this annual event. Excitement for media day continues to grow each year in the league from our inaugural event back in 2000 at Mahoney State Park. A special thank you to our GPAC Football Officials Coordinators Justin Ingalls and Pete Hansen for their atten- dance today as well. It’s positive for the GPAC to have the Officials Coordinators and coaches in the same room at the same time for discussion on rules and interpretations prior to the season. Also, once again this year, we will be conducting a media poll along with the coaches’ poll for the preseason. -

In the opinion of Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP, Bond Counsel to the District, based upon an analysis of existing laws, regulations, rulings, and court decisions, and assuming, among other matters, the accuracy of certain representations and compliance with certain covenants, interest on the Bonds is excluded from gross income for federal income tax purposes under Section 103 of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 and is exempt from State of California personal income taxes. In the further opinion of Bond Counsel, interest on the Bonds is not a specific preference item for purposes of the federal individual or corporate alternative minimum taxes, although Bond Counsel observes that such interest is included in adjusted current earnings when calculating corporate alternative minimum taxable income. Bond Counsel expresses no opinion regarding any other tax consequences related to the ownership or disposition of, or the amount, accrual or receipt of interest on, the Bonds. Position Statement of Computer Science Education
X.C. CONNECTICUT STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION Hartford TO: State Board of Education FROM: Dr. Dianna R. Wentzell, Commissioner of Education DATE: November 2, 2016 SUBJECT: Position Statement on Computer Science Education Executive Summary Introduction The State Board of Education’s (SBE) focus on equity, high academic achievement, and college and career readiness and its priorities as described in its five-year plan, Ensuring Equity and Excellence for All Connecticut Students –2016-21, supports a call for action in Computer Science Education as evidenced by: 1. The need to have a clear understanding of the principles and practices of computer science in order to be prepared for careers in the 21st century in a computer-intensive world. 2. A lack of access to computer science courses for under-represented minorities and socio-economically challenged groups, as well as a significant gender gap in students enrolling in advanced computer science courses. 3. Computer science being strongly based upon higher tiers of cognitive taxonomy as it involved design, creativity, problem solving, and analysis of solutions to problems. 4. The call in the Every Student Succeeds Act to provide quality computer science instruction as part of a “well-rounded education.” History/Background Over the past few decades, computers have transformed both the world and the workforce in profound ways. The need for such skills across industries continues to grow rapidly, with 51 percent of all science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) jobs projected to be in a computer science-related field by 2018. In addition, according a 2014 study by Gallup and Google, nine in ten parents want computer science taught at their child’s school. -
