. . . Rev. Fr. Stepanos Doudoukjian Think Orange !!??!!

How do you make the color Orange? You need the primary colors of Yellow and Red to make Orange. Yellow = The Church Red = The Family And when you mix them together, you make Orange. Orange is blending two great institutions and creating something new, something different. However, you NEED both the Yellow (The Church) and the Red (The Family) to create the new color — Orange. When you ponder these thoughts as you read this article - think about creating Orange. Join us at St. Peter Armenian Church. Orange is making a splash! We have new ideas and concepts on Sundays. 9:30am - Sunday School & Adult Christian Education 10:00am - We all worship together during the Divine Liturgy 11:30am(ish) - We finish our Liturgy/Worship. Check out the Fall Preview in this issue to see more exciting activities at church. Also, please read the Sunday School Superintendent's Loosaper article. It goes into great detail about this year's changes. Think Orange - Become Orange - Enjoy Orange God bless you always, Fr. Stepanos

As we reflected on the one-year anniversary of Fr. Garen's passing on June 27, 2013, I asked one of our St. Peter summer interns, Peter Topalian, to prepare a message about Fr. Garen. I gave Peter some of Fr. Garen's books to read and asked him to choose a quote and write a brief reflection. The following was prepared by Peter in honor of our dear Fr. Garen. Dear St. Peter Armenian Church Family and Friends, It has been a year since Father Garen's passing, and we will continue to remember his teachings and impact on our community. Father Garen was a very humble priest. He would always go out of his way to help others. His sermons were always from the heart, taken from everyday life, and were very straight forward. In Father Garen's second book (written in 1995), I Want The Best: Said The Lord , he explained "During the Divine Liturgy, immediately before the chant of 'Holy, Holy,' the priest reads a private prayer in which the following words appear: 'And Our Lord Jesus Christ transformed the earth into heavens.' We Christians are a blessed people unto God. We believe that our Lord Jesus Christ, among the multitudes of His miracles, performed also the miracle of transforming our universe into heavens, thus filling us with His abundant blessings and graces." Father Garen believed that we were given blessings and graces by Jesus Christ to teach others. Let us keep him alive in our hearts and souls by teaching others the blessings of God.

Parish Council Message

As we quickly move into fall, I want to take a moment to reflect back on the summer at St. Peter Armenian Church. It began as it usually does with our Armenian Festival. The 2013 event marked a big leap forward with live music, reorganized facilities, and a revamped menu. This year’s Festival built upon that momentum and seemed to attract an even larger crowd from outside our community (the beautiful weather didn’t hurt either!). Special thanks to Chuck Tutunjian and Bill Nevins for again co-chairing the event, as well as to all of the volunteers who dedicated their time and talents for this annual celebration of Armenian culture and heritage. This summer also marked a period of great progress with our building renovation projects. If you recall, last year we embarked on an extensive project to repaint the sanctuary of the church. At this year’s Parish Assembly, we identified as the next two areas for improvement: 1. Repair the persistent leaks in the church’s four flat roofs; and 2. Address the electrical issues that had greatly reduced the available lighting in the parking lot. We received permission from the parish, with a vote of approval at the Assembly in March, to spend $45,000 from the Building Fund on these two projects. The Council received four bids from commercial roofing contractors, and after comparing prices, references, and even getting input from an architect, we bid out the work to Tri-City Roofers. By all accounts, Tri-City displayed a high level of professionalism and skill, and I’m happy to report that there have been no roof-related leaks since the project’s completion. The task of addressing the lighting in the parking lot was more complex because of the variety of problems presented. The electrician found problems ranging from underground shortages to places where mice had eaten through the wires, which made the work more time-intensive. Those issues have now been resolved and all lights are working in the main parking lot and along the driveway, including the light that shines upon the cross on top of the church. I’m pleased to share with you that the total cost for both projects was just under $40,000, approximately $5,000 less than we had budgeted. Special thanks go to Bob Bedian and Frenchie Ekmalian of the Parish Council Building Committee for overseeing the bidding process for both projects, monitoring the work, and ensuring that the work was performed to our satisfaction. The completion of these three projects have provided much needed improvements to the infrastructure of the church, but we don’t want to stop here. Looking ahead, we are assembling a committee to review and propose enhancements to the Gdanian Auditorium, ensuring it continues to serve the parish’s needs for years to come. We are blessed with a wonderful church building, but it requires time, resources, and money to maintain. With God’s help and the parish’s support, we can not only do that but also move things forward so that this building is not only a house of worship, but a home for all who enter it. St. Peter Church youth participate at St. Vartan Camp, August 2014

Fr. Yeprem Kelegian and St. Nersess Seminarians participate in services at St. Peter Armenian Church, September 7. Church Organization News Sunday School NEW ‘TRADITIONAL’ SUNDAY SCHOOL FORMAT

The Sunday School year has begun and what an exciting “Orange” year we have planned! By now, all of you probably have heard about our new format of beginning Sunday School classes at 9:30 a.m. while also offering a simultaneous Adult Christian Education class. Then by 10:00 a.m., everyone is in the Sanctuary participating and worshipping in service together. We will be trying this format for four solid months. During this time, we hope and pray that every family gives this new time and format a chance by arriving on time!

But why are we doing this? If you weren’t at orientation on September 7, then allow me to say that while this may seem new, rather it’s something very traditional that the entire community – all generations – worship together as Christ intended. Additionally, studies show how attending Church as a family increases average life expectancy by eight years; reduces a child’s use and risk from alcohol, tobacco and drugs; improves a child’s attitude at school and increases their school participation; reduces their risk for committing a crime; and so much more. Also by attending Church as a family, it statistically improves the odds that children will lead an active church life in their adult years.

So, St. Peter Family, let’s do this . . . for the sake of our children and the future of the Armenian Church!

We hope that you consider joining us in this new format by either participating in the Adult Christian Education classes, and/or by bringing your child(ren) to Sunday School.

For our Sunday School classes, grades this year will include: · Pre-K / Kindergarten Combo · 1st & 2 nd Grade Combo · 3rd & 4 th Grade Combo · 5th & 6 th Grade Combo · 7th * 8 th Grade Combo · High School

For our Adult Christian Education classes, here are the monthly topics and instructors: · SEPTEMBER: Badarak/Divine Liturgy - Fr. Stepanos Doudoukjian · OCTOBER: Scripture in the Armenian Church - Elsie Vozzy · NOVEMBER: Church Theology/Spirituality - Dn. Yervant Kutchukian · DECEMBER: Armenian Church History – Dr. Ara Kayayan

There is a $20 fee for students to cover the cost of materials, but the Adult Christian Education classes will be free during this four-month trial.

We also have some exciting and fun social activities planned for our Sunday School group throughout the year, including a fall apple-picking outing, hosting a lunch for our community, and the ever-popular bowling! Contact [email protected] or give me a call at 518-505-9893 to find out more. We welcome your participation! Sincerely, Paulette Doudoukjian Sunday School Superintendent

ST. PETER ARMENIAN CHURCH…. We are painting the Church “Orange” this school year

Why Orange?

The Church is yellow…

The Family is red…

Red and yellow are primary colors which, when mixed together, result in Orange, a secondary color. Orange is a vibrant, energetic, healthy color.

Families and the Church are each working hard to build faith in our children. However, we must combine and synchronize our individual efforts. If you paint with only red, you will get what only red can create; if you paint with only yellow, you get what only yellow can create. Painting with both red and yellow simultaneously, you get new possibilities, fresh solutions and vibrant outcomes!

So imagine the possibilities when Church (yellow) and Family (red) combine? Together, we can raise vibrant, energetic, healthy children with a strong faith foundation that will ultimately help them navigate life.

“When you think orange, you see how two combined influences make a greater impact than just two influences,” Reggie Joiner, author of “Think Orange.”

More details on “Think Orange” will follow throughout the year; however, if you have the time, please purchase and read “Think Orange” by Reggie Joiner to learn more about this concept.

Why 9:30 am?

Simple… as mentioned, our goal is to create an ORANGE community of faithful. We must do this TOGETHER.

There are numerous studies showing the long-term benefits of families attending Church together. This is what Christ intended… to break bread – communion – together each and every time the Divine Liturgy is celebrated. This cannot be accomplished by holding Sunday School classes at the same time the Badarak is being celebrated. Also, ongoing Christian Education for all ages is essential throughout every stage of life.

So recognizing all that, we intend to devote 30 solid minutes each Sunday – starting at 9:30 a.m. sharp -- in lessons on our faith, culture, and heritage for all ages . Thus, one step towards creating a beautiful ORANGE community!

WELCOME TO THE YEAR OF ORANGE!

St. Peter Adult Fellowship Although the club does not have regular luncheon meetings over the summer months, we did enjoy several activities. In June, the club helped with the salad preparation for the St. Peter Church Annual Armenian Festival. Special thanks to Sherry Edwards who opened her home and back yard in July to club members and friends for an informal summer picnic and a special surprise birthday celebration for her Uncle Dick Terzian. Although the weather was threatening rain, it did not dampen anyone’s spirit and all enjoyed a delightful afternoon. In August, we embarked on our annual trip to the MacHayden Theatre in Chatham. This year we attended the matinee performance of the musical “GUYS AND DOLLS.” Prior to the theater performance we enjoyed a special buffet luncheon at the Winding Brook Country Club in Valatie. On September 10, the club celebrated its 20-year anniversary at the Century House in Latham. Over 25 members and guests enjoyed a sit-down luncheon featuring a beef, fish or chicken entrée. The club’s first chairman, Yeretsgin Zabelle, expressed her pleasure and satisfaction with the progress made over the years Current Chair, Ara Baligian, provided information on the current status of the organization. Secretary, Martin Kenosian, outlined the club’s activities for the remainder of the year. All in attendance were invited to participate in the upcoming activities and events. Our first meeting in October will feature Der Stepanos and his versatility in preparing a variety of pizzas. He is adapt at twirling the pizza dough and could easily have a successful second career as a Pizza Chef extraordinaire! We also invited Gil Payette to return for another presentation on Native American folk lore. We are looking forward to his return visit. Our November meeting will feature a traditional turkey dinner with all the usual trimmings. The program will feature a special reenactment of a typical executive committee meeting in the process of making momentous decisions about the club’s possible activities. In December, for the last monthly luncheon meeting of 2014, we are making plans to celebrate the holiday season again this year at The Desmond in Albany. All our activities, programs and luncheons are open to the community; however, only members are directly contacted by our Calling Committee. Information regarding all our planned activities is provided in the Loosaper as well as in the church bulletins. Please do not hesitate to attend our functions. We would be very pleased and would welcome your interest and participation in any of our club’s activities. Martin Kenosian, Secretary ACYOA Juniors On June 25 and 26, our ACYOA Juniors gathered at church for a first-in-its-kind "Ministry Days." During these two days, the youth of our parish offered outreach to many in our church family by making phone calls, writing letters and notes, and praying for those sick and in need. We also had discussions about what the church is and how we live out our Christian faith in the world. As the parish priest, I was inspired by their love, faith, devotion and sense of Christian outreach. May you too be inspired by the words of our youth (see following pages) who shared their thoughts and feelings as they answered the question, "Why do I come to church and why should others come to church?" We look forward to seeing you one of these Sundays for our Divine Liturgy at 10:00 a.m. When you come to church, you can expect an encounter with God!

This is why WE come to church. We encourage YOU to toYOU YOU encourage encourage ThisWe comeWE This We to comeWEchurch. to church. is why is why Women’s Guild Goodbye summer! Hello fall! And what a better way to welcome the cooler weather than with BAKING! Although I’m a little ahead of myself, I’ll get back to that in a minute. First, I want to report on one of the most important events we’ve ever celebrated. For those of you who were there, you probably remember and, for those of you who were not able to join us, I will tell you now. On May 17, 2014 parishioners and guests came together to celebrate the 100 th Anniversary of the St. Peter Women’s Guild with a Dinner/Dance at The Desmond Hotel and Conference Center in Albany, New York hosted by our Guild. There was dining, dancing and visiting with one another throughout the evening while enjoying live music by the Greg Nazarian Band. The night was a most memorable one with beautiful music and great food, but most of all the wonderful people with whom we shared the evening. I’m sure all the Women’s Guild members before us were smiling down upon us. Please see the letters following this article sent to and received from ‘Mer Doon’ regarding the proceeds given from this event. Another successful event was the Annual Armenian Festival held on June 7-8. We were blessed to have perfect weather, live music by the John Berberian Band, the best Armenian food and baked desserts anywhere, and, of course, the Capital District community who came out to support us. By the time you receive this edition of the Loosaper, we will be underway with preparations for the Women’s Guild Lahmejune Luncheon being held in the Gdanian Auditorium on Sunday, September 28 immediately following worship services. I will report on this event in my article for the next issue of Loosaper. TO ALL WOMEN’S GUILD MEMBERS! On Sunday, November 9, the Women’s Guild will conduct their Annual General Membership meeting. As in the past several years, the Parish Council will graciously provide us with lunch. A woman sure could get used to this kind of pampering! We all thank you ahead of time for all your thoughtfulness and generosity. Please mark this date on your calendar and plan on attending. We will need a quorum to vote on candidates to replace the outgoing Executive Committee Members as well as delegates for the 2015 Women’s Guild Assembly to be held in Washington, D.C. BE PROUD AND PARTICIPATE!!

* SAVE THE DATE * ANNUAL HOLIDAY FOOD BAZAAR Hosted by the St. Peter Women’s Guild Saturday & Sunday, December 6 & 7, 2014

Now, back to the baking. On December 6-7, the Women’s Guild will sponsor their Annual Holiday Bazaar. Many Women’s Guild members have already answered the call to volunteer and coordinate the baking projects — we THANK YOU!! These coordinators will be asking for volunteers to assist with the various tasks. You don’t have to be a Guild member to help. We look to everyone in the St. Peter Church family to make this event truly successful. Come one, come all! Mark your calendar now and share the news of this annual event with your friends, family, neighbors and co-workers. It’s a great time to stock up on all those Armenian pastries and specialty dishes for the holidays.

2014 Annual Armenian Festival Report

The 2014 annual Armenian Festival hosted by our parish on June 7 th & 8 th was again an amazing success. The main goal of this year’s festival committee was to build on the changes we made in 2013 and improve on the overall process. Most importantly, Mother Nature cooperated for the first time in many years!!! Some of the additions and changes to this year’s event included: Use of electronic sign up for volunteers Improvements to the food service area New layout of the inside food service New game vendors Some things continue to work so well that we can’t change them: Live Armenian music - featuring the John Berberian Ensemble The “Hye Burger” - Armenian Style Burger Expanded Beverage Area - including Armenian Pomegranate Wine Sangria Armenian Style Pork Kebab The Hye Bake Shop - featuring desserts and other treats prepared by the Women’s Guild Other popular items that we continued with this year included: The Paklava Sundae Armenian Dance presentations by the youth Cooking demonstrations Variety of games Assorted Vendors for Armenian gift items and other products Expanded marketing resulted in many first-time festival attendees. This is in keeping with our goal to make the Armenian Festival a truly regional event where we can showcase our church, heritage and, of course, our food! The live Armenian music with the fantastic John Berberian Ensemble continues to add to the atmosphere by entertaining the onlookers and bringing many to their feet to dance.. This festival could not have been a success without all of the volunteers that stepped up to do their part. There are far too many volunteers to thank individually; however special thanks go out to our committee members: Food Preparation – Bill Nevins Bakery Area – Sharon Foley Entertainment – Yn. Paulette Doudoukjian Publicity/Advertising – Gilbert Chorbajian & Rafi Topalian Sponsorship/Raffle – Raffe Moroukian Beverages – John Avakian Barbecue – Bob Bedian & John Ekmalian Volunteers – Holly Dadekian Vendors – Breann Parseghian Facilities – Dan O’Keefe Salad Preparation – Adult Fellowship Congratulations to the following winners of the Apple Raffle prizes: 1st Place: $1,000 Cash option – Rosine Kazanjian 2nd Place: Apple iPad – Liam Nevins 3rd Place: $250 Cash –Mary Panjarjian 4th Place: Basket of Apple Cheer - Betty Roberti Businesses and friends were again given the opportunity to be Festival Sponsors, either by making monetary donations or by donating products and/or services needed for the Festival. The names of all Festival Sponsors were prominently displayed with banners at the Festival and in a Sponsorship Booklet. All their contributions were much appreciated. (See following pages for a complete list.) A very special thank you to our Church Secretary, Lori Payette, for all her hard work in the organization of the Festival. Lori takes care of a great many of the details prior to, during and after the Festival, many of which we are not even aware. We thank Lori for going way beyond the ‘call of duty’ for the benefit of St. Peter Armenian Church. This year’s festival had a net profit of approximately $21,500. Again this year we included some large one-time capital expenses that will be used for future festivals and Church functions. Chuck Tutunjian 2014 Festival Chairman

I would like to thank the Festival Barbecue Team: Commander Yeggie Bedian, Captain Ron Kaiser, Major Will Martin, Corporal Leon Kaiser, and Private Chris Martin for all their hard work and dedication cooking all the kebabs and Hye Burgers during the Festival. I also thank the O’Keefe Family for help with set-up, facilities, and clean up. Gratefully, General Frenchie

What a wonderful experience it was being a part of the Festival of Nations last October! As a kid, I experienced all of the food and fun for many years with my parents. Now as a parent, it is extremely gratifying to be connected with such a fine event. Also touching was knowing my own children had the privilege of performing and showcasing what the Armenian spirit and culture is all about. Please join us again this year to celebrate being Armenians and give our children, friends and family the opportunity to enjoy the wonderful foods and entertainment! Rafi and Marianne Topalian and other dedicated individuals work tirelessly to make this a successful day. So, let's all come together for a fun filled afternoon of Armenian pride and lots of yummy foods from around the world!! This grant enabled her to travel to her native Armenia to lead a team of dedicated people, including a World Health Organization doctor, teachers, and peers. Her program aimed at educating disabled and homeless children and children of war-torn families in English, healthy living, computer literacy, and social skills. With the help of her team, Mariam achieved her objective through the provision of high-intensity, interactive workshops over a period of 21 days. Not only was she successful in the implementation of her project in Kapan, but she also managed to expand her project into the neighboring region. She reached out and collaborated with the Governor of Vayotz Dzor Province in Armenia and donated over 100 textbooks and novels to an NGO in Vayk, the capitol of Vayotz Dzor, which delivered the books to children in hospitals and orphanages. This project would not have been nearly as successful if it were not for the funds raised, under the leadership of Fr. Stepanos Doudoukjian, at the Armenian Festival held in June at St. Peter Armenian Church. Mariam would especially like to thank the children of the St. Peter Sunday School who donated to this wonderful cause and Dr. Ara Kayayan for his generous contribution. It is difficult to learn if your stomach is empty, but with the help of the Davis Foundation and St. Peter Church, Mariam's dedicated team was able to provide healthy organic food to 70 children every day during the project. Their faces would light up every time it was lunchtime. From the moment Mariam and her team passed out soccer uniforms, the children were gleaming and sprinted to grab the soccer balls to start playing. What struck Mariam most was how these children formed such strong bonds in such a limited time frame. Mariam hopes to be able to go back soon and continue the work she started. When it came time to say goodbye, the children started crying, hugging one another and their mentors, and ran over to ask Mariam to extend the length of the project. Unfortunately, Mariam couldn't promise them that she would return the following summer, but she is happy to say that she would be more than willing to go to Armenia again and reach out to new provinces.
